Country's Family Reunion

Country's Family Reunion

16 күн бұрын

The Oak Ridge Boys, formed in the 1940s and adopting their iconic name in the mid-1960s, initially gained recognition as a gospel group. It wasn't until Joe Bonsall joined in 1973 that their trajectory shifted towards mainstream success. Johnny Cash's support helped them secure a deal with Columbia Records, but it was their move to Dot/ABC and the 1977 hit "Y'all Come Back Saloon" that catapulted them into country music stardom. Throughout the late '70s and '80s, they amassed a string of chart-toppers including "Trying to Love Two Women," "I'll Be True to You," and "(I'm Settin') Fancy Free," solidifying their status as a fixture in country music.
Their influence extended beyond music, notably collaborating with Paul Simon on "Slip Slidin' Away." Despite their last No. 1 country hit in 1989 with "No Matter How High," the Oak Ridge Boys continued as a beloved touring act, maintaining a presence in country awards and special events. Joe Bonsall, a prolific writer with several books to his name, faced health challenges over the years, including a near-fatal battle with pulmonary embolisms in 2022. Despite his health setbacks, Bonsall remained dedicated to his music until his retirement in 2024, passing away as a cherished figure in both country music history and the hearts of his family and fans.

Joe Bonsall(1948-2024) sang tenor for the Oak Ridge Boys from 1974 until his retirement in January 2024. His career in both country and gospel music spanned more than 50 years. Another golden voice that has joined Heavens choir. Brother Joe will be greatly missed by many. He has been joyfully reunited with many friends such as Calvin Newton, George Jones, Harold Reid, Brock and Faye Speer, Dr. Ben Speer, Tammy Wynette, Dr. Howard and Mrs. Vestal Goodman and many others who have passed on before. My prayers and condolences to the Bonsall family and also the Golden, Allen and Sherban families all who have lost a beloved father, grandfather, friend and colleague.

Oh no….The Oak Ridge Boys will never be the same without Joe Bonsall. I saw him in concert had front row seat. He came up to me and shook my hand several times along with the other members. He was such a nice man the whole group was and they played their number one hit songs! They ended the concert singing “Elvira.” In fact we were the last ones out because we were so close to the stage I was able to set my phone up on the stage while I was dancing and swaying back & forth to their music! They came out after the concert & talked to us the lead singer to Exile who is best know for the hit song "I Want To Kiss You All Over" is married to the lead singer of The Oak Ridge Boys so we also got their autograph! I was so close I got great pictures too! What a great loss to Classic Country Music. It seems like we are losing all the Great Ones. Awe....now this really makes me cry as it was stated about Joe Bonsall "But JESUS and his family always came first-and we will see him again on the Promised Day.” Believe me I saw him in concert up close you could "see" Jesus in him! You really could! See you later Joe on the other side where you are now with Jesus.

Grew up listening to the Oak Ridge Boys and proudly do a few of their songs in my shows now. I was privileged to be able to listen to them while they were just beginning their country music success. I was 12 when "Y'all Come Back Saloon" first came out and I've been a huge fan ever since then. I was struck with sadness and "Oh NO!" when i heard that Joe had passed away. If you grew up in the 70's and 80's then you lived in a time when country music was at its very best! We had groups like Alabama, Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers. Its rare now to see country quartet's like them any more. And sadly, he passed away on my birthday. July 9 2024 Thank you Joe!! Rest in Peace 🙏

RIP Joe Bonsall. I was fortunate to have front row seats at a concert a few years ago and his on stage energy transmitted to the audience in a way that it always stays with you! Each year tge Cheryl Lyn Welter Charitable Foundation which we founded in memory of our daughter with a mission of changing the lives of underprivileged kids in rural schools holds a day long RadioThon as our main fundraising effort. The song we use throughout the day as a reminder to our listeners of the importance of giving is the Oaks “Did I make a difference?” The song has made a difference in our efforts to help kids, so it’s with confidence that I can say RIP JOE BONSALL…You indeed made a difference!

Joe Bonsall, RIP. God bless his memory and the remainder of the Mighty Oaks. I am a rock and roll fan but love old country and gospel. I have seen the Oak Ridge Boys more than any other group over the 60+ years of my life. I watch these memorials with a tear or two in my eyes.

@@brucejones1867 Sad to see our favorite ones go. Even if it not our top favorite type of music. I understand that completely. But they still are no#1 in every choice of other types of music. If that is not a gifted singer. I do not know what one is. Thank you for being so sweet & nice.

I want to say thank you to Larrys Country Diner for posting these videos for us all to enjoy this week as we mourn the loss of a true Brother in Christ. But i want to say that the OAK RIDGE BOYS as a whole have been a true gift from GOD all these 50 years, and of course going back even further than that. But THESE 4---Joe, Duane, William Lee, and Richard are 4 of the finest men GOD ever blessed us with. They have touched generations of fans with their music and their musical talent is to be in awe of, but their generosity and the love and good-heartedness that they have shown to so many people in their lives says everything about the class of people they are--they stand the test of time forever as men and as performers--they changed country music forever. I shared my more detailed personal story about my life with the OAKS on the first video posted from Larrys Country Diner this week after Joe's death, which i wont go into again here, but for me personally, Joe's passing was almost along the lines of losing a family member. They became almost like family to me and my grandparents, as my grandparents had us in their fan club from the time i was 2 yrs old--so thru the entire 80s and early 90s, we spent a lifetime with these guys--they are a part of some of my best personal childhood memories. Thanks to my grandparents, i got to travel around several diffeerent cities and see these guys perform when they were in their prime. I have been a die-hard lover and student of music all my life, and i have always said the OAK RIDGE BOYS were the most underrated and unappreciated band/group in music history, regardless of genre. And its because their music could have crossed over so many genres: gospel, country, rock, pop, even R&B, to an extent. Their live shows in the early to mid 80s were something very special, very uplifting, their performances made u feel like your spirit had been moved and your soul had been lifted. There was that side to them as performers, then there was their own personal side as men. Both were to be loved and cherished! As a music lover, if u go back through and look at their entire catalog of music, its unbelievable the amount of material they put out, and such quality music with a quality band. But their entire catalog is so impressive, and theyre also one of the longest-tenured bands of all-time as well. One thing about the OAKS--so many casual music fans know them as "the Elvira" group. Us die-hard OAKS fans know that they are about alot more than just that song. If i could pick just one song of all of them to best illustrate and capture who the OAKS are as a musical entity, i would pick Y'all Come Back Saloon. That song is what the OAKS are all about--point blank. If i could pick one song as my personal tribute and personal goodbye to Joe Bonsall, well this is for you, my friend: "Oh, you're always in my heart And you're often on my mind I will never let it die Just as long as I'm alive Sometimes it makes me sad That we never said goodbye Well i guess it never hurts To hurt sometime" Love you, Joe B! I miss you, my friend, and i know that GOD is showering you with many blessings up in heaven as we speak!

I've never been one to give anymore thought to the passing of an entertainer 0r celebrity than I would an ever day working man or woman. To learn of the passing of Joe Bonsall makes me truly sad. Some years ago, I read his book, "G.I. Joe and Lilli". That book touched me on numerous levels. I felt compelled to write him, after finally finding his email address, just to let him know how much I enjoyed the book, and how it touched me. I figured that would be it, since I had absolutely no expectation of receiving a reply. But I did. Just a few days following my email to him. It wasn't the generic, "thanks, glad you enjoyed the book". His reply was lengthy, sincere, humorous, and heart felt. He closed by saying, "take it easy man, Joe". I printed it, and still have it. I believe we, his fans, lost so much more than just another entertainer. RIP Joe. Now you join G.I. Joe and Lilli.
