I've actually become a fan of the Beast Machines show over the years, but I agree, there seem to be a lot of missteps even when we separate external factors from the show, like how revising the character models meant the first wave of Beast Machines toys only kind-of looked like their onscreen counterparts. Also missed opportunities, where I am like "You have X and Y in the show, why didn't you just include Z? Of course, I'm not TJ, so I doubt anyone wants to hear my thoughts on it... but I'm gonna share them anyway. Feel free to stop reading if it bothers ya. ;) *Yes, I **_will_** be going full fanboy for large sections of this. XP* 1) Season 2 has more time and budget; maybe some events from it become part of a Season 3. 2) Related to #1, more Strika and Obsidian! 3) Also related to#1, Megatron's new body at the end is *not* based on Optimal Optimus, but Fortress Maximus. 3) Better Maximal designs or general aesthetic. *Not* changing the overall art style, just them. XP 4) Rattrap's Beast Mode is actually his primary mode: his alt mode is now a dragster based on his Transmetal form's third mode. 5) Vehicon drones can combine with their respective Vehicon general (see Energon Combiners). 6) No Botanica, but yes to a triffid or other plant-based Transformer. Yeah, many of these require some explaining, so for the morbidly curious, I will: For as long and drawn out as Beast Machines can be, Season 2 actually felt rushed. My understanding is that, IRL, there were budget and/or time issues, and I believe Beast Wars also suffered from those. It would be great if a few more of the toy-only characters had made it into the show, but even apart from that, a little more time to flesh out *all* the characters was needed. In hindsight, I wonder if it wasn't so much that the show was too slow, but that it had pacing issues in general that made it feel like it was slow when there wasn't major plot progression, *but also* that it was moving too fast when there was. I don't remember if it was right away, but I know at some point I became a big fan of Strika and Obsidian. Both as individuals, and as a couple! Unfortunately, we weren't given enough time with them. My third point seems like it comes out of nowhere, and it does *unless you know the RiD2001 toyline.* There is a toy in that line known as Megatron Megabolt. It was apparently a canceled Beast Machines toy, as the alternate mode very much looks like the floating Megatron head/ship from Beast Machines Season 2, but with tank treads and spiderlegs (yeah, both). There were two repaints also available: Megabolt in 2003 and Megatron (Megahead) in 2005. As for Fortress Maximus, I didn't just mention him because he shows up in RiD2001; *you can take the Megatron Megabolt toy and use it as an alternate head for Fortress Maximus!* It isn't an accident, either; while you do have to pop off the spider-legs, the toys hands are shaped _just right_ to slot into some gaps around a transformation joint near Fort Max's "neck", and the tank treads are just the right size to sit in the gap from the Headmaster. It is still possible the toy was designed with this in mind but there was no plans for Fort Max in the show... but think of how epic it would have been for a giant Optimus Primal to square off against Megatron riding atop a recreated Fort Max body! They could have even repurposed Diagnostic Drone as a personality for the Headmaster bits of Fort Max... Oh, and we also got an oversize Optimus Primal in RiD2001's toyline. Another clear holdover from Beast Machines, but it was a great toy and sized just right to square off against Fort Max. :D I got used to the art style of Beast Machines, and now I even kind of like it... but the Maximals are still mostly ugly as sin. I am *not* saying to avoid the technoorganic look; I am saying to polish it a lot more, especially in robot mode. Rattrap warrants extra attention; I'm not exactly sure why they wanted his bot mode to have wheels, but years later I realized that Beast Mode Rattrap can do just about everything in his rat-based alternate mode that a normal Cybertronian could. I can't remember if he could jack-into computers in Beast Mode or not, but I also never liked how that was just something Rattrap could do. It feels like artificially slapping a "power" onto him to offset all the other stuff he didn't get. We see him even building weapons and tools in his Beast Mode, ones he (and sometimes the other Maximals) can use in Beast Mode. So... why not let him really represent rebalancing the techno and the organic by making his Beast Mode actually his *primary* mode? As a natural extension of realizing this, and building more of his own gadgets (and a few weapons), he now naturally becomes powerful because he can fight like a Beast or a Bot while in Beast Mode. Then, to preserve the wheel-motif, let his alternate mode be a vehicle mode. A more vehicle-like version of his Transmetal form's third mode. Oh, and if Rattrap just building a "gun" feels wrong for Beast Machines... how about he develops rat-like drone versions of himself and those are what turn into his tools (and maybe one into a gun?). Yeah, yeah, *I'm in total fanboy mode,* so if it sounds stupid, it probably is. XD Having the Vehicons double as Combiners is *literally* another fanboy moment; I once wrote a fanfic trying to add more to the Unicron Trilogy setting. Things like adding Stunticons to Velocitron. I wanted to restrict myself to existing mode _a la_ FunPub's offerings, and it occurred to me the Combiner characters from Transformers: Energon had a decent Vehicon vibe to them. Which got me thinking "Wait, why *wouldn't* Megatron have added such a feature to his drones? Imagine the Maximals doing their normal thing, swatting drones left and right. Frustrating even the Vehicon generals. Now imagine Jetstorm flying in formation with his drones only to combine into "Jetstorm Maximus". Even after the Maximals get their bearings and smash up the Combiner's arm and leg... suddenly two more drones fly in to replace the damaged ones, and Jetstorm Maximus is ready to roll again! Oh, c'mon, we're almost done by now. I may be in the minority for not liking Botanica, but I believe the show gave me good reason to. I confess, at first I just thought having plant-based Transformers was silly, but I eventually came around to it. I still don't care much for Botanica. Given how the character was written (including a pacifist streak), having her quickly master the art of transforming *and* then have loads of powers (including offensive ones) *plus* she was the only one who understood that not all forms of light are the same when it comes to raising plants... yeah, I believe she's at least a little bit of a Mary Sue. It isn't that she has any one of these traits, but that she has so many of them. There's one more that might seem silly, but remember when the show aired: Botanica sounded an awful lot like a television "psychic" who went by the name of Miss Cleo. Okay, you made it through this mess. Good job, and may Primus have mercy on your Spark.

While it should have been that first one, it was probably more the latter two. XD My more general things I wanted to fix included enough (or at least more) time and budget for the show, as well as a better Maximal aesthetic, which _should_ have really helped those two as much, if not more, than the rest of the Maximals. I just hated how Silverbolt got shafted in terms of his new beast mode (and maybe even bot mode). I mean, his Jetstorm shtick was so much fun!
