Explanation was great. Heard importance but thus is a very practical teaching. Thank you

I am using my Wilson case guage as a go/no-go for my bulk 5.56. My loading (for these) is geared toward SHTF storage - fit any AR/infantry issue standard/factory off the shelf. I FLR (small base die) then gauge to see straight edge slides over the head, then trim with the same gauging standard (I also do a quick rub with my fingernail to see if it catches the neck, assuring it is not below). I rarely use calipers, just occasionally. The purpose is to have a way to assure proper tolerance with every single case, not having to caliper them, which is tedious when loading thousands of cases.

Very good video.. most reloaders either dont use or dont know how valuable this simple act of dropping cases through a case gauge is.. its one of the quality control steps that insures proper and safe function through your gun.. Some inexperienced reloaders will blame the rifle for misfires ,, ( mostly semi autos) instead of the real problem of the ammo being out of SAAMI specs..

Got one of these for every caliber rifle I shoot and reload for. Pistols not so much, mainly because I reload chiefly for revolvers and the case mouth usually splits during the flare process after half a dozen firings or so-not nearly enough to stretch the brass out enough to be trimmed, in my estimation.

I think you should mention that the cases have all been resized as an oversized case placed flat on a table will for sure have the base too high on the gauge. I believe Wilson says the case gauge should be held up off a table to see if the base falls between upper and lower lips. Once the base is properly spaced the gauge is flipped and placed on a flat surface and the distal part of the case should fall between the upper and lower lips of the gauge. This is the point that many mistake because they use their finger to push the base up making it appear that the case is too long.

Great video. My only suggestion would be to also show how to do this with calipers, or at least mention it. Everyone has those but not the tool you were using in the video.

it is extremely important to distinguish between a case gage and a loaded ammo gage. a lot of people mistakenly think a case gage verifies all case dimensions. a case gage verifies length (headspace) only, nothing else.

I thought most people just bumped the shoulder back several thousands. I'm mostly familiar with the Hornady shoulder comparator. I shoot bolt rifles, and use L.E. Wilson hand dies for neck sizing and bullet seating. I do have several rifles in 6.5C, so maybe a body die would be handy if I forget to sort my brass.

One thing you should have mention, is that you may need to trim your brass before dropping it into the gauge and measuring it with the dial indicator. I have seen 223/556 grow way over, and stick out the top of the gauge. Resulting on a bad reading of the head space.

Hi Gavin, can you please tell me the make and model of the dial indicator stand/plate you have in this video. Looks like it would be very handy.

I ran into issues with 308 hand loads where it seems to be shearing off the brass in the chamber. I picked up a cartridge gauge and what I can figure is the guy who loaded for us didn’t size the brass correct thus creating our issue.

So how do you use this if you don't have that dial guage tool?
