This faire in particular is the New York Renaissance Faire. I am not affiliated with the organisers of this faire, just a merry attendant. (Our tickets do say ‘complimentary’ though because Danny knows, like, everyone in the faire so thank you to whoever hooked us up ;D)

I'm a performer at this faire (a member of the fae, some of the fantastical creatures you caught in this video). Wanted to let you know that this video has been passed around the whole cast; we were heartbroken when the faire was (understandably) cancelled this season, but seeing this wonderful tribute to the fair brought the entire cast so much joy. These performers are all such dear friends of mine, and everyone was just so tickled and delighted to watch this and find some of our favorite moments from this past season. Thank you so much for this wonderful season, and we hope to see you two (and everyone else) at the faire next year. Merry meet, merry part, merry meet again!

As a Scottish person who grew up in countries with zero experience of the Ren Faire or its 'inclusive' standards, I am known to get a little emotional, shedding a teardrop or 2 upon hearing traditional Scottish bagpipes. Sadly, the only response the Ren Faire pipes evoked was the urge to yell "Stop it! You're hurting my ears!" (edit:clarity)

I remember specifically when I was little I went to my states Renaissance Faire and my mom tried my hair up into pigtails. On the entrance they had some characters greeting people, and specifically this jester shouting down at me "Hey! I like your hair!" Then later the jester was walking around talking to people, and he saw me, pointed and said, "Hey I remember you, 'I like your hair'!" And I just remember that brightening up my entire day.

In Germany we call our renaissance fairs "Mittelaltermärkte" (= medieval markets). Some of those markets were fantasy-medieval-steampunk events in parks, but lots of them actually were held in super old castles, fortresses, and the last one I attended was in an actual medieval former convent / monastery, and lots of people try to dress as authentically accurate as possible. There are BBQs, mead and beer tents, a tight-knit vendor community, show acts, music, and I miss them like a November tree misses its leaves. 😔

I went to one of those fairs in Wittenberg and it was all Renaissance crafts in the park. Tents set up and people in peasant garb cooking over fires, pounding metalcraft, carving wood, making pots, making wine. Interesting, but not fun. Nothing to participate in, and of course, the onlookers were all dressed in modern street clothes.

@@grumpyotter Yes, and they are absolutely amazing. 🥰 The "youngest" authentic castle next to my home town is from around 1760, the oldest castle ruins in our area are from 800 BC and of Celtic origins, but had later been repopulated by the Cattic people, the Germanic tribe that settled here and gave the state of Hesse its name. Also you can find several megalithic structures, like the Wotanstein (Odin's Stone) and the Steinkammergrab ("stone chamber tomb"), that had been built about 4.000 BC. No matter the gender, people deserve to be respected. If once in a while there’s a slip-up, it’s all good, i just think that its sad how many people don’t respect others. @hammertapping Should have used a Bernadette Banner quote from a video that came out this week that references a Shakespeare stage direction? That doesn't make any sense.
@benjaminbrown298
@benjaminbrown298 4 жыл бұрын
@hammertapping I didn't forget what I said. My point is that the quote that OP says "would have been my senior quote" is not, in fact, a Shakespeare quote. It is a quote from the above video which references Shakespeare. The specific phrase "Thought has exited my brain pursued by a bear" is a phrase with its own meaning, with the Shakespeare reference added for flair. So no, what Bernadette added is not superficial, it is the Shakespeare reference that is superficial to the phrase's meaning and is added purely for aesthetic purposes. Thus the desire to use the quote from the video gives no indication of the OP's understanding or misunderstanding of the Shakespeare allusion.

We have these in Germany! They’re usually called “Medieval Fairs” though and that’s also how they’re themed - so you get jousting and dances, but obvs there’s no Queen Elizabeth around 😅 Quite often they also take place in historic old towns or castles! Aside note: What a lovely escape from reality this video provides! How lucky you never put this together until now 😅

People would host dances in their homes, or in community spaces, a live band of around four or five people would play banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and sometimes if we got lucky a stand-up bass. All ages and types of people would come in and dance together. Not only did we breathe each other’s air, WE EMBRACED! @@insulaarachnid I'm sure once the pandemic passes and things go back to normal you could find social events around you as well? For example Halloween, it's not really celebrated here in Germany either, but you can always find at least some Party advertised that welcomes costumes. It might also be a bit awkward but any kind of nerd-ish convention will gladly accept costumes even if they are not related to a specific franchise in my experience? I'm sure Australia has some as well. Also one can always arrange something with friends. I've talked to so many people that have the same sentiment of wanting to dress up but never getting an occasion to do so. It will feel awkward (especially as I'm somewhat socially anxious myself) to invite people over and mention costumes, but usually the inviting them over etc is the biggest hurdle.

@@daviedood2503 hello dave! non-binary is a label you might put on yourself when you don't claim being a part of the gender binary (that being female - male (or anything, really)). different people identify as non-binary in different ways, just in the way that different people identify themselves in the roles of male/female in different ways depending on all kinds of reasons. genderfluid, on the other hand, is where what gender you identify as does not stick to a single label for the rest of time, but simply changes without control. therefore, a genderfluid person might call themselves a man one day, but non-binary a different day, and so on. a non-binary individual might also consider themselves genderfluid, it is all different depending on who you are speaking to since, again, everyone sees their gender in a unique way. it is important to note that i am only a single individual and my view on this matter may differ from other's who are just as informed, but it is important to always be open to new conversations and new aspects of the gender binary (or non-binary)! thank you for asking!

I miss Renaissance Faires so much. In my early 20s I worked at the Faire in San Bernardino, California, and absolutely loved it, even in its cheesiness. At the time it was the closest I could get as an adult to the feeling of immersive wonder I always chased after as a kid, hoping that maybe somehow some portal to a fantastic realm would open for me. Fortunately I later discovered fantasy LARPing and joined one of the best groups in Southern California, where I could experience the closest thing to that I would ever know in this life. The SoCal Faire was often dusty, chilly in the mornings and extremely hot in the midday-afternoon, requiring us food service workers to douse each other with buckets of water in order to keep from fainting from heat exhaustion. But I loved it and came back as a visitor on those weekends when I wasn't needed to work the booth. I don't necessarily miss the high prices - SCA wars had a bit more affordable prices on cool stuff - but the food, the buildings, the performers, and the people who came in costume made it all worthwhile.

The "Yes, I really had to make this sign" KILLED ME I know there are renaissance fairs in germany since friends of mine once invited me before the dreadful quarantine times, and the fact that they have been many times before. I'm not sure just how big or how the mix of historical and fantastical goes about there but this struck some more motivation for asking them again about it once we're all back to roaming the earth freely jajaja Also this feels so much like a lively distant memory. Like a bit of warmth in our isolated times

Yes, they are called medieval markets ( Mittelalter Markt). Usually people in costume get in for a reduced entrance fee. And you'll find people with all kinds of costumes and without.

To add to what lyleea said, one Medieval market that is quite similar to the NY Faire is the Oberurseler Feyerei. It is a bit smaller, but there ar similar events and some amazing little shops where you can spend your money on beautifully hand crafted things. Though this is not exclusive only to the Oberurseler Feyerei. I hope for us all that the coming year we can all visit Medieval markets again, tbh German Medieval market are in my opinion the best and an amazing experience

Reenactor from germany here. There are a lot of historical markets here in germany and in many scandinavian places. But, at least here in germany, there are different kind of markets. We got the MPS, the Mittelalterliches Phantasiespektakulum (medieval fantasy spectacle), the markets and the "Army camps", where mostly fighter meet up (Heerbann, for example). Those two are mostly way more historical accurate than the MPS. It's definitely a bigger thing here and worth a visit!

We have one in Texas. I worked it one summer ... i enjoy the craftsmanship....amazing tradespeople...beautiful ironwork and wood work, I personally loved the theater productions and costumes 🏆! I spent everything i made on very unique Christmas gifts 🎁... 😆 🤣 😂 seriously...i walked around those acres and acres on my lunch hour and bought something every day 😆 🤣 😂 I noticed a large percentage of the population attending ...enjoyed the food and Spirits 🍺 🍻 🍗 🌽 🍟 🍞 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻 the MOST!!! Our fair ...hum age 16 to 30 ...90 percent of the population attending was between ages 16 to 30. I seldom saw children or the elderly ...maybe because of the heat and distance walking...also the language spoken VERY Loudly was not rated G and some of the acting was certainly not rated G.

Should definitely go at least once! The regional faires vary a lot of course, but it is a magical spectacle to behold for a weekend. I don't do well with crowds so I stick to the smaller ones but they still have plenty of food, shops, shoes, and jousts/tournaments to enjoy.

I've been to only one Renn Faire, May 1992, Memorial Day weekend outside of Atlanta. I was visiting friends and they suggested this "fun little thing we go to every year." Oh the joyous memories! Thank you Bernadette!

As someone who discovered Ren Faires in ...1986? I can confidently say that they are what prompted my journey into historical clothing. I spent the next 20+ years slowly and hideously attempting to improve my costuming skills, in an age before internet ans KZfaq. I relied on thrift stores and library books, and eventually came to some very good knowledge. But I cringe at my early years - boho blouses, carpetbagger skirts, fake leather anything, plaid anything. Thanks for the quick nostalgia trip. I didn’t even realize how much I’d missed it this year!

I've been a performer at a renaissance faire, as well as done pre-show entertainment for Shakespeare on the Green, which is 3 weeks in June and July, 4 nights a week where they will perform 2 plays, usually one tragedy and one comedy. And have done so in costume(probably not historically accurate, but I make do with what I've got), which usually means I have at least 3-4 layers of fabric pretty much everywhere. It can be excruciatingly hot, we have often joked about putting ice packs between the chemise and the corset just to keep cool. It is a lot of fun, singing madrigals that are historically accurate, and this was the first time in 6 years that I haven't done Shakespeare on the Green. I remember dreading doing it because it was a lot of work, but once you are out there it makes it totally worth it, and now I really miss it.

If you ever do decide to try ice packs, go look up SCA & Ren Faire solutions. Several of the folks who play in those venues have come up with some quite clever solutions for heat beyond what our Renaissance European ancestors would have known.

If anyone is curious about the man with the fire whips, his name is Aaron Bonk! He performs at a few different Renn Faires every year (when there isn't a plague). I saw him perform in Pennsylvania and he was excellent!

I heard from a friend who used to work at the original faire in CA that it was started by some professors who wanted to recreate the renaissance with historical accuracy. She learned all about how to make her costume accurate and helped me with mine. There’s a documentary called “Faire: An American Renaissance” that talks about the origins. Oh how I missed the faires this year! There’s nothing like it! Can’t wait till we can all go back!! This video made me smile to remember all my own good times at the faire! 🍗🍻🏰⚔️✨

“Remember”? Hell, I used to be performer! Between 1999 and 2001, I worked at Bristol and TRF, invariably playing military characters (don’t ask me me why). I was never in the prettiest costume, but I sure remember what it was to schlep a 14-foot pike! Notably, though, the NY Faire was the first one I *saw*, back in my early teens.
