Australia and New Zealand have always had the sibling banter, but I'm sure every Aussie had to tip their hat in respect, the first time they heard Split Enz. Neil Finn though, he's just next level, a totally unique artist and a gift that just keeps giving. No ego, no bullshit, just one great track after another, pure talent. In Australia during the 80s, Split Enz could have just been thought of as just a fun, quirky pop group. You couldn't but like their music. Then I heard in the 90s that some of their poppiest songs were being rearranged with an orchestra. The project was called ENZSO, Split Enz meets the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Complemented by a choir and various well known guest singers, as well as the Finn brothers. Suddenly, their fun songs took on totally new meanings, showing real depth and emotion. The brothers are true genius song writers, along side Lennon and McCartney. To this day, it is permanently on rotation in my car.

That opening bass line immediately gave me a Neil Finn vibe, very unique artist. I'd never heard this one. It is odd that this song hooks you as much as it does with no chorus. With Neil Finn the tendency is that "swirling darkness" thing this song had going on or a very sing-along quality. One All (a Neil Finn solo album) is well worth your time.

Oh, when Phil Judd left Split Enz, they sent an SOS to Neil to come replace him. So Neil was not a founding member. Neil started writing songs, but the band was mostly doing Tim Finn songs. A band called Jimmy and The Boys recorded a song Neil wrote called They Won't Let My Girlfriend Talk To Me. Based on that success, they started re-evaluating Neil's songs!

Hope you're doing Message to My Girl (aka How to Write a Beautiful Ballad Without Being Sappy 😁) and Better Be Home Soon. You won't find better songwriting. P.S. It may have been 10 years before anyone outside New Zealand noticed Split Enz but they were world famous in Auckland for ages before that. Their stage performances were legendary and drew hordes of students on Friday evenings. By the time Neil Finn left his hairdressing job to join the band many local musicians had been among the band members. I suppose they all went back to the hairdressing to get a regular income. Eddie Rayner transposed many Split Enz songs for orchestra, and they were performed with a Who's Who of NZ singers. Also, it may be 30 years between these two versions, but Neil Finn still looks like a young boy (except the grey hair). It's not fair I cry every time I look in the mirror.

Talking about Madness.... On the 1981 mixed album that came out in Australia, I had a copy 1981 the sound.... Baggy trousers was the next song on the album.... I listen to it so many times I expect that song to follow it all the time....

Speaking of hairdressers and florists with odd names, a small Aussie town l lived in back in the early 80's had a bottleshop called Liquor Downunder. Imagine these days people's heads would explode.

This is probably not gonna resonate with anyone here but if there are any Depeche Mode fans reading this who've seen Anton Corbin's live production of the Songs of Faith and Devotion tour - I can't help but think he may have been inspired by this clip for set design as there are almost too many similarities to be a coincidence.

Gudinski worked really hard for Split Enz break through in Melbourne, may he RIP. The band was always blamed for money trouble for his label when it was up and coming. They speak about it on Countdown with Molly, it became a joke that Split Enz would bankrupt Michael. He really did keep the faith in the guys though when others didn't and it paid off.

Strange thing I found is that every song title from the Split Enz-Crowded House catalogue seemed appropriate for the COVID lockdown. "I hope I never see you again" "Locked out" "Message to my girl" "Six months in a leaky boat" "Chocolate cake"

Loved the bonus track, reminded me of Hooverphonic. Talking of business names. Two lads local to me have a rubbish collection service called Lord of the bins ( One ring and it's gone). The lord of the rings franchise have said they will sue if the name isn't changed.

If your entire song collection was filled with Australian and New Zealand artists of the 70s, 80s and 90s you would be fully musically, emotionally and spiritually satisfied. Growing up in Oz during that period the top 40 was full of those Down Under artistes with a few tracks from overseas invaders.
