Most of the covenant would've welcomed Humanity in their ranks, perhaps they would rival the Elites. But humanity is independent, I'm sure if the prophets had not discovered that they're the reclaimers, they'll be in relative peace than comparable to mass genocide of planets and star systems. The evil are the prophets and the amount of death they've mounted in their power, and they're in the situation fitting of them

I think it’s kinda scary that in first strike they take out this giant ass fleet, of like (I think) 500 ships, and the covenant treats this as a minor inconvenience that like, didn’t even delay an attack on earth which the fleet was meant to do

Most likely, that was a misnomer for the CAS-Class Assault Carrier. You have to take into account the time frame in which the novel was written. Back in 2003, Halo was only beginning to expand the intricacies of its universe. It is very possible (and quite likely) that many details from the Bungie-era novels have been overruled in favor of new lore such as Silent Storm and Oblivion, which released in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Saying the war was only in one tiny arm of the Galaxy, saying the covenant only had like 50+ super carriers or something, turning Elites and Brutes into Canon fodder, ignoring the differences between the hordes of slave Grunts/Jackals and those in squads which by in large undermines the Covenants actually tactical/strategic prowess. They made the Covenant very young, and just pretending like the Covenant isn't made up of thousands of species whom were conquered or willingly joined. All of these stupid changes ignore base lore that defines the covenant species that we see and everything about how they operate and act.

The Covenant was a religious hegemony that indoctrinated each member of its client species to adhere to their religion since childbirth. Billions of these members lived as innocent civilians on the Holy City, uninvolved in the war effort. Even those who were thought only that they were adhering the desires of their Gods. Of course, humanity did not deserve to be needlessly genocided, but to view this war in a black and white manner would be an ignorant and limited perspective.
