The Articulation Prize 2019 was won by Zach Taylor for his heartfelt and intelligent discussion of Rembrandt’s self-portraits, an adaption of which was filmed by HENI Talks at the National Gallery.
Zach explores how through facing the darkness in his personal life, Rembrandt brings his viewers into the light. With his mastery of chiaroscuro and references to the great artists of the past, he positioned himself as a master of a new age: confident in his talents yet honest about the effects of painful life experiences.
Articulation is an initiative that provides a platform for students to develop their confidence and ability by expressing their opinions, thoughts and ideas through the arts and public speaking. The initiative seeks to champion young people regardless of background and experience. Articulation began in 2006 at the Roche Court Educational Trust and merged with the National Gallery in 2022.

Zach, your eloquent account of Rembrandt and his work made me rather emotional. Having visited RembadntHuis myself, your brief guided tour took me back there. Congratulations on such an amazing piece of work.

Zach Taylor amazingly described my own feelings when I visited the Museum Het Rembrandthuis in 2013. He saw what I saw, he felt what I felt, though he was able to put in words those thoughts, those feelings we both shared and which I still can't. Zach Taylor helped me see Rembrandt's works from a different and fascinating perspective. HENI Talks, thank you both !!!

Zach, do you know that Rembrandt's final works were about Simeon, finally hold the Rescuer of the world in his arms & The father, still waiting for his lost son? In both pictures you can see the relief it gave Rembrandt at the end of his turbulent life, to finally know these facts for sure in his own soul and depicting them as he did: The end of his struggle with all the darkness was over at the end of his life, when everything seems lost. Because he trusted finally in God. I thank you for your thoughts about our most loved painter and wish you all the best in your life! 🌷love from Holland & stay safe

Such a fantastic document this vid is ! Sadly broken down by the last not so captivating remark..... Please do not annexate . Leave the morals where it belongs : your own words, showing us by making us see. Which is beautiful, convincing and sufficiant in itself.

Thanks for your feedback Pieter, I appreciate it. I see what you mean about keeping my point concise and leaving it with a closing statement. The brief for my original ARTiculation talk was to communicate how the art affects me personally and to be direct and engaging with the audience, for example by asking questions. However I will take your advice into account in future in my writing.

Constructive criticism from Pieter, but we think this is still a fantastic response to Rembrandt, and we personally love the rhetorical question at the end - which feels very timely at this trying moment. You're one of our greatest stars, Zach! Hope you're keeping safe and well.
