So many linguists on this thread! Thanks for the helpful video. There are so many varia les that come into play. Barrel length is a big one in my opinion. Copper vs lead, scope vs iron, choke vs no choke, not to mention all the different brands of ammo. The point is to test and find the right combo.

I had both 12 and 20 ga Remington 870's with rifled barrels and open sights. I tested (at great expense) every sabot slug known to man and found the Lightfield was hands-down the best in both guns. I eventually sold off the 12 and now hunt exclusively with the 20. It's become my favorite deer gun as it's light and easy to carry, dependable, and kills deer just as good as any 12 I've ever used. I employ a shooting stick, and with a good rest and comfortable stance, I don't even think twice at shooting standing deer at 100 yards. The farthest deer I've shot with that combination was 147 measured yards. Unfortunately, Lightfield no longer produces ammunition and I only have a few boxes left. Makes me sad!

@@pacifist_productionsMy pleasure. I was toting an H&R 12g slug gun for a few years, rifled barrel, it worked those Hornady sabots like a dialed in rifle. An amazing blind or stand gun, but heavy as a dickens. My father gifted me a Sxs 16g. Once I figured out the right load for the Lyman style slugs I cast for it, the beast is mine up to 75yds. The 75yd limit is imposed upon me due to eyesight limitations and open sights. I picked up an 870 last year from one of the fellows in my group. Such an adaptable firearm for very little money extra. You can pack a pump with extra barrels in your pack and be ready for just about anything. I prefer the balance of a SxS and the broad reference plain it provides. Do you find the pump and semis tend to be top heavy? Especially with magazine limitations, 2 in the tube and 1 in the chamber around here. Anyways. Take care and stay well.

I have shot 2 deers through the heart , dead in its tracks 80 yards, and 124 yards using sabot slugs 3” 375 grain . They’re deadly and worth every penny spent on . Try different shells to find the right one which your gun shoots accurately. Yes it could get expensive at the range, but you won’t regret it when you have to take a deer out to pass 100 yards.

I also have an Ithaca Deer Slayer 12 gauge that shoots and groups cheap Remington Slugger shells well.

I have an 870 w/slug barrel, but my deer gun is a Mossberg 500 w/24" rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount. I set up an identical gun for my son-in-law. We use only Hornady SST sabot slugs w/scopes zeroed @ 125 yards. 3" groups are common. 1st time out my SIL got a 1 shot kill on a doe - heart shot @ 157 yards. He's shot several others from 50 yards to 175. My experience differs 'cuz of my hunting site. Mine have all been 7 to 15 yards. The SST sabots are expensive, but very reliable. I also have a scoped Savage bolt gun w/24" rifled barrel that gives similar results.

I used rifled slugs for years, if it's what you're comfortable with absolutely use it. Switched to sabots 3 years ago open sights for the first 2 and managed a 75 yard shot (gut and I felt horrible, but that happens) and a 40 (killzone in the chest) with 2 3/4 remington copper core sabots. Adding a scope made a big difference for me this year, 110 yard sabot shot with the new winchester 3inch mag sabots, perfectly in the killzone. All the distances where confirmed using a laser range finder, but at the end of the day would love to be lawfully allowed to use a rifle (not a 450 bushmaster or 350 legend)and keep the shotty for bird and clay shooting. Good video man.

I would recommend a muzzleloader over a slug gun when shooting at live animals, my cva accura will honestly shoot as well as my .308 out to 100 yards, 5 shots just one slightly enlarged hole. my shotguns with slugs are lucky to get 3-4" groups at 100... everythings off a bench when checking for accuracy.

I think your 100 yard groups would be tighter with a scope. I'm late here, but the 870 and Mossberg 500 both are not drilled and tapped for sights on the receiver. My Mossbarg 930 semi-auto is. From the pictures of the new models, it looks like the Remington V3 might be drilled and tapped. On my 870 20 gauge Skeet Gun ( old, old model) I mounted a scope with a mount that sits only on the left side of the receiver. Snugging that down until it's "just" tight still pinches the receiver and affects cycling the action, so I would recommend only using scope mounts that straddle the receiver, and replace the nuts with nylock nuts. Always test your sights at the range. Lining up the two beads on the ventilated rib on my skeet gun on the bullseye would put my pattern about 13" to the left at 100 yards.

I only bought Hi-Viz Thombuster II sight for my 870 smooth bore 28 inc full length by Remington Slugger I had a similar group like yours. Pretty consistently. We tried my friend's one with a rifled barrel. We figured out the only thing you can win is a more compact size what is good for hunting from a ground blind or handle in a wild boar driven hunt. And for a mire handy gun, I don't think it would worth the money for hunting. I even don't go for a shorter barrel for home defense but a magazine extension instead. That way I have a pretty long gun yeah for sure but 10 round capacity is Hell of firepower with a 12 gauge not to mention how easy to mount white light on the magazine extension.

I have a Mossberg bolt action with rifled barrel that shoots groups so tight they take out the bullseye of the target with sabot slugs and a scope at fifty yards. Because the woods are so thick here you normally don’t get shots beyond thirty yards and is better than a rifle in brush. It is my deer gun of choice unless field hunting with potential long shots and no brush. Good video, not sure why the groups were not tighter with the sabots, could be the ammo. Darn good shooting with the rifled slugs, very impressive grouping.

I only use the rifled barrel for hunting. My 870 has a 7 round 1 piece factory mag. I use Foster Slugs in the stock 18.5" barrel. I only load #4 buckshot or 00 buckshot for indoor self defense. I run with an 870 3" Magnum. I BOUGHT a rifled barrel for it. Fact of the matter is that every round has its own best use. I dont often use scatter, but there are activities in which its good, so have the choked smooth barrel standing by. I would rather hunt with solid rounds as scatter is really kind of weak per round for big game, if they hit. I want to penetrate deeply, take out critical structure Im aiming for on the way. However the rifled barrel is largely for one single slug: The Brenneke Magnum Crush. You see, I have a foldable stock on the shotgun and its most often used as a camp gun. I run the Magnum Crush for 1 1/2 oz of hard cast at 3,800 foot pounds of impact on dangerous game with a 0.71" round. Bears. Its my bear gun and that is my bear round. It stops what you throw it at. Rifled Barrels ONLY. They are stronger, and right on the box its mandatory for this ammo. If I want to hunt something other than bear or wish to use a lighter round there are still high power alternatives. Red Magic for instance at 3,000 foot pounds is a sabot. Black Magic in the same ballpark is a slug. These can be run with smooth barrels apparently. Normally Its a pistol grip camp gun loaded with Crush and Im hunting with a 30-06 at 3000 foot pounds.

For accuracy at 100 yds my Savage 212 favors the 58 cal 1oz sabots over the lighter and faster 300 gr sabots. It shoots them all well enough for hunting but the Remington Accu Tip it favors the most with 3 shots making one ragged hole. Hornady SST it favors the least with 1.25" group at 100 yards.

@@StacyHagerty yes I agree my Savage 212 loves heavier slower slugs. Not saying the lighter faster ones are terrible in it but I notice a difference. Cleaning was worse with rifled slugs I would clean probably every chance you can. But shooting at 3 to 5 times in the field before cleaning would be fine. I would shoot about five rounds and then clean it while target shooting. It is dirtier but the lead in a good brass brush or borer snake cleans in a few pulls.

@@derekbeyers8804 OK great, I haven't tried rifled slugs. Was worried the barrel leading would be terrible to deal with. Have heard from others too that they group better out of a rifled barrel.

I have a Rem 870 shotgun with the same laminated stocks, and an 18/12 " cylinder bore barrel. The only difference is a Bushnell TRS 25 red dot that sits on a Remington saddle mount. I'm a useless shot without the red dot, but shoot fine with it. 😶

I thought the sabot would shoot better in the rifled barrel. Maybe try a rifled choke tube on the smooth bore barrel.

You can get pretty good accuracy with rifled chokes, and they are much cheaper than a rifled barrel.

If this is correct and I assume it is, you would be foolish to hunt with anything but the rifled slugs, they weigh more, bring more energy to the target deform more and are just plain more deadly than the sabot. I generally prefer buckshot as most of my hunting is done in very tight cover, but when I do hunt in more open areas I find very satisfactory results and I have no rear sight. Just a 30" barrel and a full choke, the same one I use for small game. Keep it simple one gun one barrel many different types of game good for deer, (buckshot and slugs) ducks, turkey, goose, bear, pheasants, coyote. Did I leave anything off the list?

I shot a deer with 44 mag soft point ( 8" ) & 12 ga Sabot slugs . The result was the same , they ran off with a heart shot & you could not tell they were hit . 75 yds & dropped . I will never use them again . 44mag with HPs ONLY , Much Better . The damage to the deer was the same , 1 clean hole in & out .

If you want the utmost accuracy from your slug gun, use at least a 22 or even a 24 inch rifled barrel is a must.... 18.5 inch is definitely inadequate...

Great job on this comparison video! I shoot a 12 customized J.C. HIGGINS 12 GA pump with a rifled choke tube it shoots two inch groups at 50yds. Shots ordinary FOSTER slugs just fine. This is a fixed barrel and not removeable, which helps with the accuracy. I have this gun scoped, and can change out the tube to FULL for spring turkey. From what I've learned shooting a SAVAGE 220 with a full rilfed barrel, they tend to shoot better with fancy, expensive SABOT shells.

There is no 'y' in sabot. If you are French you call it Sa'bo with no 't' as they have a silent t. Normal people call it sabot pronounced 'sabbit, rhymes with rabbit. If the army people call it a say-bow then they are wrong and of course stupid. When did army generals ever know anything. They have to get their mammas back to wipe their useless fat asses.

John here I shoot slugs ever year rifle slugs are the best buy the scope 870 barrel has 1.24 twist but simmon.s 1.5x5x32 diamond.. Barnes VT slugs 3 in or 2.3/4. Sight in at 100 yrds dead on. This will you out 150yrds easy. And at 100yrds the group will be 3 inch group. Are try different slugs as well in Sabot style. Stay with 1550 fps and 450 gr to 485 gr. Trust me on this. Your rifle sight barrel is 1.36 twist make for heater slower Sabot like the old 450 gr Winchester Sabot. And easy shoot 140 yrds.

You should try the new Russian cast slug molds offered by the Reloaders Network. In a fully rifled barrel, they shoot very accurately and are very inexpensive to make. They also shoot well out of a smooth bore. The Frag version is frighteningly powerful.

No, the smoothbore won't impart any spin on the round as it goes through the barrel. You can shoot it, but accuracy will be poor, and the slug will likely tumble.
