Күн бұрынFor 900 years there has been a small Jewish community on India’s Malabar coast, living at peace with their Hindu, Muslim and Christian neighbors. It’s been a model of interfaith tolerance. But, as Fred de Sam Lazaro reports, the community has dwindled since the state of Israel was established and now one of the last Jewish survivors, who maintains the synagogue, says he plans to leave in a few years - for Israel.

In Bible it's been stated that God's own people will be scattered across the world but return to their Holy Land. Even now there are empty buildings maintained in Israel for the people in exile. the Cochin jews in israel built a synagogue in israel excactly like this one in order to preserve their heritage. i been there once in a school trip, very beautiful synagogue, they bring the Torah scrolls from india to this synagogue, torah scrolls that over 500 years old, but unfortunely few years ago arab muslims broke into their synagogue and stole the scrolls :( i remember it's was on the news.

I live in Kochi (Cochin as it was known previously) and the Synagogue at Fort Kochi is known here amongst all - we visit it whenever we go to Fort Kochi. There is even a street named after Jews in Ernakulam town - 'Jew Street' - my Grandparents lived there and there were a lot of Jewish families living there during those times - most were traders. My dad studied alongside Jewish students in his class. Jewish people are very much part of the history and culture of Kerala even if not many live here now. I have seen documentaries about the Jewish history at Kolkata, West Bengal. There are still many synagogues there. I feel this is what makes India unique in the world - all religions and cultures can co-exist peacefully here and advance together.

India should encourage more Israelis to settle in our country........thats the best way to encourage Jewish religion to practice their faith in secular India. If the Rabbis of Israel & India should be encouraged to adopt a large population of orphans, which will slowly increase the population of Jews with more & more priests coming out in the newer generations in the distant future. India needs more Jews & Parsis for setting up more business houses, industries & companies for employing a large population.

I have the greatest regard for the Jewish people, whom I was priveleged to associate with in Canada. I landed in Canada 47years ago and was offered a job by a Jewish Businessman who looked like my father physically and he was more than a father to me. Lots of love and supporting financially by giving me a job in his store. It is amazing to find Jewish neighborhood in Kerala and other places in India. I wish the jews come back and be a part of India too, Israel being very close to India just one and one half hours of flight from Tel Aviv. Indian and Jews combination means hard work arts education business love smart living and prayers. Please do not abandon India. Grow in India by coming back and let Israel be for frequent pilgrimage for you. Common is our ideas in life. Common is the discipline to get educated and support education, ventures and attain proseperity. India as well is a very ancient land where many seers lived. A combination of Jewish people and Indian with education means promote education, professions of repute, discipline and more. Most of all brilliant minds in both the communities can work together in peace and help the world with prayers. Shalom.
