A walk through of the first classic novel I read as a child: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Educator Classic Library was a series of illustrated hardcover editions sold through retail outlets like supermarkets and discount department stores. Cover art by Don Irwin. Published by Classic Press, Santa Rosa, California. Executive editor of the series was Nick Oddo.

Gosh what a great series for kids. Treasure Island was probably my first real introduction to reading when I was a kid too. I loved this book and still do, it has a lot of fond memories for me :)

I do not remember those in my library when I was a kid. Maybe if I'd seen them they might have made me a book reader earlier. I came late to appreciating Stevenson. It wasn't until I read Nabokov and Borges who admired the man that I gave him a chance. Glad I did. He has a wonderfully strange story called "The Suicide Club." I might revisit it soon.

I have the complete set of the Educators Classic Library. My mother would buy them at the grocery store. We also got the Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia that way and I took those to college with me. Wish grocery stores still did that

That's tremendous! I don't have them all, but I've been able to collect most of them over the years. I hope to feature more titles soon. I used to love those grocery store promotions. Miss them too!

Why have I never read this? My first classic was a Great Illustrated copy of Oliver Twist, and I adored it! I gobbled up David Cooperfield afterward and then Little Women. This is a very nice edition. I can imagine the nostalgia you experienced finding it.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, I felt very nostalgic about it. I've gathered up a nearly complete set of these editions, and I'll be reading the titles I didn't get to as a kid!

Never had those when I was a kid but we bought them for our daughters. I did have most but not all of the Illustrated Junior Library classics but a good chunk of those were lost when my parents divorced as well as some of the Whitman Classics which were pretty cheap. I still have some of those but I have to be careful with them because they weren't very well made

I have all the numbered volumes (there are other volumes that aren't numbered). My parents got them at the grocery store but they were lost, along with a lot of other books, when they divorced in the 80s but I found the set again on ebay as I am trying to rebuild the library I grew up with. As for them being unabridged that's not quite true, A Study in Scarlett by AC Doyle had just about all the stuff about Mormons cut. Personally I think it actually made the story better

Hi, thanks for the comment and clarification about abridgement. I need to do a video about the next book in my collection, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I have most of the numbered volumes and a few of the others.
