I just found this and I am very impressed. I have a 50's round badge kit in red sparkle. I thought about removing the wrap but I felt it was not a good idea. Maybe it is a good idea! I appreciate your documentation and comments. Excellent information. Be well!

GRB ..awesome job on the color .. I have 59' RB in Starlite .. How did they work around the badge? Impeccable work in all levels..was is precision? I'm contemplating making a,cannister throne in a matching starlite .if I can find one or perhaps another color scheme to play off the starlite . I've owned many a kit ..incl 3 collectibles from the other big guns ..but Gretsch is my go to set ..
@malonedrum
@malonedrum 2 жыл бұрын
It was precision work done by a true professional painter/furniture restorer. Taped off edges and inside of shells to avoid overspray on bearing edges. You can easily just remove the badges from the tacks to paint on the original round badges, very simple.

Great choice! Looks good man. What video editing software do you use? I want to make a video of my latest project too
@malonedrum

I use Final Cut Pro X. It’s really great if you 1) are willing to invest in software and 2) are willing to invest your time to learn it. It was tough for me at first to get comfortable, but now I operate on it faster than I would with iMovie.

Just starting to get into vintage kits and Gretsch has been an earlier favorite of mine. What era of vintage Gretsch drums are your favorite? Love the videos!
@malonedrum
@malonedrum 2 жыл бұрын
My personal favorite are the 60s era round badge drums, but if you're intimidated by the price (which I still very much am) the stop sign badge era Gretsch drums (70s) are typically a much better bang for your buck as collectors don't seem to be as high on those price wise.

@@malonedrum I had a question actually! I’m restoring my 60s gretsch kit right now. And I just ordered some badges for it. Is there any knowledge or maybe a video you could share that would help break down the process and procedure of how to tac your older gretsch badges?
@malonedrum
@malonedrum 2 жыл бұрын
@@noahreasoner The process is pretty simple, if the hole is already there, it's as simple as pushing the tack through the exsising hole and bending it over once inside the shell with some pliers, and maybe some light hammering to get it done in place and have it hold firm. At least that's my experience with it. I wasn't able to find any videos about it either, but I figured it out pretty quickly with this project.
@noahreasoner

@@malonedrum yeah there used to be one- but not only did I re-wrap it but the previous owner patched a lot of little holes so i have to create all new ones. Might even drill a tiny pilot hole
@malonedrum
@malonedrum 2 жыл бұрын
@@noahreasoner I would def do a pilot hole. Maybe a 1/16ths bit. Test it in some scrap wood

What kind of cymbal is that it sounds nice and how much was the job to paint the three drums.

I believe it's a 21" Bosphorus 20th Anniversary ride. I won't disclose the exact price, but I'd encourage you to reach out to Bruce (link in description) if you want to get a quote for your drums. It was extremely resonable for me, and a third of the price from what I was quoted by a drum shop.

Why not inlay the tom hoops to match?
@malonedrum
@malonedrum Жыл бұрын
That's a great question, and for many kits I think a matching inlay looks sharp, but I always enjoy the pairing of a complimentary, but different accent in the hoops. Traditionally the Cadillac Green finish had gold hardware on the drums, and lots also had the gold sparkle hoop inlay. I wasn't going to buy all gold hardware, so this is the next closest thing for me!

Hey I do same , I paint my drum with a car paint , its same quality , so try next time with a local car painter and yo will see its same at low cost.. its same process.... Greetings from Mexico...
@malonedrum
@malonedrum 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I’m sure there are some local people who offer the same high quality finishing, but I can’t recommend working with this company enough. It’s nice to have someone with drum specific experience for these timeless pieces like vintage drums. I think if it were a more replaceable drum, I’d be happy to work with a car paint shop.

The rack tom sounds pretty dead to me (low and high tuning)...! Maybe because it's sit on a snare stand, killing sustain... Beautiful kit anyway.
@malonedrum

Yeah, that one was taken a lot of finagling to get the right tone out of, I wonder if maybe the no vent hole thing builds up too much air passing with nowhere to escape.
