In early 2011, Master Relson Gracie made a surprise visit to Balance Studios in Philadelphia.
The purpose of his visit was to test and promote The Migliarese Brothers. Both brothers have been practicing Gracie Jiu-Jitsu since they were twelve years old and have been Relson's students for more than twenty years.

Phil and Ricardo Migliarese began their journey over 30 years ago when jiu-jitsu had not even established itself in North America.
Under the guidance of Relson Gracie and the inspiration of Helio Gracie, the creator of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, the Migliarese brothers became two of first certified black belts in the United States.
Today, almost 20 years after they opened Balance Studios in Philadelphia, they have created a community, a family, of diverse individuals who are dedicated to learning from one another, on the mat and off.
Their techniques will give viewers a unique perspective into the service-oriented experience that the Migliarese brothers have created, and how it touches the lives of people in Philadelphia and at more than 40 global affiliates.

I've learned all of those techniques in JJJ, because that's where it comes from -- same with Judo. JJJ gets a bad rap when it shouldn't. Many of the "high risk" techniques can be practiced at live speed when you have good training partners.

My question is, who is giving Relson degrees on his belt at this point? Rickson? I doubt there are many others who would be anywhere close to his level, I mean he's been studying JJ for 50 years!

It's true... I met Relson in Hawaii in 1992, and flew back several times just to train with him. He told me that I should go to Los Angeles and practice there since Hawaii was an expensive trip. So I began training at Carson St. with Royce and ended up at UFC 1. At UFC 2 walking to a restaurant with the Gracie group in downtown Denver, I mistakenly began talking and making jokes with a short lady with long hair. It turned out to be Rickson's wife! Relson had showed me several tapes of Rickson fighting on the street, the beach, and arenas, and that he had a record of 300/0! Rickson suddenly appeared and got right in my face, eyeball to eyeball. Everything froze. He asked me who I was. I told him my name and that I was a white belt and trained with Relson and now Royce, and that I loved Gracie Jiu Jitsu. He then became the nicest guy and spent the next hour with his arm around me telling me the whole story of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. He also invited me to begin training with him - I thought I was in heaven! A purple belt there named Steve Maxwell asked me what Rickson said to me for an hour. When I told him Rickson invited me to train with him, he said that wasn't really a good idea because I was likely to get hurt. A few months later at Carson St., not Rickson's gym, a big Nordic Greco-Roman wrestler from somewhere in Europe neck cranked me, making it difficult for me to practice Gracie Jiu-Jitsu anymore.

The issue these days, is that there are many Brazilian jiu jitsu schools. However, there are few Gracie bjj schools. So you may not get the self defense aspect of gbjj, and just competition. When most places begin on the ground than standing, you're most likely at a competition school than a self defense school.

First I want show all of you much respect for all your accomplishments as Professors in Jiu Jitsu not enough words!!! and also to Master Relson Gracie ( only my opinion ) ! When the rap came on I had to shut it off and the fast motion I so would of prefer normal time . Thank you destructopuppy you are a tool who definitely gets my point; I think BJJ is great and train it 3x a week. We use it to get back to our feet to enable use of weapons mechanical or physical; not as a primary system. After rolling for 7 years I enjoy the workout and challenge of it and my students mostly participate in submission only events because there is no winner without a submission. Good stuff... My Grandpa said "if you want to master something? Master the basics." Cool stuff. When I started my BJJ journey 6 years ago I remember all those moves. I train at a different school now and when I am tasked to cover a class? I show all the self defense stuff. Most people like it. Parents like it. One guy even used the head lock take down at NAGA. Just roll baby Jiu jitsu is about life then self defense then competition. Peace to you all & God Bless BTT Florida

judoka Masahiko Kimura defeated helio gracie using catch wrestling techniques. although helio never submitted he lost the bout. sakuraba also trained primarily through wrestling then defeated royler gracie which sent shockwaves through mma and nearly the whole gracie clan went on to fight sakuraba. bjj is great to learn but it takes a certain individual to accept a mistake and let the other break your arm if half and you still do not tap. as good as these techniques are I believe a foundation in wrestling should come first and foremost before anything else. the gracies had something more to them then just ju jit su, the true fighting spirit to never give up regardless of your mistakes and if you wanna train in bjj it takes more than just learning techiniques and graduating from belt to belt.

***** lol, I hear that:/ I spent three years in Thailand doing Muay, and fighting every few weeks, that plus Aikido, San Chi Kai, and Tae Kwon Do, ive extracted the best of each in to my own MMA style, thats very effective, i would take Aikido over BJJ any day:/ BJJ has no use on the street at all:/

TheZacdes Almost anything works on the street because the people you're fighting on the street are completely untrained. The only things that don't work are things that actually make you worse at fighting (flashy jump kicks, etc). The real test of a martial art is in UFC, where BJJ has been proven to be almost essential.

It's Kelly McCann (Jim Grover) troll - he is a real world operator with tons of overseas experience. Jim McCann is a different individual - do your research properly. You are probably not a real martial artist. My point is the self-defense portion off gjj is just plain crap. There is just so many better responses to these attacks. That's the point. Relson Gracie teaches that the true GJJ is self defense oriented and not sport BJJ. All of his Black belts must demonstrate the self defense curriculum. Although this looked more like a formality because some moves were not demonstrated.

This video shows why the Art is called Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As you can see from the techniques that Maeda did teach them Jiu-Jitsu and not just Judo. I think over all those years of having challenge matches they found out that the ground techniques were more useful and effective in a real fight. So they started to focus on modifying and perfecting the ground techniques. Hence today GJJ/BJJ is looked at as only a grappling art. Very interesting.

bjj schools still teach self defense, depending on where you go, you may train mostly self defense or you may train mostly for competition. I wouldnt go as far as to say they are two different martial arts. if you took the total amount of people who train bjj i would bet that the overwhelming majority do it for sport not self defense

Looked into the site-very enlightening. Thanks. I don't associate with Moni but had trained with Joel Gerson and Carlos Newton and they were trained by him. Look those guys up if you need to. Even if he (Moni) is a fraud check out his basic self defensive and it is still better that the out dated Gracie system - for evidence of that research what Barra has done with that system - they changed it.

I guess with BJJ it's about what works. Martial Arts is about defending yourself. So many other martial arts have become "cluttered" with so many peripheral things that they have "forgotten" or lets say evolved to the point that they are a lot less effective. So I guess in the big picture a stick of gum doesn't matter that much.

I did this test and many others on the ground long ago before getting my BB in Bjj , to get my first degree Black Belt in Japanes Jiujitsu. This is a very basic test. Not for experts. Anyway good luck.

Its a refresher. Just to make sure that the defense moves are being utilized and trained properly. Sometimes when you get more advanced you stop practicing them for years in favor of the sportive stuff then you can get rusty on them. Relson is making sure they are not getting rusty on the sd stuff
