Speaker bases for the iPod family of MP3 players have been all the rage, and third-party manufacturers have released a host of products designed to charge the player while playing songs. Now that the Sony Ericsson Walkman range has asserted its dominance as the music phone of choice, it stands to reason that it also has a special dock.
Design
The MDS-60 has a very sporty look, from the orange mesh covered speakers to the drink bottle cap that covers the docking port. The well thought out design features a removable stand that also doubles as a cover to protect the speakers when the product is stored. This reduces the dimensions and means that the MDS-60 can be thrown into a bag without worrying about it being damaged or taking up too much space.
Unlike the more sophisticated MDS-70, and almost three times more expensive, the MDS-60 has no remote control, inputs, or equalizer. There are only two buttons: on / off and volume.
The MDS-60 bears the unmistakable orange mark of the Sony Ericsson Walkman series, but compatibility is not limited to Walkman phones. The mount will work with any model that has the patented charging port, including the K750i and K610i. In terms of playlist navigation, we found that it works best with the chocolate bar models like the K series models mentioned above, W700i, W800i, W810i, and W950i. The large snap hook on the back of the W300i cover didn't sit very well against the dock, and opening the phone to operate the keyboard made the viewing angle of the main screen uncomfortable.
The MDS-60 can be powered by the AC adapter or by four AA batteries. It also broadcasts FM radio as long as the phone has a tuner, and we found the reception to be surprisingly clear. For optimal clarity, you should listen to the radio with the base connected to the mains, as we notice a decrease in performance when we switch to battery mode.
Support is limited to two functions: charging your phone and giving your MP3s a booming voice. Some may dislike the lack of equalizer and remote control, but since an equalizer function is included in the Walkman range of phones, it's a logical omission.
performance
We found the audio quality to be very good, with only slight damping at the end of the bass. The maximum volume wasn't high enough for a total dance party, but it would certainly be enough for the strange stress-relieving dance in the hall. Loud sound was also a very stimulating way to wake up - the phone's alarm clock will wake you up right away when it comes from those speakers.
The MDS-60 would be a stylish addition to your nightstand for hassle-free nighttime charging and some late-night music.
