With the reveal of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it's FINALLY time to go back to some of my favorite BioWare games. Dragon Age Origins stands as one of my favorite RPGs ever while Dragon Age 2 is something I find to be insanely overlooked. Inquisition? Well, it was tough to love, but I've come around. So, what makes all these games special? Let's find out.

Dragon Age 2 did not come out in 2012. It came out in March 2011, just 16 months after Dragon Age: Origins, which is pretty crazy to think about and explains why the scope was so scaled back and why it takes place in one city.

Nah, they wanted to make this in one city from the beginning. If DA:O wanted to brong back adventure vibes of BG1 than DA2 wanted to recreate Amn from BG2. I remember when someone asked them "why one city and how this suppose to work" question they bring back BG2 argument.

Eh, it's probably bioware fighting EA and trying to get what they can the entire time such as the development issues for everything after origins when EA took over and based on what devs have said after the fact it seems like they've had to fight for every inch for anything dragon age related. Well that and old devs being shuffled in and out probably doesn't help same with the engine changes.

One thing that got me hooked were the dragon age books. Reading about Maric and Logaihn and realizing Logaihn isn’t just a power hungry evil person. He thought the king was giving Ferelden back to Orlais. He didn’t believe in the blight threat and thought Orlais was more dangerous. The complexity of each character from the expanded dragon age lore. Like reading a book with Duncan as the main character. Amazing.

Matty, if you're going to play a full playthrough of DA:O, including Awakening... I implore you to play as a Dual Wield Warrior, with at least 36 points in Dex so you can DW full size weapons... There are a couple of extremely powerful longswords (Vigilance and Dumat's Spine) you can get your hands on in Awakening and I tend to average doing between 40-50% of all party damage across the playthrough, especially in the base game. I do enough DPS to draw the aggro and I'm tanky enough to handle it. My typical party is myself, Leliana, Morrigan and Alistair to be the tank protecting Morrigan and Leliana while I'm tearing through the enemy ranks in a frontal assault. In Awakening my party is usually Justice, Nathaniel (specced for archery) and Anders. Only Nathaniel comes close to rivalling me in damage. I didn't mention the various powerful longswords that can be obtained in the base game, as I know you're well aware of those, being a veteran.

I'm replaying Inquisition (I played 1&2 recently), and Solas said something that really encapsulates my love for the series. He mentioned how (while in the fade) things play out differently depending on who's experiencing it. Was Loghain a hero who did right by his men, or was he a sneering villain? Both are true, and the contrasts you can have in each playthrough are the main things I want to see with the new game.

Unlike many other people I LOVED Dragon Age 2. And I started with Origins, yes the reused dungeons was off putting but I loved most of the characters and the pure animosity and tension that was constant in the city. This is my favorite game franchise and I love every entry, the rich roleplay in Origins, the incredible lift in art style and astonishing interpersonal relationship development and plot writing in DA2 and the grand scale of conflict and sense of power given in DAI and now what seems to be an amazing graphical, cinematographic, and gameplay experience (hopefully in plot as well, it seems that way thankfully) in DATV that offers what seem to be cool looking companions that are thankfully not just shoehorned old characters from previous games, but instead new people with their hopefully amazing unique stories to tell, and I hope to see comebacks from previous characters, but I am glad to see it will be as characters you meet and help/be helped by, also very happy for Harding for getting the spotlight she deserves. Harding is badass. Lastly, I will say, Inon Zur is the best composer, Trevor Morris did an excellent job, my preference is just the DAO and DA2 style in music.

In terms of replaying, yes to me da2 is the best too. Dao and dai have way, way, way to much "walking simulator" gameplay. Even trying to rush through gameplay for the story is a slog. And dao had some ridiculously long quests areas, eg the fade one. It is one of my hopes for veilguard, that its like me2 - which is also my favourite me game to replay of the me series, because of that minimal walking aspect. I have watched some gameplay videos and lore videos about them though. My biggest issue with Da2 and DaI, is that you don't need to be there. In both of these games, the major plot twisting event that leads to the end, is taken from you and your group. That decision is made for you. Which tells me my story doesn't matter, only theirs does.

I loved the more personally story of Hawke and their companions and even the side characters, it was so refreshing to have a story where you are just trying to survive and become something and make it rich to improve the lives of you your family and friends instead of the cliche that is oh you are the chosen one you are gonna save the world, it's such a old and boring plot those are.

That was the interesting thing about Hawke, is he/she was just a person. The warden was a warden, the inquisitor had a magic mark on their hand but hawke was just a person. That being said, I do think some of the critiques are very valid

I’m so glad that Dragon Age 2 is finally getting the flowers it deserves. It has it flaws but it’s so important to the overall story the games BioWare is making with the series. DA2 is not only sets up some very important events that play a role games after it came out but they were also able to make such a intimate story. I cried when DAO finished because I sad that the story was finish but I cried in DA2 because of the tragedy that you played with Hawke. Hawke loses so much along the way and gets keeps fighting. Also for me DA2 combat is so much fun, I loved DAO but DA2 was for me personally is so much fun as it fast paced but you still have to be smart about how you address situations. Like you said that in the video, the Dragon Age series would really do well with a Legendary treatment because while yes the games have individual stories they all correlate and make such a deep story. Streamlining the ability to play all the games would really be a game changer for both newer players and old time player.

@@aquapendulum that’s totally understandable but in retrospect. They had 6 years to develop origins versus 16 months at most for 2. They still managed to give us a 26/50ish (story/completed) hour game. I hate that EA rushed them because we don’t really know what we could have had but for the cards they were dealt I think they played them well and delivered an excellent game.

Dragon Age: Origins and its expansion Awakening were amazing, I would love to have a remake with updated graphics someday. It doesn't even bother me that your character is silent and it's definitely the dragon age game I've replayed the most and in my top 2. From the characters, to the scary enemies and levels (looking at you Fade - Lost in Dreams and Deeproads quests), soundtrack, companion banter, narrative quality and choices, and the ending credits song by 30 Seconds to Mars (lmao). There are very few times where I've cried after completing a game but it was such an emotional journey and story. Yes the combat left much to desired, but it was out weighed by everything else. It's been fifteen years and I'll still never forget, "Have you ever licked a lamp-post in winter?" 😂💀

I agree with you Dragon Age should get the same treatment Mass Effect Legendary Edition got. I played the hell out of DA1 on PC, skipped two, and I thought Inquision was pretty fun but like you said had way too much meaningless side quests. I was also not very keen on how you port your decisions from 1 and 2 over into Inquision either though. Having to use EA's site etc. I mean what happens when they stop hosting it or you forget your account details? Does your dragon age saga get retconned? They could of easily done what they did with ps3 copies of Mass effect 2 with a little comic section at the start to let you input what decisions you made. (I was happy they still had that included in Legendary Edition.)

2 and Inquisition used to feel so disappointing to me at the time they released since I loved Origins so much, but after ten years without a game I came to really appreciate them for what they were. I just love the world and the characters, the way time passes throughout the games, and how most players have different experiences throughout the trilogy. Its a special, flawed franchise that I'll love no matter what because without Origins I never would've gotten so heavily into the fantasy genre at all.

DA:Origins needs a "Legendary" type remaster. Or remake in the latest Unreal, I would play that. I am holding back my judgement of the new upcoming game until there is actual player reviews out there, from actual post launch gaming. Not just people that tested it, but , I want to hear from people that played through it. Plus, I don't mind waiting for patches and mods. DA:Origins is so far back in my rear view mirror that playing a remaster will be a fresh experience. DA2 was cut and paste after cut and paste locations. DA:I was a whole lot of walking and figuring routes, and fetch quests. Some RPG players like a whole lot of spell and weapon crafting, not me. I like RPGs for the drama, relationships, the action. The less I time I spend in the menu system the better. Mass Effect was my first RPG. and I bought it because, it seemed like a space shooter like Halo. But, it turned out to be so, so much more.

When map of the city was shown in video, I've catched a vibe of that time, truly, no other game brought so much joy to me ever. Its characters are so interesting, its plot is so good and unpredictable, man. I tried the DA:O and I liked it as well, great game. It is just very different. I will accept that DA2 has a good story alongside fun stuff, but the reason it gets so much smack is because of all the small things that pile up. No game ever gets outside of the snowball effect and I don't think it has to be pushed aside. I do like it, I think fence sitting in gaming should be more acceptable because this is one of those games where both sides make a lot of sense and it's best to understand why both sides are so vocal. I'm glad they exist and I'm glad we experienced them, I hope one day we can all get a Dragon Age game in the next decade after Veilgaurd that sees great improvement and I'm interested in seeing how Veilgaurd goes.
