I'm late to the party, but every year there's an annual super collab playlist in the movie corner of KZfaq, and I'm hopping on too! It's Nando v Movies' new instalment - One Villainous Scene! And with so many prime candidates for villains already taken care of, today we're gonna be essaying it up with a side approach on the prompt. We're talking about the heroic protagonist villain Wreck-It Ralph, and the scene defined as the MOST villainous scene in the series. You know the one. Let's get into it...

Fun fact: Early in production it was considered to keep all characters in their native graphic quality, essentially making Ralph look 8-bit the entire time. However, this was deemed too difficult for making Ralph a sympathetic, lovable character.

@emerald movies and tv they still incorporated the concept brilliantly when every time Ralph or Felix enters a new game whether it's the brooding high definition apocalyptic landscape of heroes duty or the simple quirky fun games of fix it Felix Jr and sugar rush, THEIR graphics change to match up to the game they currently reside in.

Ngl they should have left this franchise alone man. Especially when you compare the Arcade transits scenes from the first movie to the second and you realize how empty the station looks in the second in regards to characters.
@electrobob992
@electrobob992 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Personally I prefer to believe the second movie took place in another Litwicks, where situations happened similarly but not exactly... Like in that one there was NO turbo, like he never existed. Hence why she decided to go turbo, and NO ONE stopped her. She LITERALLY went turbo, and as we all know... Online games player base are much more.. Picky when things seem questionable, and her glitching abilities would come off as hacky. Ergo some fans would report it and the developers would be all: "Wait what character? We never added that character". Followed by them DELETING her code, which the first time.. She would probably be safe, but the next time... The developers would think it's related to that "Ralph" virus, and decide to lock DOWN the game. Since it WAS a online only game, her code would only exist on THEIR servers. Then after locking it down, and transferring the game to a new temporary server. They would load an old BACKUP of the game like MONTHS before she was "added". They would then look into the code on the temp server, just to find out anything they can... Think torturing her code. Meanwhile... Ralph and Friends would end up finding out about her deletion... Ralph would go to investigate, asking those from the game only for them not to recognize ralph or anything. Even Felix's hammer would have no effect. Oh and since everyone at litwicks LOVED her, sugar rush would DIE without their favorite character.

@@electrobob992 _Vanellope of the second movie is the "Turbo". She left his game to stay in another, she even don't care about what Sugar Rush people will do without a ruler, because it's his proposite in the game being the new ruler, like Ralph is the principal thing to make his game work, without Vanellope, i can't see another character being the ruler or some shit, i think being a ruler of Sugar Rush as his work and no one can replace she_

The whole plot of the sequel is garbage in context to the original movie. It's as if the characters all suddenly had amnesia and forgot all the lessons they learned and who they are, what they care about, etc. It comes off as the writers not really caring about the first movie and just writing up a sequel as a cash grab, which honestly is probably what happened.

This scene is very hard to watch, and that's what it's all about The dark and brooding environment, even in a candy-themed game! This...CRUSHED me when I first saw this. At that time, we had no reason to disbelieve King Candy's words, especially because he gave Ralph what he wanted, _before_ telling Ralph the story. Ralph could have said, "thanks" and mush Candy with his free hand--this is his game, as far as we know, and he'll respawn--and wished Vanellope well, but chose to listen to Candy. EDIT: The take on "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses" bit, however, never fails to get me to snort and start chuckling.

Games are made to be played, but I think that everybody wants to make something important with in their lives, and because games take a lot to make I think that game devs want to do more then make the players be happy for a while only to forget about their game entirely, so I'm happy that much of the games today include a story and something to be learned and never to be forget... Just compare any "satisfying" game with one which still holds a place in your heart (by the way you should play Evan's remains)

It is jarring to see Ralph's character painfully downgraded in the sequel. I wish we got at least a degree of self-awareness from him way before the climax that he was starting to go a little too far with holding her back. Thus, his character friendship conflict shifts focus sooner from something that's just selfishly comes from inward into a genuine situational one where he actually acknowledges the cons of her leaving the citizens of Sugar Rush behind unplugged and the risks of living in the Internet. I guess I'd like the film to rather allow Ralph start to go through the steps of letting go a friend much earlier, instead of all this happening only during the resolution. At least this way, as how I see it, prevents Ralph from going down the rabbit hole of becoming a selfish man baby, which is sadly what happened in the film.
@Karumaino
@Karumaino 3 жыл бұрын
@@BuizelCream On the issue of friendship and Ralph opening up and allowing himself to change Vanellope's game, for me it was a contradictory message to the one in the first film, the evils that occur if a character leaves his game have already been established. the clear message that each character is special in a way to make their proper game work. That's what breaks the second movie, Ralph in the first one he sacrificed his friendship with Vanellope to let her "alive" after hearing the fake King Candy story, and after that at the end of the movie he even realizes that he is important to make his game work, just like Felix and all the civilians in the building, in this second, they just force a "forget that "special", Vanellope is an empowered woman and she can do whatever she wants, regardless of the problems that this can generate for your game and all those who are part of it such as runners and extras". That's what destroys the movie, they could easily cut this poorly crafted "follow your dreams" message for the movie and make Vanellope see that even though she's bored with knowing 100% of her racing game, she's still a fundamental piece to his game.

Although, if we take what we can see at face value the events that happened since the resolution of the first film, its credit scene, all the way to the sequel, we can observe these two things: The Arcade games seemed to have adapted pretty well in terms of characters, not only visiting each other off-work, but also cameo-ing one another in each other's games by coming up with "new game mechanics ft. new characters". And the fear of "going Turbo" may have also been vanquished when Turbo himself got destroyed, and the societal norms inside the Arcade started to shift since Ralph's victory. Ever since, characters labeled as "villains" during work are being accepted more in social groups and friendship circles off-game. The community in the Arcade as a whole became a lot more tight-knitted, which allowed the film's fundamental worldbuilding elements to become really malleable. For me, it kind of makes sense, after 6 years leading to the sequel, that the Arcade characters are behaving so relaxed like this. It made it easy for Vanellope to consider leaving her game when her role as princess that tied the Sugar Rush game together seemed to have become even more nonessential. It's why Ralph could easily allow Felix to make impromptu adjustments to their game while he is away in the Internet because they have the whole Arcade to help them out. From one's perspective, these developments looked like it broke the 1st film, but looking at it another way shows things kind of otherwise, at least to me. Which is why my problem with the sequel stems more with the main characters not being properly developed in showing their character arcs, rather than all this.
@Karumaino
@Karumaino 3 жыл бұрын
@@BuizelCream _I understand you, and I completely understand your point of view, but man, for me I can't, and I'm speaking for myself, to see how Vanellope from the first movie suffered just to want to be accepted by the other characters in her game and be able to compete in the racing, so that in the film's sequel the producers simply want to make us think that Vanellope, the character who most wanted to be part of their game and not just be seen as a bug, would turn into a character so cold as to not care what would happen if she left Sugar Rush because according to the second movie "I'm one of the 16 runners, they won't miss me" just shows how the film's directors are hypocritical to the point of contradicting themselves in the messages that the two films show_

@@Karumaino I totally understand how jarring it is. In a way, I do wish we have gotten to see at least a lot more screentime during those 6 years where we get to see Vanellope being happier in Sugar Rush. From what I can see, the daily competition from her peers in that game for 6 years have really gotten into her though ^^; It kind of makes sense she went off to look for a more comradery type of association that's also built in the racing game's function, which Shank and her friends in Slaughter Race can provide her it seems.

I wouldn't call it "Ralph's evilest scene", but definitely an anti-hero scene. He had his reasons for wanting to keep Penelope safe from the publics eyes thinking that it would inevitably shut her game down due to her glitch, even against her wishes. And he did later realize that he shouldn't get in her way of her doing so and with the help of Felix, he did rebuild her cart and somewhat deeply apologize for it. After all, that's what this movie was about. An antagonist needing to play his role as just another "bad guy" wanting to beat the player, but wanting to be something more to his game than just another one sided villain that even after hours gets treated like some sub character not deserving of affection or love in his own game that revolves around him just as much as Fix-it Felix, the player's character and he does what he needs to get those things, even if the actions he's taken (going turbo) was against his own game. (To be fair, the head of the hotel did dare Ralph to get a shiny medal saying hero, so I guess they kinda did ask for it. But that's what they get for neglecting their own game's villain.) So that's why I think it's story of a villain starting a redemption arc into an anti-hero, and becoming a hero to many in the end. Despite the cliche of the "bad guy motto" in this film, Ralph actually embodies it throughout the film. In this scene, the "I'm bad, and that's good. I'll never be good and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be, then me." Is put on full display. TL:DR Ralph is an anti-hero full of purpose, wanting more for both himself and others. He's not just another selfish villain in a hero's story against evil bad guys.

I don't know if I'd call it a redemption arc. He never did anything wrong to begin with that needed redeeming *until* this scene. He's not a villain, he's an actor. He plays the role of a villain but that isn't who he is and he set out to prove it
@jjtheraccoon61

Right. That "selfish villain" role goes to Turbo, who goes to psychopathic extremes to remain the center of attention, like turning Vanellope into a glitch and altering everyone's memories so they can only bully her!

I remember someone comparing this scene to a scene of physical and possibly sexual assault. The way it’s not ‘shown’ the cries for them to stop, the music, it’s honestly one of the most unsettling things Disney has done IMO. I remember sitting in the theatre, just gripping onto the theatre seat handles while this played out. Sure, we all know Disney will give everyone a happy ending, but the scene was just hard to watch.

I genuinely love this movie just for the fact alone that King Candy was not only SMART here but what he said was actually allowed to be _true._ Ralph didn't unnecessarily fell for a lie for cheap drama, King Candy came up to him and told him with pretended sympathy that he as the King is not willing to take the risk of letting her race because not only could it get their game unplugged and leave his people homeless, Vanellope herself would die alongside the game because she's a glitch and can't leave like everyone else. Of course Turbo is at fault for this but the fact remains that the movie pulled through with these established stakes and Vanellope genuinely almost met her end this way while all of Sugar Rush had to flee their game bc it got eaten up by bugs. And she indeed couldn't leave because she's a glitch. King Candy didn't lie and that's surprisingly rare in media.

I just wanted to do something good for a change. Fix something, instead of tearing it down. But I guess that was a fantasy. In reality, I'm Wreck-It Ralph. I break stuff. Ralphs not the villian, The happylander mayor was the villain. Ralphs actually a victim fighting back the only way he can... Wreck-It Ralph is a giant of a man, Nine feet tall with really big hands Living in a stump on his very own land, Until his world went crazy He was minding his own business on the day they came They showed a piece of paper saying "eminent domain" They built an apartment building saying progress was to blame So he got mad, and he turned bad Brick by brick, he’s gonna take his land back! Think about that a second. The Mayor, used Eminent Domain, to evict Ralph, and have a condo built on Ralphs land... THEN as Mayor gets the Penthouse Condo? the most expensive and biggest unit? The amount of government corruption there... AND they didn't even give Ralph fair market value for his land... There was no tax foreclosure, or tax auction, no, this was Eminent domain, they seized his land, didn't compensate him, and then personally profited from said action.

GENUINELY when I saw that scene (in theaters I think?) it actually made my stomach drop a little. It's so emotional. I'm very sensitive and a bit too empathetic sometimes so that's probably a huge part but man. I still remember that feeling. Good movie. It's really really good to me how Ralph actually tried to talk it out beforehand. I'm always so frustrated when conflicts are made or worsened simply because they didn't just talk to one another. Ralph did try, and it wasn't working. He explained how he could, but he also knew and accepted the impact he'd have on Vanellope. He could tell her "this is for your own good" all he wanted, but we and he knew that's what the bad guy always says.

I think about it every now and then how different it would be and more so how extremely sad the whole thing is, if he became a hero through self-sacrifice instead of a stupid gold medal, how the only one that really knew who he was and how he was a real hero, was a small girl of another game instead of the folks of his own game.
