Egypt is a very old country located in North Africa near the Arab region (itself an Arab majority country) and comes in the Middle East region. Earlier under it's native rule of Pharaohs, Egyptians practiced their traditional religion, modernly called Kemetism. Assyrians captured Egypt for one decade in 600 century BCE. Many Jews settled in Egypt as refugees. Achaemenid Persians captured Egypt for many centuries introducing Zoroastrianism. The Macedonians captured Egypt from Persians and Hellenic rule was established under the Ptolemaic dynasty, enforcing Hellenism and Greek on Egyptians. The Romans captured Egypt and continued the same policy, till their conversion to Christianity in 312 CE, by which even Egyptians converted to Christianity. Earlier Christians were a minor religious group, oftenly persecuted. Egypt remained under Greco-Roman Byzantine rule. The Sassanid-Byzantine war which lasted till 628 CE saw a temporary Persian occupation of Egypt but Egypt was soon captured and Islamized by Arabs after 639 CE. Many Arabs settled in Egypt and Egypt was Arabized. Egypt remained under Caliphate rule, Ayyubid dynasty, etc for many years and Egypt also saw a phase of Crusades. Ottomans captured Egypt from Mamluk dynasty and ruled it from 1527 to almost 1800s as an autonomous province. French under Napoleon interrupted Ottoman rule by occupying Egypt from 1798 to 1801 CE. Even British ruled Egypt significantly. Egypt also remained under Turkish Muhammad Ali dynasty rule. Egypt today is officially an Islamic nation with almost 100 million Muslims (90% of population) and a significant Christian minority. The Jews were forced to leave Egypt after the formation of Israel in 1950s.
