Listen, Mom... You are doing an incredible job and you are 100% correct on the reason you are homeschooling because you can see exactly where you can speed up and where you need to slow down. My 12 year-old son JUST got back into a traditional school on 11/17/22 after being homeschooled for all of 6th grade and part of 7th. I was super concerned about the transition and because I did not use an accredited curriculum, he had to take both Math and Reading placement tests... I knew Reading would be a breeze, but I was concerned that we focused too much on Algebra (trying to work ahead) in 6th grade and likely skipped over some things the kids learned in school... So, he ended up passing both placement tests AND had to take MAP tests along with everyone else at school last month. He scored in the 91st percentile for Math and 90th percentile for Reading... He was placed back in Gifted classes based on his records from 5th grade - and when I tell you the kid is doing an incredible job... Straight A report card that was impressive because he had no room for error since he started the semester so late, and he is rocking an A in every subject right now - Oh, and beating the entire class in online math games. I said all that to say... There were quite a few things in the books we used that weren't super clear so it was not easy for me to teach him, but we would skip over those things and move on to something that was easier for me to teach (not necessarily an easier unit). We used Khan Academy a lot and the focus that we placed AHEAD of what was in his curriculum made it easy for him to understand what they are working on right now. So, it's not you or your son because trust me, I can show you the math book we used for 6th grade and we skipped a lot - so many blank pages, but he still ended up ahead of the game and blew his standardized tests out of the water when he hadn't taken one since 4th grade. Keep doing what you're doing; I really feel our relaxed method of homeschooling is the reason he jumped back in to a brick and mortar with no problems. & honestly, the only reason I did not continue homeschooling is because he is an only child so he needed the socialization - plus, he wanted to go back because I guess I was kinda boring 😁

The benefits of homeschooling put front and center! Sometimes it’s not even their knowledge load, it’s the day - their mental state at the time of the test. These days, school related issues or not, happen. As we enter a new time in life with a 3rd on the way and a 3 year old going through temper tantrums, I have to remind myself that we homeschool year-round for ‘this’ reason: we can throw in the towels when we need to and that’s ok. Tonight will be able cuddles and emotional learning and tomorrow we will try again - fresh and new.

You are so right in that we have the gift to really pull back when we need to. I definitely understand when it comes to the 3 year old stage! The tantrums feel like running a marathon right now, but I know it’s only a stage that he just needs a little extra help through.

I think as homeschooling moms we're so hard on ourselves because we truly care so very much. I think you're doing great sweet mama. All you do, you do with so much care and love. That goes a long way. Stay strong ok ..you got this!! 🙌😉

I don’t think you are doing anything wrong but your son needs some help with math and you need to work out where he’s struggling!!! We’ve been here with math and other subjects!!! Don’t be defeated as you doing a good job!!! I have a kid who feels like he has get a perfect score so we have to find other ways of finding out what he retains!!!
