I think it's exactly because Aule was ready to destroy them on command of Eru, that Eru took pity and let them live.(even if technically, Eru would have already forseen it before hand). From Eru's speach, it sounded like they gained conscience on their own, without his help.(Perhaps Aule had the greatest part of the creation fire in him of all valar).

@@AveHidanbasically. as a Jew it’s clear they are supposed to be my people. Lost homeland they fight like hell to reclaim, flawed but noble warrior kings, revered patriarchal figure in their culture (both Aule and Durin fit this tbh), unjustly stereotyped as greedy and/or shifty, notable for their skilled craftsmen, and the men all have beards(as is tradition in Judaism). Personally I love this since the dwarves are my favorite of the middle earth races

Aule would never have said that. He wanted to create the dwarves, so he had someone to teach his crafts. Aule always wanted to share everything he crafted, and the knowledge of how he did it, never hoard for himself(item, resources or knowledge). That came from Melkor(and was transmitted to the Elves, mainly Faenor) :/

Real question is... would there be seven Durins during the Second Music of the Ainur or will there only be one Durin singing for seven? PS: Aule and Gimli must have been stoked af when they get to see each other in Valinor while the latter still has flesh and blood. A Dwarf so noble and possibly Aule's finest work, moreso than even Durin himself.

I often wonder about Tolkien's own faith. He was Roman Catholic, but the extension of Middle Earth's history really reveals a broadly imaginative side to Tolkien in the realms of spirituality. Not that members of organised religion can't think up such concepts - they definitely can. But it does seem weird how he would devote so much of his life to creating a world with not-to-similar history or religions than the Catholic or wider Christian doctrines if he was a staunch Catholic. He obviously didn't take the Lewis approach of underpinning his books with Christian allegories as if they were the only way any world could make sense. I'm wondering if Tolkien was personally a bit removed from the church given he was so willing to put dissimilar belief systems in his work.
@NerdoftheRings
@NerdoftheRings 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up. I think there’s much more evidence that he was a devout catholic than not. He said himself he didn’t care for allegory, so it’s not surprising that he didn’t strictly adhere to the Christian belief system in his works. He borrowed a lot of concepts from both history and ancient literature. Even so, there’s plenty in there that is noticeably inspired by his faith. Thanks for watching and bringing this up! I love getting to have conversations like this with folks!

@@NerdoftheRings I could definitely see how Tolkien’s own faith inspired even this story, namely I unconsciously drew a lot of parallels between Aule and Abraham of the Old Testament (Impatient about waiting for God’s / Iluvatar’s chosen children, the command to sacrifice his child/children only for God to have mercy on them, etc,) Just something I noticed a bit

I'd strongly recommend finding the lecture/essay "On Fairy-Stories" which talks about Tolkien's idea of a "secondary world" and why he does worldbuilding. It's basically Tolkien's response to your question.
@Dystisis

The majority of the religious concepts Tolkien used/showed in his works, are from Norse paganism. This is especially evident in his dwarves and elves, and the entire thematic of death, reincarnation and immortality. People today have a poor understanding of Norse paganism so they fail to see this. We have to read the sources of Tolkien's inspiration, such as Kalevala, sagas, and various written records of folk beliefs, to understand. Aside from this there is the layer of abstraction that suggests an external, ultimate creator, which can be linked to Abrahamism. But in almost all details, the world itself is infused with Norse and Germanic paganism.
@pepehaydn7039
@pepehaydn7039 3 жыл бұрын
Of couse, because the history of Middle Earth occurs before God chose a People for Himself and became Incarnate: true God and true man. Paganism in itself it not bad or even contradictory with Faith, it simply falls short of the Truth, so Cardinal Newman: “(paran divinities) are tokens of guilt in the worshipper, NOT WHEN THEY COULD KNOW NO BETTER, but when they have turned from the Light, not liking to retain God in their knowledge”. There are in Tolkien a good or natural paganism that points to God, this is the paganism of Faramir and his men. Besides, there is a bad paganism that worships Melkor INSTEAD OF ILUVATAR: the last phase of Numenor’s religion. So yes, Tolkien myth is pagan in a sense compatible with catholic faith.

Being short is a disability, and as a tall person, it's your responsibility to make sure short people don't get even more disabled by having to look up to speak to you. Doing this can damage their neck. Standing up while talking to short people also makes them feel threatened and unsafe so kneeling down not only prevents them from damaging their necks but also makes them feel more safe. Not doing this means you don't respect short people, you're mocking their disability, you're looking down on them and that's ableist, so be the bigger man and kneel. Thank you.

It's really interesting Tolkien tied in Norse mythology so deeply into Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was able to intertwine the last battle of Middle Earth with North European literature and history seamlessly. I can only imagine being a student in one of tolkien's lectures. One of the more fascinating aspects of tolkien's work was cell he created the mythos to support his home, England, as he noticed the Anglo-Saxon people had a gap of stories and mythology. Supposedly, Gimli was a nice afterlife.

Arthur, it's not as though your eldest son's name is from some recognized language spoken by eleven million people! You (or he) can decide how you want to pronounce it. I mean, it's the name of a fictional character after all and uses an accent we don't use in English.
@swagromancer
@swagromancer 2 жыл бұрын
There are annotations concerning pronunciation in the Silmarillion, or, if you want to be more thorough, there is the Quenya dictionary by Ambar Eldaron. You are in luck though, "Fin-way" is a close enough approximation of the proper pronunciation, albeit a bit anglicized. The letter "ë" in this case is not really an actual letter on its own, it's just an "e" with diaeresis, indicating that it is not silent (like in the word "mate", for example), but constitutes a separate syllable.

If the Dwarves worshipped anyone it would be Aule as he created them.

Are you pronouncing that correctly?(Iluvatar) I mean I assume you are as you know more about everything Tolkien than anyone I'm aware of, it's just I've never heard it pronounced like that before, even on some of your other vids.

I pronounce it correctly in my later videos. (This was one of my first.) I picked up some bad pronunciation habits from The Silmarillion audiobook (which is great, but has some pretty big mispronunciations).

I'm not going to say for certain that's not how you pronounce Illuvatar but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. So instead of Il-lu-vat-ar, It sounds a lot nicer(subjectively in my opinion) when you say Il-lu-va-tar.

Personally I always loved the idea that Dwarves were based off of the Jewish people. And as such beleive that imbuing the culture with traits of Judaism would work well. Aüle created a covenant with all 7 fathers and each clan holds various days in reverence, maybe even having Dwarves be kosher or have a form of kosher living and spirtual habits.
