I lived in the same road as Danny as children - what a pretty child he was with everything I would have loved - long blond hair, delicate features - my mum was great friends with his mum. We went to school together and he came to play in my house often - my family loved him.

Such a shame Danny didn't get to see later in life that his music is more loved than ever now.

Danny Kirwan should be as mythical a figure as Nick Drake. Everyone should know him. He was the complete package - guitarist, singer, songwriter par excellence.

Met Danny several times in the 90's. He was staying at a Dry-out house just off Rotherhite New Road S.London. He was friends with a tenant who was also a guitarist. Danny came around the house occasionaly. He came across as a cool slightly nervy but a nice man. Even his casual playing sounded brilliant, a real musician. I got a big smile out of him when l told him 'Jigsaw Puzzle Blues' was my favourite Mac song. RIP Danny

I'm a yank from upstate NY and Danny Kirwan is so vastly underrated it's criminal.His phrasing and vibrato are the things dreams are made of.It's very sad to me that he isn't recognized more...especially in the guitar community.

It's always warms my heart when I'm reminded that there are others who appreciate Danny as much as I do. Most people have never heard of him. He was able to keep the band going after Peter left and still put out a lot of great music. Those two were so good together. What a shame he had his issues (as did Peter, and really Jeremy as well). They were just getting better and better in that short time they were together. There was nothing 'flashy' in his playing, he just knew how to play the right notes. Even just those little vibrato fills he would throw in there were so good.

One of the truly great guitar players ever .Clean alternate picking with Djangoesque style and a massive knowledge of scales coupled with huge vocabulary and feel/ vibrato like no-one else.Genius has it's price. R.I.P. Danny..Too good for this earth.

This was excellent. These were real people. I like how the guest was very sensitive about that and respected Peter and Danny. He knew they had issues but still held them in reverence. There is a great clip on KZfaq which I saw the other day from a French Documentary showing Danny leaving his home and going to practice with Peter Green in an apartment. JOhn Mcvie is sitting on the couch. Danny looked so young and Peter was very vibrant and funny. What they were jamming was unreal. They were special players that is for sure. Sometimes success or fame and money exposes the cracks in someone. They burned bright for the short amount of time they were together.

I am 66 and have been a big fan of the REAL Fleetwood mac since the beginning..i could care less about the Nicks mac..great info...from you guys...we need to get it out that PETER and DANNYwere the best...mac AND guitar Duo ever...

True Legends like Our Greeny and Danny don't boast about their fame ... all they wanted to do was play the music ...Thank you, James for telling everyone about Danny's magical music and voice also . It was his calm singing voice and the FM boys playing in the background that saved me from a knife-wailing maniac in 1978 . Nobody had to convince me since of how phenomenal these guys were !! I only regret not ever being able to thank them personally. It's wonderful to actually hear of people meeting them and giving what I believe are true accounts of it ! And Andrew Dear , you must brush up and listen to more of Danny's music and read Martin Celmens book . He jumps around a bit in it but some 'good to know ' info inside his writing !! I was a toddler in the early Fleetwood Mac days and really only knew the version with Buckingham Nicks. I went back to early Fleetwood Mac out of hearing about Peter Green's death. I feel like I've found buried treasure with Peter's music. I find myself playing alot of Danny Kirwan songs that I'd never heard. Station Man, Woman of a thousand years, Dust, Sands of Time really soothe me. I feel robbed that he's gone. I wish I could have been around to have seen him play.

Danny Kirwin was SO underrated. The song "Dragonfly" from 1971 is just beautiful.

Probably my favorite guitar one-two punch of all time was Peter Green and Danny Kirwan.

Strange I stumbled on this interview today, as this morning I awoke with Kirwan's 'When we are Dust' playing in my head. Even though I haven't heard it for ages and had to remember who it was. That's another poem that Danny set to music, in this case it's the WW1 poet Rupert Brooke. Danny just took a few verses, but the whole poem is also well worth a read. Danny was obviously well read as well as having an eclectic knowledge of music and performers. I was actually born the same year as him 1950, RIP Danny!

I first heard the song Dust the day he died quite an extraordinary event for myself as I’d been making a big deal about the song during the day to my friends and then by the evening I was on my back from the hospital as my mother wasn’t very well and he had passed it was out of this world I was gutted what a legend he is I appreciate your collective knowledge and time you’ve put imo discussing this wonderful artist it’s a travesty the guy isn’t even on Spotify for the new generation to explore his solo work.

Very nice to include Liam, Peter's son, in the conversation. I've followed his Ranier interviews, and he cuts through all the hype quite well. Interesting stuff. Liam is also recognized in the latest edition of the Celmins bio. Very respectful. I hope he and Peter's beloved daughter Rosebud are doing well these days.

What a thoroughly engaging conversation. Just perfect guys, the banter just flowed so naturally it was as though we were there with you. So much to say about Danny and Peter, both such fascinating and elusive personalities. For P Green/early Fleetwood fans, this is a must listen to. Just an aside. As James and Ramon are so well acquainted with the London music scene, did you ever see, or know of the great Steve "White Man" Waller from Camberwell/Brixton? Now passed. Best known around 1970's-80's London, mainly South London. Fabulous showman, guitarist, singer, band leader, heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder, BB King, Reggae, J Beck, Funk, everything. Played for a while with Manfred Man's Earth Band, but was really at home with the public, giging pubs, clubs. He was much loved and admired. Doing a tribute on this great man would be wonderful.

I was a guitar playing teenager in the late sixties early seventies, listening to Fleetwood Mac especially the records with Danny playing guitar. In fact he was a real influence on my developing style. I never knew what happened to him at all. I just remember him for his excellent work, and just today I was playing something from Kiln House. I’m way older than you guys and was just 16 when I started started listening to those guys back in 1970, in Los Angeles where I grew up.

Peter Green saw Danny talent ,that’s go enough.

What is always overlooked when it comes to Danny is that he'd only started playing guitar at the age of 15 and he turned 18 when he joined Fleetwood Mac so from being a complete novice and obscure to being a member of the UK's biggest touring Blues based band occurred within 3 short years. Four years on and at the age of 22 he is fired from the band, must have been such a huge kick in the guts and betrayal.

Nice to see an overlooked guitarist get some attention. He was a great protégée of the incredible Peter Green. 👍 This is a very well produced channel well done Ramon.

Thanks so much for posting this. I'm such a fan of Danny, that when I got a chance to ask Bob Welch a question through the Penguin fan site, I asked him all about working with Danny (that was mean of me - I regret it.) But I did try to compliment how good Bob was with Danny - Bare Trees being the best Fleetwood Mac album - hands down. Clearly Danny was obsessive and a perfectionist. Pair that with substance abuse, and the stress of touring, it's not surprising that he was asked to leave Fleetwood Mac after his rampage. That move hurt them both tremendously. Danny put out 3 great solo albums before leaving music entirely, but he left us with the best guitar playing ever. And I don't want to knock Peter Green because he too was an incredible player, but Danny is clearly responsible for much of the guitar work on Fleetwood Mac albums they both played on. Danny was a much more technical player though, and with his obsessions, he played what you heard on the records. Peter was much more adventurous on stage, so I'm sure it frustrated Danny to have to alter licks when Peter would stray. Danny for sure could hold his own doing that, but it just wasn't who he was musically. On the comment about Danny being too young to be in Fleetwood Mac, I disagree. He was already playing in Boilerhouse - even opening for Peter Green. He tried to find a better band, but couldn't find what he was looking for, so when the offer to join Fleetwood Mac happened, he happily joined. He seemed to really enjoy playing in the studio, and it sounds like the group was incredibly democratic with the songs - Peter certainly wasn't greedy about album space or even lead guitar parts. If his youth played into it, it was only about how that led to his willingness to experiment with drugs (but they all did it) and unfortunately some were affected more heavily than others. I'd love to know more about why Danny regretted that he played the blues. I know he talked about it being an early musical interest of his (prior to his days in the Mac) but he was already feeling that British players shouldn't be purists - but rather use any kind of good music to augment their skills. An underrated legend, indeed.

Hello Gentlemen and thank you. During the last few minutes of this interview you spoke of future topics to discuss. One topic many DK fans would like to know more about is the day Danny blew up backstage. There is very little context fans can grasp their teeth around. We hear bits and pieces, but never get the real story. To state it might have been an issue with tuning between Bob and Danny isn't enough. I find it interesting we've never heard Danny's take on the argument. I get a sneaky suspicion that the band members had more to say, but kept mum on the topic. Speaking of memory loss as you two did, I'm afraid we'll never know. The main combatants are gone. Perhaps there is someone who can shed additional light. We don't even know the concert date and venue when this fateful night occurred. There is an FM boot from 9-2-72 so it's safe to surmise it took place during the first two weeks in September. I'm sure all Danny Kirwan fans like myself would like this topic explored more than it has. Be good.

Very interesting. Where did you find some of the information? For example where do you read about the shotgun in Chicago? (Not because I question what you said but only because I would like to find out too). Where I can find James on social media? (if he had them) Anyway... I have an advice for you Ramon. In my opinion you should let James talk and not interrupt him, that's because he can loose the thread of the speech, if he didn't specified the year you can ask for it when he finish, because it's not essential to understand the story that he was talking. He was saying that Danny arrived to sell practically all his guitars and you asked him the year and he resumed telling the story by skipping that part. Other than that, amazing video! Very interesting chat. Makes me sad what happened to both Peter and Danny. One of my favourite songs on Then Play On is Although The Sun is Shining. That whole album is tinged with a sadness and undercurrent of melancholy but it's such a great album. My dad introduced it to me in 1988, I was listening to Fleetwood Mac when my peers were listening to thrash metal, Guns N Roses, hip hop or house music. That album is very special to me, it's in my CD collection still.

I was at the Guildford 96 show too. Have photos to prove it : ) I found it very emotional. Peter would have only been 50 at the time.

I was a big Bluesbreakers fan, and when the original four-piece Fleetwood Mac launched I considered them to be just another hackneyed blues band, with their debut 'dust bin' cover album leaving me quite unimpressed (remember, Cream, Hendrix, the Small Faces and so many other great, more inventive bands were happening at the time). It wasn't until Danny Kirwan joined that I really took note. Indeed, him joining not only added a relatively bright and lively new sonic dynamic of the band - he was a wickedly good and tasty guitarist and had a wonderful singing voice as well as some great tunes - but his presence seemed to kick Peter Green's efforts up a couple notches, resulting in the likes of 'The Green Manalishi' and 'Oh Well', which suggested a redefining of the blues...a sort of Fleetwood Mac blues genre all its own. Danny's 'Coming Your Way', with its heavy metal-like riff ending is another example of just how powerful that lineup could be when it jumped onto a great riff. Then there would be 'Although The Sun is Shining' or 'Show Biz Blues' to bring us back down to the pastoral beauty and the blues with feeling modes of that highly musical unit. And though nobody ever seems to mention it, the Mac with Danny were one of the first bands to have dual lead players. (Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page did it momentarily in the Yardbirds a couple years earlier and the Allman Brothers, who emerged around the time of the Danny/Peter union, took it to a higher harmonic level, as evidenced on their live 'At Fillmore East'.) Danny's melodic music coupled with his blonde schoolboy looks also added some sense of youthfulness to a band which otherwise looked like a rather threatening bunch or geezers whose shaggy looks and bristling beards made them look twice their age. With due respect to all the other lineups - and the one with Buckingham/Nicks was exceptionally fine and I loved the band when Danny and Christine McVie were the musical dominants - the five-piece that resulted with the addition of Danny Kirwan is the one that defined the Fleetwood Mac legacy. Also, with mention of the impersonators of Green and Jeremy Spencer: In America in 1974 there was a bogus Fleetwood Mac fielded by band manager Clifford Davis after the Mac took an unplanned break at the start of a tour due to Mick Fleetwood's discovery that singer/guitarist Bob Weston was having an affair with his wife, Jenny Boyd (Pattie's sister). Davis claimed to own the name and thus could determine the members. But the promoters and audiences immediately rejected the idea, as did the real Mac. That bogus band included bassist Paul Martinez, who was later in Robert Plant's early solo band and on his first few albums. Elmer Gantry, who later did some tracks with the Alan Parsons Project, Cozy Powell, and Jon Lord was on vocals. He'd previously had the band Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, which included John Ford, Richard Hudson, later of the Strawbs and who had hits as Hudson-Ford. Like Fleetwood Mac itself, the bogus band proved to have its own history.

I can't imagine the pressure Danny must have been under. Any other band would have disintegrated once your founder and lead guitar quits. Danny stepped right up to the plate and especially for being so young, is really responsible for there still being a Fleetwood Mac. I read somewhere that Danny, being so young, was not even allowed in the hotel bars with the rest of the band when they toured. They would buy him a case of beer and he would be stuck in the hotel room watching TV.

the egg and potato guys name was "Harper" as I recall, one of my singers said she had met Peter Green and he wanted to sing with her, I went to the rehearsal and was told I can't mention Fleetwood Mac or ask questions about them, I spoke to the guy for a moment, later he sang / played guitar and had a good voice but 20 years on no one knew what Peter sounded like, his crowd claimed that Eric Clapton and Stan Webb had been to the farm and jammed with him, I was not convinced, a month later he was in the paper as a fraud, I still have the clipping somewhere from the early 1990s ( I still have the single in the skies)

Great stories guys, it's hard when you meet one of your heroes, all of a sudden you freeze up and forget what you want to say. I was lucky enough to meet Peter after a splinter group show and he signed a cd for me. He didn't have much to say, Nigel did most of the talking. As for Munich the whole band was at the party as they have talked about it in several interviews. I do believe that Peter and Danny were damaged a bit that night but they also had other issues so everything can't be blamed on that night.

Are you guys familiar with the FM album kiln house. It's quite different from anything they had done before or since. It was imeaditly after peter greens departure. It's my favorite album of all time probably because of the great time in my life when I discovered it in the summer of 1972 . I listened to it on a trip to alaska from seattle on a tugboat. Sounds like Danny's broken arm probably happened in an alcoholic blackout since he couldn't remember how it happened. I'm a ex alcoholic my self and had several injuries that were a mystery to me. What I heard about the interview for burnings book is that danny just said sorry bob I can't help you. To much stress. John lennon said in an interview that americans love affair with guns scared him. He said they walk around with guns like it's an extension of their arms. Sorry for being so long winded guys. I typed this before I finished watching. Hence the commet about burnings interview.

Interesting chat. I looked up that Peter Green tribute concert, it was certainly emotional seeing Jeremy Spencer with the group. That probably was the highlight of the show, and there were a lot of great performances. Glad he managed to look after himself, the voice hasn't changed a bit.

Jeremy Spencer did say Kirwan was at the Munich debacle, that he had played there in the basement at the mansion.

Peter green always looks tall to me in pics because jeremy spencer is 5'3 and peter in pictures seems quite abit taller than jeremy love the early fleetwood mac i would have loved to have seen them in the 60s R.I.P to danny and peter awesome musicians.

1. Bob Welch remembered much during that time period, but when pressed about the nature of the argument, he claims he couldn't remember during a Penquin interview. However, he does proudly remember pressing Mick to get rid of Danny shortly after joining the band. He stated Kirwan was messing with everyone's head. I can't speak for anyone else, but this bit of news was upsetting to hear. We're talking about a newcomer to the band who quickly became tight with Mick and was already conspiring against Danny. 2. John McVie in a Penguin interview stated it was a gig in San Diego where Danny refused to go on stage. This information is hard to believe because the band was playing along the eastern section of the US during the month of Sept. in 1972. Perhaps the list of concerts provided on the web during that time period are wrong.

Man ..... if you sit next to Danny Kirwan on a bench .. you have many kind of ways to ask him questions, on a very relax way, just sit next to him not stare in his eyes just chillin and ask questions . I think James downplays the life-wrecking power of LSD here. Peter was obviously a casualty of that. Quite a coincidence that Danny went the same way at the same time, no? Nobody loses it like that over gunshots etc. Just sayin'.

If you listen carefully to the interview of Liam's son with the German man '? Rainier' who hosted Peter Green at the 'Munich party event', he says that, 'as far as he knows' only the roadie and Peter from the band were there. But to me it seems highly possible that the other Fleetwood Mac members, who claimed they were at the party, were, in fact, there, but simply remained unnoticed by Rainier, perhaps due to being on another floor of the buiding.
