ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

@@ryanjohnston8237 its actually not, the idea is to realize that you are atman, when you realize it, you will never forget it. Swami explains this by his example of Hamlet. Its similar to the fact that you dont have to remind yourself who you are. However, speaking this about Atman is easy realizing it is tremendously difficult. May God help us.

Swamiji, I learnt a lot from your lectures and benefitted. How do I ever repay the debt? I don't know. I can't even say God bless you because I am older than you. May people like you be there in every place where there is so much of suffering - caused by themselves and others. I am a student of Ramakrisna Mission school - long time ago. I cherish that association.

Advaita Vedanta is 100% correct. All knowledge is indeed thru experience and then attaching a name to it. Just research the development of IBM Watson and you will see that this is how machine Learning works. Machine is fed thousands of example and told what its called. This is machine experiencing each item and attaching a name to it and then later even if it has not seen anything like it before it can still say what it is. This is the core of machine learning and same for how any person or animal learns.

When you experience, you're experiencing experience. When you remember, you're experiencing memories. But the bottom line - there's always an experiencing going on. There can be an experience of absence but there cannot be an absence of experience. The TV screen is always On, the shows start & end.
@aeonsleo2

It's perceptional experience vs memory. The absence of experience is deep sleep.

@@aeonsleo2 yes however whether perceived or in memory the Atma/we are free and untainted of all experiences. Also deep sleep is only one of the three false "states" so cannot be really used as a standard to realise our true nature in turiya

All the forms and fellings are of the same substance as consciousness. Still your thoughts and see that the mind is empty like a mirror. When you look at the spacious mind with no thoughts you are pure awereness. Then a thought wil rise "this is it, i know it". This thought has nothing to do with reality. The thought refers to an inmagined person existing only thanks to thought. But realise then that at the same moment that thought is present there is the Knowing of this thought. This knowing is the empty mirror where all appearences are reflected. The difference with the mirror in which the human body is seen is that in this mirror not only appearences are reflected but at the same time also cognised. According to mahamudra and dzogchen the nature of the mind with all its appearences is always empty and knowing. You are the vast clear and luminous space "mirror" where all this appears. The appearences are always and only just this mirror. You experience the thoughts that rise, you experience the feelings, memories, visions, sounds, tastes, somatic sensation that rise. It is thanks to you that this objects are being experienced. With no awereness there would be nothing.

Thank you swami ji for the simple yet so profound insight ........as you explained ......I never have to remember and remind myself .......because I am continuously experiencing myself .....that is अनुभव. So there is no need of स्मृति for that......similarly I need not remember and remind myself continuously that I am consciousness itself.....rather I have to always experience myself as consciousness .......simple but profound .......how easy and at the same time how difficult....!!! प्रणाम स्वामीजी ।।

So, don't remember, experience. The problem is, we don't recognize what we experience. Maybe, instead of remembering, we should be re-minding. Constantly reminding ourselves that what we are experiencing is not the world, but Brahman appearing as the world. Not duality, but non-duality appearing as duality.
