Those jangling, beautiful, transcendent guitars, solid drums that are tight as a rock, groovy bass, mumbling vocals, ambiguous lyrics.....God, I love early R.E.M. Reckoning is one of the best albums of all time, in my opinion. R.E.M. was so great in the 80s.

Some Allman Bro's influence I believe, the Jangly guitar. I believe that Mike Mills used to be a driver for Capricorn Records in Macon, Georgia, and the Southern guitar bands had an influence on him (and a lot of others) I think.

I was 20 years old and working as a waiter at Lake Chautauqua, NY during the summer of '85, and I had purchased this cassette (along with Husker Du's "New Day Rising") before I got there. Those sounds filled the staff quarters for that entire summer. Smoking grass, drinking Black Horse Ale and shots of Ouzo. Sweet and beautiful memories of Kathy.

I love that thing that's only found at the very end of the original Reckoning LP, right before the needle enters the trail-off grooves. It almost sounds like some kind of reprise for 7 Chinese Brothers, but with a funkier, ska-like beat behind it...this album is pure genius...raw, pure emotion, with just a little production. I remember feeling a little let down when Fables Of The Reconstruction came out the following year, not because it was a bad album, but it lacked some of the qualities the previous LPs held...
@djbrownsville8 жыл бұрын

Early three albums alone launches REM into the very best of American rock. I am not a list guy but it just occurred to m that REM is not just an Athens band ,not only alternatives or post punk something. The lads are one of the best ever and that means REM always be better than Springsteen and the douche bag Eagles.

They became too 'populist' in the non political sense of the word but there's nothing wrong with actual pop music when it's done well. They certainly went mental, and for my money Green was the last album I could stomach from start to finish. I hate how they went on to mix commercialism with seediness at various different stages after that album although I hear Green is not a popular album with many fans. I often find that transitional things can become the scapegoat for later sins amongst certain fandoms, it's weird.
