Hello Voya, I have been following your videos on reMarkable 2 for months. The attention to detail with which you present the individual products and functions is exceptional. Thank you for your work. As for the reMarkable 2, that's actually the device I'm looking for. It should fulfill exactly one task, namely to free my desk from all the notes. It should also look good and feel good when writing. And, importantly, it had to do without Google and tracking. As a software developer, I was shocked to hear today what it can't do. There were so many things in your list that I took for granted, and the update to version 3.9 with the new "features" is not to be taken seriously as such. I have just checked: A fully equipped reMarkable 2 costs €677. For that price, it must be able to do much more.

Thank you very much, and I agree wholeheartedly about the lack of basic functionalities, especially for the price. But here's the kicker, Remarkable's marketing strategy is so effective, that a lot of people are still convinced (even when presented with facts to the opposite) that the Remarkable is the cheapest note taking tablet out there. It's actually fascinating to me when I see that type of behavior.

No study, just my own personal experience from an average of 15-20 emails per day that I receive for the past 3 years, and what I personally have encountered from real world users. Their questions, misconceptions, and what I personally have observed on forums, Facebook threads etc. So you know, the "irrelevant" real-world stuff and hands-on experience in communication with hundreds of people over the years.

I have owned rM2 for a long time, around the end of 2020, and as a Chinese, I mentioned many times that I wished they could support Chinese language, and also i would love to use their new type folio to type in Chinese. But after all these years, I still haven't had the chance to use native Chinese. When I was using kindle scribe to export a pdf that could recognize my handwritten notes in Chinese, I was totally shocked, and I thought it was something rM should have done a long time ago.

Voya , What an excellent review , you are so right in all you are saying and I hope the Remarkable Team listen to this video and take on board a lot of your suggestions, I also see a need for a smaller 7.8 inch version which would be great as and EDC device to take quick notes on the go. I also have Boox devices and the Supernote but still find the Filing system on the remarkable and the Mobile App on the IPhone far superior to the others, which constantly draws me back to the Remarkable time after time.

I absolutely do not care about what they will implement or present in the futures, because I‘m just super happy with my RM2 :-) maybe I‘ll take a look to other devices within next 12 or 24 months just to get an updated hardware (and then maybe from a different vendor). Your points are absolutely interesting especially for those who want to buy a device NOW and to get an overview what are the benefits of this or that device - well done from your side!

I call BS on the tagging not being suitable for serious work. I’m a chemical engineer in a research role. Tagging has been one of the most useful Remarkable updates. The possible improvements you list are good but tagging is very very very far from useless.
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 6 ай бұрын
I agree that it is a useful tool for certain use, but if you actually pay attention to what I said, I refered to the case when you have a huge number of tags, that then it becomes useless because of the issues mentioned. So I specified that very clearly.

Thank you for your great recap and all your other valuable videos! I'm a sketching man and what I really love on my rM2 is the nice design and the "like on a paper" feeling while drawing and handwritting. Also that the device is really focused to this thing, no Internet browsing, no distractions. What I really miss is the more drawing features such is: a possibility to set layer or selection transparency, a possibility to non-proportional resize of a selection, a better quality of an exported drawing (as you pointed out), more gray color variants, more line widths (I miss thicker ones) etc. The Type Folio is unusable for me without Czech localization and as you said, it's really expensive.

I really wish they would add the following features: 1. A way to quickly jump to favourites with a back button to return to the notebook you were on. For example, if you have a to-do list as a favourite and you’re working on a notebook and suddenly think of something to add to your to-do list, you can quickly add it without having to close your current notebook and navigate back and forth. 2. A way to hyperlink between notebooks. So if you have a notebook that you want to reference in another notebook, you can link to open the other one e directly without navigating to it manually. 3. Instant handwriting to text conversion as I’ve seen demonstrated on Supernote.
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 5 ай бұрын
You can do the point 1 by simply doing a two fingered swipe down from the top edge of the screen. This will show you a quick access to the last documents and notebooks you used, making it super easy to jump between them.

Still using a RM1, and it has held up really well for my uses... note taking and reading ebooks/pdfs. I won't replace it with a device from Remarkable as things stand right now. If they want to make money, come up with a "buy a feature" model. If I need cloud sync to dropbox, i'd pay $3 to add it. If I want 10 new fonts, I'd pay $5 for that. $2 per new pen sounds reasonable. What i won't pay for is a subscription for a device that I already paid a lot of money for... maybe if the device was $99 and the subscription gave you free repairs, device upgrades, or something useful???

I agree with most everything you say here Voja, except no plastic in RM3 please. I love love love the physical form of the RM2. It never ceases to please, even after a few years of daily use What I’d ask for in the RM3 is more thoughtful placement of the charging port and the power button. They could also make the charging port sturdier - i have to finagle the arrangement to get a connection and that’s annoying.

I know some people are going to hate me for this, but the keyboard makes this device so much more useful to me. I love the handwriting part for sure and I use it all the time, but being able to quickly type notes in with the type folio has been a real game changer. That said, yes, the type folio is far too expensive. And yes, there needs to be more functionality for it. I mean even the tab key doesn't work as expected. WTH?! That said, i don't regret buying it, as I do use it all the time. But I do feel a little insecure about where things are going to go with the company and how things are being handled. It always feels like somewhere down the line something is going to change that wrecks this for me. When that day comes, I'll just lean into my iPad and sell off my reMarkable stuff. It won't be the first time I've just had to say "Oh well" and shift to something else. For now though, I'm going to enjoy it for what it is and take things as they come.
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 7 ай бұрын
There's no hate here for people expressing their use case scenarios, and thank you for sharing :) I totally get it, and I was quite excited about the potential of the type folio, but I find it way too limiting, for example, not being able to utilize the whole page real estate for typed content, and the fact that when you export typed text you have no way of formating it. So even if I wanted to use it for writing stories (which is what I hoped to be able to use it for) it would mean that I would be forced to do complete document reformatting, once it was exported into a PDF file and once the content needs to leave the Remarkable eco system and be handled in other environments. It's woefully incomplete.

@@MyDeepGuide Perhaps it's because a lot of my work starts on a typewriter as far as my personal writing anyway, but to me this works kind of the same way. I type into it like I would on my typewriter. Then have to copy the text into my computer to work with it beyond that. So I'm used to there being extra steps in my creative processes. But I find it worth it for the lack of nagging that often comes with word processing programs. When I'm trying to get an idea or part of a story out of my head, I'll worry about the spelling, formatting, etc later. The biggest thing for me is to get the words down on something. For that, the reMarkable is pretty much as good as my typewriter. With the added bonus that I can use it at 3:00 when everyone else is sleeping and not wake them up because I've had a stroke of inspiration! ;) But yeah, there are definitely a lot of improvements that could be made, and hopefully we'll see things in the future like fonts, formatting, maybe even export options other than PDF, and if we're really, really lucky, a functional tab key! And if not, I got what I expected out of it over the last 4 years. I'll just move on to whatever best does the job for me next.

I actually have a copy of that leaked investor slides. Part of what they mentioned in it was Connect in 2027 costing more, but also adding a bunch of AI features like Handwriting recognition, Smarter Note taking, search & Organising(FINALLY?), Facilitating seamless mixed inputs(so inputs from other devices I assume) and so on, even mentioning stuff like Software for non-tablet users and a methods marketplace(whatever that means =P) And by the looks of it, the next generation reMarkable 3 might have 3 sub-launches. Could either be price tiers with different features(So a cheaper rebranded reMarkable 2 hardware, in a plastic casing like you said, a new model with updated internals and maybe a colour E Ink version. Either that, or they go for the different sizes, A4/5/6, which would be awesome to see imo) And over where I'm living, they have started to push more in-store experiences. All the Virgin Megastores here now have a display reMarkable 2 and device being sold at the same price as the website. For me, the Type Folio was more interesting as I love tinkering with devices, and have setup a full development environment(albeit very basic) on the reMarkable for a great eye-strain free coding experience. I also like the Type Folio for the lower writing angle, as it lets me type in a heading real quick and continue handwriting, really helps me search for my notes on a per-page/note basis. But not having the option to disable it is bad. All things considered, the rM would be soooo much better just from added user customizability.

Great recap for 2023 and interesting ideas for 2024. I preordered my reMarkable 2 so have had it for quite some time and use it A LOT lol. I have noticed diminished battery capability over the years and have been mulling over what to get next and wondering when they might release a new device. Curious what will happen to original purchasers who were grandfathered in with free Connect benefits. I imagine that free Connect membership will cease for anyone who upgrades to a new device. Have also been watching your other videos and collaborative videos and my interest is growing in the upcoming SuperNote A5X 2. As I’m soon going to be in the market to upgrade, anxiously watching any videos you release on these 2 devices or on anything else that surprisingly appears as the best note taking device. Thanks for another informative video! 👍😊

Thank you for that summary. Really, really well done. I agree with a lot of your points. I am currently trying to incorporate Tiago Fortes Note Taking approach and yes, there is a lot of room for improvements. I don’t can or even want to compare to other platforms- I made my decision at a certain point in time and as long as the device improves my productivity (and convenience in some cases) I will keep using it until it breaks or so outdated, that it is not longer usable. Strangely the typewriter cover is perfect for me. I take notes in handwriting but when I create scripts, documents, presentations- I type as it becomes much faster. To be able to simply switch and not to use again different devices (or a screen keyboard, which then covers a lot of the screen and gives no haptic feedback) is a real added value for my style of working. The price tag is high - but as long as it is compensated by efficiency it can be worth it. This is a decision everybody has to make for himself. What do I miss the most? - A backlight function - A more precise eraser - A backup function (image) which could restore the device offline - A better Zoomfunction

I agree with every word of your critique! I've always been in love with this piece of hardware, but some of the moves the company has and hasn't made w/r/t the product have been so frustrating, and it feels like they don't really care. I sometimes wonder if they are really more focused on bulk corporate sales over individual users and that affects their choices. I can see how the keyboard folio and 2023 focus on typed text would make sense if corporate customers were asking for it. If I could wave a wand and change one thing right this second, I would want that option to turn infinite scroll off or on and eliminate that extra tap. I tend to write long stuff in deep focus and it utterly sucks, so now when I start a new notebook I just add a dozen pages at once to avoid this interruption to the flow, but I am not happy with it, and I still sometimes accidentally trigger the infinite scroll. argh. I also agree that an A6 size in the sleek package would be pretty sweet! This device was my entry into e-ink and I still enjoy using it, but now that I also have other devices and can compare the various features, I really wish it would keep up.

You may have made this, but as a potential future Remarkable user, I was more interested in what it can do today vs the history. That said the shortcomings for me are no search, no ~to-do tags (have to be able to pull these into a single search window), split screen and Kindle as all my reference books are in Kindle and I'd like to collect my thoughts from those references... And yes, all that points to a Supernote A5, but I can't see paying $500 for a used one (seems to be the going rate) and I don't want to wait until July+ for the next release.

Hmm... I have been using my RM2 almost daily for 3 years now and I must say: there's not much they could do for me to make the experience better. I'd prefer the screen roughness of RM1, but that's not updatetable, even a rough screen protector could not match the original. Sure, it would be nice to get some basic shapes and it was nice to get the straight lines, but other than that... there is not much they could do for me.

Hi Voja, after watching the 2023 recap videos about Remarkable 2, Kindle Scribe and Boox Note Air 3C, I'm still not sure which one out of three to buy - the primary usage would be the note taking and pdf markup (therefore it is important to mimic the handwriting), but what I'm especially interested in is the sketching/drawing and graphic design (black and white scenery, portraits etc., where the shading and pen sensitivity are pretty much necessary). How would you rang them according to those two interests? I hope you could help me with this

A great and unique review. I hope RM is listening. They have added some excellent features such as add-ons to Chrome and Microsoft word. However, generally they seem to be all over the place. As far as hardware, their current device seems slow. I would still like to see a front light design and agree that a small device could be a hit. The keyboard is interesting but in a world of sophisticated word processing software the software associated with the keyboard seems almost primitive. I continue to use my RM2, but they may be a company in a bit of trouble. I hope they work it out.

Bought the folio option and I d like to point out that there is absolute need to prioritize the addition of languages (in my case the greek language) for the physical keyboard. It couldn t be so hard to do it even with the next minor update. I think it Is standard for all other competitors. By the way congrats for your work. Thank you for watching :) No, I don't have any information about that. It could be possible, but if we take a look at the entire 2023, we can't see any evidence that their current development team can do something like that. It might be beyond their competency levels and that might be one of the reasons why the updates are the way they are.

Right now I have two bugs where you can't go back by swiping in the overview of documents, and also can't smoothly scroll with two fingers outside of documents. I don't ask for much, but they are making things worse sometimes. Like how I used to be able to move things around without it spazing out when my palm is touching. And then they changed the way selection works, makes no sense. Now you can't select whatever is within the line, then it selects nothing or some parts only. It was great when I missed something and could loop around without lifting the pen... And yeah, having to swipe and hit a button to make a new page is dumb. 21:20 Yees, that's the biggest flaw with rM2, I'm always scared to break it.

The format of this video is amazing imho: I was wondering how the remarkable ecosystem evolved in v3.x and you answered perfectly. I would love to see such a video also for the supernote tablets, since I am starting to look into those 😅 Also as a remarkable 2 user I am still stuck in v2.15 land since the hacks have not been ported to v3, and as a mathematician I would lose one very important functionality: quickly moving between pages on a document (which is crucial if I want to check a definition 50 pages back without having to put an effort into it... And this happens all the time in maths). Moreover I noticed that apart from infinite canvas, the amount of useful features that have been implemented in v3.x are... Non-existent (at least for my use case). And it's pretty frustrating that after more than 3 years on this platform I have seen very little effort put into improving the navigation of pdf documents, which would be highly appreciated in my field, where I think many professors and students would happily buy such a tool (and most of those who already did are less and less satisfied by it...)

Hello Voja, I think four years are not enough for an update of both Software and Hardware (Remarkable 3). As you mention, they should focus on being the best at taking notes. That the windows are very intuitive, that the compatibility is not good, but the best (unbeatable), that options can be customized with quick access in the corner according to the type of work being done, the screen light, that improves writing . on the edges of the sheet and other options that do not give anyone who buys the product any doubt that they are buying compatibility, quality and support. I swear that I dream of a Remarkable, but I want the investment to be no less than a choice that does not leave me with post-sales doubts, which I believe happens to many. That's why there is so much resale.

In software terms, 3.9 being a small update to me (being optimistic) opens the door for 4.0 being a large release (surely a large round number should indicate a meaningful upgrade.) It will be interesting to see what they implement. I'm still hoping for more language options.

In the world of software development calling any of the 3 tiny fixes as features that warant a new sub-version iteration (going from 3.8 to 3.9) is a complete disgrace. There are no other words to use for this example. This should have been labeled Update 3.8.1, and the release notes would be listing 1 bug fix and 2 minor tweaks, which are normally sorted in category of unlisted "other improvements". But, since they didn't do anything else, then they decide to sell it as features and a sub-version bump update.

“No more typing up notes” has to do with handwriting your notes and then typing them up. So the “convert to text”feature eliminates that, as most people will attempt to type up handwritten work. It’s not the idea of “never typing up thoughts/ideas” with a keyboard. States it right under the title: “Easily convert handwritten notes to typed text…” Thanks for the in-depth review.

I think Remarkable has excellent strengths in hardware and firmware but not particularly in software. It’s also a Linux based device so doesn’t get all the freebies that Android based devices get just by virtue of the Android ecosystem. Given this the focus on the folio is a reasonable strategy choice, and IMHO it adds a lot of value to the platform. Agreed though that changing the font on titles is not something that should be bragged about in release notes! I do hope the new CEO tries to involve you more, you are based in the same country it was a big loss to them that they didn’t try to link up with you.

Thanks for sharing! :) I agree, the hardware engineering and design on Remarkable products is excellent and inspiring! The software side, I've been in enough teams to recognize micro-management crumbs when I see them, and this software development mess reeks of a situation where a perfectly capable team is simply blocked, held in the dark, or in some other way prevented from doing their job to the best of their abilities by senior management not trusting their own team. I have absolutely no information, confirmation or any kind of proof of this, I'm simply saying what it looks like to me, as an outsider with considerable experience in development teams of various sorts.

I don’t know too much but I do agree with the hardware. I do not like the plastic form factor (I have a Supernote A5X and as much as I appreciate the software and focused writing functionality, its not enough YET along with my use case to get me to drop the Remarkable 2. I will be using my Supernote for some other things though and for whatever reason the current abilities of the Remarkable are fine to me but then again I’m not a software developer so my point of view will vastly differ from those who are technically inclined. It definitely. Has it limitations and I noticed they were only really focused on improvements for the Type Folio. They really need to listen to their users, there are some basic things we need on the writing side to improve our experience but for now the basics of just taking notes it works.

Thanks for your careful videos, Voya. I bought the RM2 last month, and was surprised to find no offer of software for LEARNING one’s handwriting. Since then I looked at loads of video in the hope of finding a discussion of this; I also wrote to RM about it. Nothing. For a device designed for writing by hand to offer no personalised handwriting recognition seems to me insane. I bought a computer/tablet in 2009, and the first thing they asked me to do was to copy texts they offered so that the device could learn my handwriting. So, when I now use the RM2, and then turn it into typescript, it comes out garbled, often unrecognisable. Any help on this? The second issue is that the device seems to offer no way to create your own dictionary- for e.g names, abbreviations, etc. again: Why on earth not? Surely it’s not that difficult? I’d be grateful for any help with this. I’m now seriously considering returning the device.

If you go to the Remarkable Facebook page, you should be able to find people's experiences where they would share exactly where and how the wear and tear happens. It's mostly on the corners, and nothing that ruins the device, but it does wear and tear faster than those people had hoped.

What is one main disadvantage of real paper, always has been? Yes, water. So make this flat-fish rated IP67. THAT would be a real world improvement over paper. And cut that magnetic gimmicks. Magnetism only collects ferromagnetic grind-dust/chips in corresponding workshop-environments. Fix that pen mechanically. Put a thinfilm solarcell on the back of the device, so you can put it into the sunlight to charge it up. There's enough surface on that fish and it doesn't consume that much electricity, so that's a fit. Make one A4 for standard/stationary writing and one reduced functionality A6 device as a pocketable scribble/"input only"- device which syncs automatically with it's bigger A4-brother. Make it snappier. As of today, it looks soooo sluggish ... :(

In fact, I am not at all enrolled in the beta testing. This was just automatic updates set to ON, and receiving a regular update. It happened just yesterday. Thank you for the link! It was very helpful. I complained there, and they identified the problem. For the moment, one can use only the MARKER to deselect the notebook name and position the cursor. In the next version, they promise to make it possible again to do the notebook name correction by tapping on the text with a finger. (As for me at least, putting the marker aside was a preferable move when the keyboard pops up.) @@MyDeepGuide

Oh, then it must have just started rolling out. Well, even so, as a user, reporting the problem to them will ensure that they will be aware of it. The problem won't go away on it's own, they have to fix it, and the best way to make sure that happens is to report the problem to them :)

@@GaryLangEngr I get the distraction free focus, but once a product starts to slow down that becomes a major distraction. Features like infinite page, layers, and geometric shapes are difficult to implement on an older and slower CPU. Maybe adding this was a mistake? Also, once someone sees the resolution of a 300ppi device, like the Scribe, the RM2 becomes noticeably dated. I would be happy with a spec bump alone, call it the RM2s.

@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 6 ай бұрын
Well, your starting premise is wrong. Who said that Remarkable is a failure?
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 6 ай бұрын
No, it's not a broad term, it's a very exact term, so you are either using it incorrectly, or you are trying to distract from the fact that your original point was wrong and not based on facts, or are not the type of a person who is able to say "Sorry my bad, I was wrong to generalize and assume there." Which it is, is going to be made 100% clear by your follow up response. More importantly, weren't you the person who also said "you shouldn't use or amplify statements that allude to words that aren't supported by access to data"? Well then, where is the data for "KZfaqrs say Remarkable is a failure" and "over a million users disagree with almost everything the KZfaqrs say"? Where's your data coming from in these overly generalized statements, other than the press release from the company that tooted it's own horn, just before they needed to do an investment round that they were now valuated at 1B usd (which for a private company is just a non-verifiable estimate without any legal standing or obligations), and that they shipped 1M units of both RM1 and RM2 since 2017. Do you actually have any data, or are you "amplifying statements that haven't been verified by data"? You are putting an equal sign between non-verifiable 1M shipped units of RM1 and RM2, since 2017 until now and the number of current real-world users, and not taking into consideration the returns, the defects, users who did buy it, but never use it, or that a fair number of those users tried the device, and then went on over to another platform or returned to their old platform. Nope, you seem to conveniently ignore all of that, slap a big fat equal-or-higher-than sign and say without any shred or an inkling of data to support your statement, that not only are there now "over a million Remarkable users" out there (which is factually unsupported), but on top of that, "they disagree with almost everything KZfaqrs say" (again factually unsupported and unverifiable because of the overly generalized nature of the statement). You just demonstrated, using your own words, how biased you are and how the standards you hold others against don't apply to you, and that seriously devalues the weight and credibility of your supposed arguments and statements.

Do you honestly believe that I would be even mentioning this if I was talking out of my own ass? Yes, I am very familiar with the organizations and the rules (how these things actually work in practice in Norway, not on paper), but I'm not going to be publicly elaborating on that, as I live and work in this country, and I too want to grow my company, over time :D. And while we don't have publicly available the valuation report, to see how did they get to that number, the cool thing about Norway is that all of the tax reporting is a matter of public record (even private companies), and you can check for yourself. www.proff.no/selskap/remarkable-as/oslo/internettdesign-og-programmering/IF661Z80C2C So these are the numbers throughout the lifetime of the company: - Total sales: ~670M usd - Total profit: ~33M usd (only 4.9% net profit margin, which is by any measure considered as low) - Tax Reportable: ~22M usd Liquidity of the company is calculated as Satisfactory, but barely and on the borderline with Weak categorization, with a 15.1% decline. Profitability of the company is calculated as Good with a 20.9% decline. Stability is calculated as Good, with a 4.8% rise. This is the reliable, operating, non-fictional, non-estimates data regarding the company's health and overall state and it says that this is a company with barely Satisfactory Liquidity with a declining trend, Good profitability with a strong declining trend (although I expect this to get a positive bump when 2023 figures are calculated due to the release of the Type Folio) and Good stability, with a subtle rising trend. So, a strong, successful, and stable company, but with a notable declining trend. And before you jump on it, yes, I do understand how valuations work, but whichever approach they used (valuation ratios, DCF analysis, IRR, or combination of all), you'd have to get very creative and optimistic with market growth, sales and value projections, and cash flow to reach the figure of 1B valuation. I don't doubt the valuation, it is a matter of fact, obviously, but the data strongly suggests, that the valuation in question, in my opinion, seems to be based on very optimistic, non-tangible hopes, projections, and plans, not on the factual state or trend of the company as it stands today.

Interesting info. I just bought the Rm2 and enjoy using it a lot. I do hope to get some serious updates to the ability to read and copy text from epubs and PDFs. The reading is pretty good, but I really would like to be able to copy text and maybe have a dictionary available for quick word definitions and checkups. There's also shapes they could introduce, like boxes, a triangle, and a circle. I really like the feel of the device and enjoy the fact that I'll never need to look for my notes again. I think I fit their market perfectly, as I see the distraction free philosophy as a huge plus. Screw android and their endless apps. But remarkable needs to start ironing out their software to make it as smooth and intuitive as possible. I think Remarkable would do well to drop the price of their device to something more manageable. It's way too expensive right now for less committed people. I think somewhere around 300 € with the pen would be a good spot, if in any way possible. It's the interaction and feel with the device that's a bullseye in my opinion. They don't need to worry about powerful processors or gimmicky features IMHO. Just make the things I do with their hardware sing. Great feedback in your part. Remarkable would do well in paying attention.

The way they are selling more is obviously Marketing. I see the ads everywhere. Don't see Boox ads. The platform is getting a bit confused, agreed, but it can still pass as a decent no-distraction note taker for all the basics. People like it and they seem to willing to pay extra for design, feel, and whatever other intangibles

It is, but I just wish that they'd actually do some more serious work on it to improve things that have been stagnating for quite some time. 2022 introduced a lot more focused and useful updates and has advanced the platform considerably. It's disappointing to see a complete change in the direction and quality delivered in 2023.
