12:52 Summary
I have been writing notes all my life as a student and then as a professional. In 2017 I started to write my notes digitally, and in 2020 I switched from the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil using the Notability app to the Remarkable and then the Remarkable 2.
My primary reason for switching was my eyes; I think the switch from face to face meetings to constant online meetings in lockdown took its toll on my eye health and my eyes felt like they were getting strained. Although the scientific evidence is weak that e-ink reduces eye strain, the change to the Remarkable to help my eyes worked wonderfully and I suffer from much less eye strain now.
My secondary reason was as the Remarkable 2 is a single purpose device there are no distractions no pings no e-mails no temptations to look at social media. This change to the Remarkable is part of a digital minimalism journey I am on, and it is working well if you can call more devices digital minimalism.
Having used this device for several months, I decided to create this review from a professionals perspective who is in meetings for hours a day and needs a reliable device to take notes on.
I hope you find this review useful and if you are interested in any comparison reviews, please let me know in the comments.

I just ordered mine today. There have been a lot of negative comments on other reviews about what R2 *doesn't* do, but the R2 being a dedicated tool with only one purpose in life was the biggest selling point for me.
@AlexSamuels

How exciting! I have to say I have seen people make negative comments about what it doesn't do too. Although I can't help but think they miss the point, it specifically aims to be a paper replacement, not a full-featured tablet, and as a paper replacement, it is IMHO the best. I hope you don't have to wait too long till you get yours.

@@AlexSamuels I totally agree. From what I understand, everyone has fallen in love with the paper screen feel, but because it doesn’t have all the fancy bells and whistles the tablets have, they complain about it.

Which is why I bought it and now I regret that decision. I have two main issues with the device. I found the responsiveness 50/50 at best. There are times I start to write and the letters appear immediately and other times there is a frustratingly long pause before anything appears. How long you ask? If I'm writing the letter t, the vertical line will not appear until after I complete the horizontal line. Mere seconds, but if you write quick enough, you can be a letter or two into the word before the first letter appears. But that isn't my biggest problem. The most frustrating part for me is the character recognition. I found it frequently misinterpreted what I wrote and correcting made it worse. It would place my corrections at the end of the line instead of where I wrote them. I wrote something that was basically a check list. I corrected something that was on line 2. It placed what I wrote at the end of line 3. I hate using pen and paper, but what I write is where I place it on the page. It doesn't magically jump to another line. For the price this item costs, it should perform much better. I can't image trying to write long detailed notes on this device and having it mess up the lines when I convert to text.
@michaelpace8429
@michaelpace8429 2 жыл бұрын
Okay, so, I'm still not thrilled with its performance, but I'm changing the way I write and it appears to be improving its performance. I need to write more slowly. However, It wasn't my handwriting that caused text from line 2 to be appended to the text on line three. But I've only managed to recreate that particular problem one additional time. I'm going to use is a lot in the coming days to really stress test it. It it performs at least as well as it did a moment ago, then I won't return it. I won't return it as long as I believe my problems are caused by my poor handwriting.

I started using reMarkable 2 one week ago and I agree with all your points. I'm a professional software developer, UI/UX expert and indie writer and game designer. In my work I wrote a lot (yes, even software borns on paper...), and I love to write. Usually I use fountain pen because I like the feeling of ink on paper. I chose reMarkable 2 to help me keep all my notes and document organized and always available. The simple possibility to cut/copy and paste blocks of text and sketches is amazing and save me a lot of time. Obviusly it's a one purpose device. But if you love to write and you love technology reMarkable 2 absolutely worth the price and the experience. Thanks for your review, Alessio Corridori

This is an impressive review. The pot plant in the background gives a vintage office feel! It’s great to hear an English accent. I’m a lawyer and have umpteen notebooks per case. I like to write with a good fountain pen. The contents of my notes are confidential. Is that preserved? I’d like to move to something like this and the idea of saving paper sounds good. Are you sure I won’t lose any work? Bobbie
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bobbie, thank you for your kind words; you might not want to watch any more of my videos as in the latest ones, I replaced the plant with a Dyson fan 😂. I have never lost any work; one of the Remarkable ecosystem's advantages is how easy it is to transfer files on and off the device. So if you have a few PDF's you need to review for a case, you can load them onto the Remarkable cloud system and make notes on them and then take them off and, if you want, e-mail them to someone else if you need. I now also use the Remarkable to electronically sign documents by converting them into PDFs, putting them on the Remarkable, signing them and then e-mailing them where they need to go. The could storage is Google's encrypted servers, so it is as secure as you believe Google to be. You can find details here: support.remarkable.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002648297-Connecting-to-the-reMarkable-cloud I will not say that writing on the remarkable is as good as writing on your chosen paper with your favourite fountain pen and ink. However, as you know, having so many paper notes has it's own issues and using the Remarkable tablet for me is a much more efficient system that allows me to have the notes I need where I need them. I hope that helps, but if you have any more specific questions, please let me know.

Thanks, Florian, for the comment. I have never used Paperlike, although I have heard good things. However, I use my iPad practically as my primary laptop, and I am about 99% sure that the matt effect that improves the writing will drive me mad as it slightly distorts the screen 😂. With the iPad Pro, in comparison to the Remarkable, I would say I don’t like the writing experience but say I have written on an iPad screen for over 1,000 hours over the last few years, and you do get used to it. Hi there, thanks for the review. I wonder if this device is also useful to read and work with pdf files. I read lots of papers, and do classes at the university, so I am looking for a device that allows me to read and work with pdfs, and next take my notes as I would do in a notebook. Thanks!
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricardo, thank you for the comment. I think the answer is yes and no, depending on your specific use case. So daily, I use this device with PDFs. It is straightforward to transfer PDFs on and off the device from a PC or Mac. As a reader, the device works OK Its a decent size And clear enough. Writing on PDFs and transferring them and what you have written is brilliant and one of the best use cases for the Remarkable 2. Separately taking notes as you would in a notebook works brilliantly too. So the limitations of PDFs are three-fold: 1. You can't add new pages into a pdf if you wanted to put your notes on a separate page but in the same document. 2. If you are writing notes on the document that you're reading on the Remarkable 2, it can be a little bit fiddly but not unworkable to transfer from your notes back to the separate file that is the PDF back to your notes again. 3. Finally and I just mentioned this in my latest video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7eof9xmqpbbj40.html. If you want to use handwriting to text conversion, you can't use this in a PDF for some reason. To summarise, this device works well, as a PDF reader and really well to write on PDFs and separately to take notes as long as the limitations above won't be an issue. I hope this helps.

Awesome review! Just a question, how would you say the device would hold up with intense note writing? Just concerned with the screen being smaller then paper, if that would effect the note taking during long wordy University lectures.

Hi Sam, thank you for your kind words. You quickly get used to the screen size; I made that transition about 4 years ago (from paper to this size screen). The device is designed specifically for intensive writing; it has great battery life, and after you have written for hundreds and then thousands of hours on it, paper can seem very last century. Hope that helps; let me know if you have any more questions. 😊

Thank you very much for the review! I'm a physics student and I'm considering buying a remarkable or an iPad for taking notes and writing summaries. The thing I'm worried about with the remarkable, is that I get the idea the remarkable takes quite a lot of time rendering with zooming in and with writing. Also I'm used to using many colors for underlining important things, but remarkable is only black and white. What is your experience with this? Another question I have, is it possible to write in landscape? That way you have more width and can maybe write more instead of having to zoom in, to fit as much as possible on one line/page. Or do you feel like writing in portrait mode and not zooming in, is good for taking notes? Also is it worth to buy the more expensive marker, the one with the built in eraser?
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, great questions 👍. I am going to ask one more you didn't ask, is it worth buying the Remarkable 2 (RM2) now you have to pay £7.99 pm to use it properly, for me, yes but it is a consideration. OK, so the iPad is great to write with and using an app like Notability is much more powerful than the RM2. I use my iPad daily basically as my laptop, and honestly, if money is no object, I would get both. I will assume you have a computer and don't need an iPad to be a computer. I only have two issues personally with the iPad to write with, and if neither is a concern, get an iPad. 1.) I was getting headaches from looking at the iPads screen too much; the remarkable 2s screen stopped this, and this alone is worth it for me. 2.) there are no distractions with the RM2; I am more creative and focused on not accessing the web or games or e-mails. If neither of my two points above is a concern, I would go for the iPad. So with the RM2, I don't render and zoom too much; I don't need to for my notes and most other content I put on it is made for A4, and I find it OK to read and write on in A5 without zooming. If you need to zoom on occasion, I honestly don't think it's too bad (although not as smooth as an iPad). Personally, it would be great to have more clours, and I know what you mean however it's not just back and white there is also grey, so you can highlight things that you need to stand out, it's not as good as lots of different colours but is so much better than not having that option. Because you can highlight, I don't find the lack of additional colours an issue, although it would be nice to have. You can write in landscape; I only do that if I am working on a PDF that is formatted in landscape. I prefer to take my notes in portrait, but that's a personal preference thing. Regarding the pen, it's a money thing again. Is it worth £80 to have a rubber at the end of the pen 🤔? Probably not. Do I use it daily? Yes. Would I personally spend £80 on the better pen? Yes. However, I am not a student, and I am getting money off this device as, for me, it's a tax-deductible business expense. Would I have saved the money when I was a student? Yes. I would have bought the cheaper pen at university and got slightly annoyed every time I needed a rubber 😂 but back then, it was my parent's money, not my own. In summary, if I were going to be taking a lot of handwritten notes at university, I would go for the RM2 over the iPad. I think I might also go for an iPad over a laptop unless I needed a computer. I hope that helps; I know it's been a lengthy response, but please feel free to ask any more questions you may have. 😊

Three questions for you Alex: - I am a fast/small writer. Does it do a good job in "catching up" and creating details (no smudge effects writings)? - Does it allow you to keep both the original handwritten version of your notes as well as the "converted to text" version? - Are the text within the handwritten notes and/or "converted to text" notes searchable from within the tablet? Thanks!!!
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
So to answer your first question, it should not need to “catch up” it should not be possible for you to outpace it in terms of writing speed, and there should be no smudging. I am assuming that you are not writing at superhuman speeds; it will be fine. 👍 Writing to text, it’s more interesting 🤔; you can only keep your handwriting on the device. You have to send your conversion to text to an e-mail when you are converting it. No, unfortunately, you can’t search your notes. 😔, It’s annoying because the technology must be there, but as of today, you can’t. I hope that helps, although I appreciate it won’t be some of the answers you wanted.

Hey Alex, I really appreciate the review. I have a quick question - I’m a medical student and enjoy writing as a learning tool. I have an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard Case, but frankly I’m not using it as much anymore. I try to read PDF textbooks on it, but it definitely hurts my eyes and it’s difficult for me to focus on a screen for a long time. This seems like it would be good option for my need, but I’m having trouble justifying it when I already have an amazing (and expensive) iPad with all the accessories. What do you think?
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aditya, I get it totally, and I had the same dilemma. For me, I would say if you can afford it, purchase it. Here is my rationale. 1. Your eyes hurt; your eye health is so important, and if they are hurting, it has got to be worth seeing if the remarkable can reduce or stop that. 2. Your studying medicine, the right tools to help with your education now could pay off significantly in the coming years. 3. I love my iPad, which is essentially with the magic keyboard case a laptop, but I love the distinction between the devices. The remarkable helps me focus as it's distraction-free. Overall, if reading PDFs and making notes is something you are going to be doing most days, I think this is an excellent investment. I know what you mean about the iPad, and you will obviously still use it, but it is not as good a transition from book pen and paper as the remarkable 2 is. Btw, if the price is a concern, the actual experience of the original remarkable is similar enough that it might be a way to get the benefits at a reduced cost. I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions, please let me know.

I have been trying the R2 that someone else has bought and it does a good job reading my terrible handwriting and feels great. Hi Mary, thank you for the comment and question. So the good news is the text that Remarkable converts gets sent to an e-mail address as text and not as a PDF, so then it is a simple job of copy-paste to your word editor of choice. It talks about PDFs because you only put PDFs and EPUBs on, and that is how the document files come off, but the text conversion itself is plain text like you want. Hope that helps 😊

This comment is an excellent point and does not just apply to doctors; as a regulated Financial Advisor in the UK, I have a similar issue to your wife. I think there are two things to note: 1. Remarkable don't store the data Google do; this is what Remarkable say: "The reMarkable cloud service is hosted on Google's Cloud Platform and stored in Europe. The reMarkable cloud is secured with Google's encryption at rest, trusted boot, and physical security. All data is also encrypted on rest and on transfer." I don't know if you trust Google more than Remarkable, but that is who is storing the data and how and where it is stored. 2. One of the things I like about the Remarkable ecosystem is how well the cloud network works and, importantly, how easy it is to transfer notes off the Remarkable and onto another system, so I do not have notes on my Remarkable for more than a few days. I hope that helps.

I move my notes from the RM 2 system once I don't need them on the device anymore; my personal notes I put in one place, and at work, we use Microsoft Sharepoint. You can leave them on RM 2, but I would say the file system is decent, but if you already have a digital file system that works, I would make RM 2 fit into that. RM 2 is expensive. I am sure it will come down in price eventually, but it is still relatively new, so I wouldn't wait personally. I will be open and say I bought it as part of an early bird discount, so it was cheaper. However, the more significant thing for me is that this is a business expense as I use it for work which significantly reduces the net tax cost for me. If the price is an issue, you can buy just the RM 1 no cover for £299, RM 1 and 2 feel different plastic vs metal, but the functionality is pretty much identical. Both RM 1 and 2 have a 30 day returns policy, so there should not be much risk with either if you don't think it works for you or represents good value once it's in hand. I hope this helps.

@Bessie Hillum I get it, I really do. I still recommend the remarkable 2 even with the subscription but it does mean that people who were struggling to afford it before might not be able to now. I think there is a bit of a global subscription bandwagon now though and although I don’t have an issue with any, it can make life very expensive. One time licence fees used to be an option and a valid way to pay developers but now you are not given the same choice.

@Bessie Hillum Now that is a fascinating comment, and I half agree with it 🤔. I think you are right about the false economy with so many tech products. However, I think that misses the profit made through subscription models; it is not all for the good of poor software engineers 😉. Don't get me wrong, I get the point of the subscription model, and I get the costs behind the scenes. I can also understand peoples frustration when it leads to increased profits and company valuations. It's funny, I work in the world of wealth management where people do make money, and companies do make profits from, in essence, a subscription model. There are often calls for reduced costs partly because of a lack of understanding of the costs involved in providing a service. Thank you for this very thought-provoking comment 👍.

If you don’t buy the subscription, what other features are missing besides text conversion, Dropbox and cloud storage? I mean, let’s say you use it for two years, and you don’t give them the extra $200 in subscription fees, what basic features are you actually losing? Can you honestly really use this device easily and properly without those basic features? Could you even install updates? In a way, it almost feels like they want to hold our files hostage and charge us to use our own content. But maybe I misunderstand?
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 2 жыл бұрын
@@jtaylor7572 It's interesting as I was thinking about this yesterday and you're right especially regarding the files. But I think people could use this to take notes and not have a connect subscription especially as there is no commitment to connect you can always pay for a month if you say needed to make a presentation with it occasionally. As a minimum I would need the have connect light as I do leave some files on there and it would be more work to take them on and off. Concerningly it says you get access to fast sync. I use almost instant online file transfers all the time, if it is much slower without connect then that would be a deal-breaker and by deal-breaker, I think I mean I would pay for it. However, some people might not need any additional features or storage so it's a very good question.

I get very disorganized with my notes and multiple notebooks. As most if my meetings cover different topics, I want some process whereby I can point out certain parts of my notes from a meeting and send it off to a file for each topic that's online so that I can keep the lije topics together. I would also like to then be able to print it out as usual if need be. So that would be my main purpose for using this product and I'm wondering if that makes sense?
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheral, that makes perfect sense, so you have a few advantages with the Remarkable for your needs. Obviously, you can run a few notebooks in a meeting and flip between them for different topics, which is easier than having numerous real notebooks in a meeting, and this is something I do most days. However, something else you can do on the remarkable which you can't do with a notebook (as easily) is copy and paste. Sometimes I want to move notes around a note or between notebooks, and cut, copy and paste are really easy to use. You can print your notes but not off the device directly, but from a PC/MAC; it's easy enough. I hope that helps, but please feel free to come back if you have any questions. 😊

Hi Kei, the Remarkable 2 is so much better for note taking than the A5X. I also feel like I have wasted money with the A5X. The RM2 feels like having a paper note pad (although it is heavier than a note pad). The other advantage is the cloud access is good so you can download the RM app on your iPad and see all the notes, share them and export them from your iPad (as long as both devices have WiFi). As there is a 30 day money back guarantee with the RM2 there seems very little risk to try as long as it’s affordable in the first place. I, hope that helps.

Do you know if once the pdf is loaded can I make notes on that pdf.send it via email then refresh it and start over fresh. This would be a great solution for a paper work estimates, with the handwriting to text this would make our office very happy from having to decipher bad handwriting. We have done the iPad, the only problem is glass breaks and scratches easy.What is your opinion on that?
@AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
So you can write notes and e-mail them and then erase each page, or you could do what I do and put multiple versions of the PDF on the device to start. Then they can be in the cloud, and someone could pick them up from there. However, if you see my video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7eof9xmqpbbj40.html, I say handwriting to text does not work on a PDF on the Remarkable; it's a frustrating limitation. My view is, if the iPad is working for you, I would suggest buying heavier duty cases like this: geni.us/Sp6PB. Hopefully, that would address the issues you have with the iPad. Although I have not had any problems with it, you can damage the Remarkable 2 as well, so making the iPads more rugged might be your best option. I hope that helps.

I’m looking to make it a “planner” for my home life. Schedules, Budgets, projects, cooking recipes, meal planning/jotting down grocery lists. Basically running my entire household of 6 on it. Is that doable for this product? 3. Can I share my notes with our Apple products? Send my documents to my husbands tablet/phone/MacBook? My main goal to feel like I’m writing/organizing in a planner but I hate buying the planner refills, it’s wasteful. Also my eyes are straining badly from my phone/tablets/computer screens. Hi Ainslie, the short answer is yes just do it 😂😉. But the longer answer is. 1. I ended up designing my own template from a few sources and used that daily. The ones from Etsy should work fine, I think I tried some a while ago but didn't find any that quite fit my use case. 2. Absolutely, for a long time I ran daily, weekly and monthly planners from the RM2. I split them into 3 months to make them a manageable size it worked well. I have changed my personal system recently but not because the old one didn't work (I am just going through some life changes that became so big I found trying to plan it normally wasn't working for me 😂, but that's not Remarkable's fault 😉). It can handle complex PDFs if you can find a template in PDF that can work for you the RM2 is a nice place to update it daily. 3. Yes, Remarkable have apps for every platform. I use a mac myself and my notes are just there. As well as a tablet and phone. If once you have update your note you go out of it, it will upload to the cloud (automatically). Then in an app your husband or you can see your files (see but not edit). Although you can export the PDF from these apps. You can also upload from these apps PDFs onto the RM2. I have used it basically as you described and it should work perfectly. 👍, I'm sure there will be a small learning curve, but ironically I have just filmed next week's video today, why I use the RM2 daily (or something like that as a title) because for as you have described to not get eye strain or be distracted I don't think there is anything better that I have used. I hope that helps 🙏.

Yes, I would recommend the RM1; It is lighter than the RM2, which is good. When I first got the RM2, I thought the weight was not pleasant; you get used to it, but if I could have the RM2 weigh less, I would. The functionality is identical, and I marginally prefer the RM1 writing feel. So yes, I like the RM1, and if the price is a consideration would go for that. That said because so far, the RM1 sounds better, the RM2 does feel better built, and I find the magnetic attachment of the pen a big thing, and I like the eraser on the back of the RM2 marker plus (even more expense). When I bought mine, I did get an early bird discount, my device is a business expense, and the ascetics are essential for me as I will be using it in client facing meetings. I hope that helps and if you have any more questions, please come back to me.

Thanks, Alex P, for the compliment, so there is good news and bad news. The good news is I find the convert to text feature accurate enough. However, there are two severe limitations. 1. Once you convert to text, you have to e-mail it; you cannot leave it on the device. So it is useful for occasional use but not as practical as your primary use for the device. 2. You cannot use the feature at all on an existing PDF. From your description of your use case, it sounds like this might mean that this is not the right device for you. @AlexSamuels
@AlexSamuels 3 жыл бұрын
@Alex P So in terms of text editing, they will be identical. The hardware and software are pretty similar; to only difference for text is that the iPad Pro has a 120 Hz refresh rate and the Air 60 Hz (basically the screen on the Pro refreshes twice as often), so when you are writing with an Apple Pencil there will be a bit more lag on the iPad Air. It is the sort of thing that would drive me mad 🙈, hence why I am always looking for the “perfect device” however, most people wouldn’t notice, especially if they have never used an iPad Pro in the first place. There should be a new iPad Pro announced this month (that’s what the rumours are saying), so if the 120 Hz was something you wanted, you could wait to see if a new iPad Pro is launched, and that might be either the device you want to go for or might mean there are offers on the existing IPad Pro as they sell it off. You will know yourself if the refresh rate is important to you, if not the iPad Air should work perfectly.
