In part 7 of the 2 month road trip I'm truck bed camping near a remote stream in Colorado. I stumbled onto this stream the day before and only had a few hours to fish it. But quickly learned it was an amazing fishery full of plus size brown trout. I decided to fish it again today but hike further down stream. It was a slow morning so I hiked back to camp around lunch and went back above where I ended day 1...the fishing gets crazy good here! At the end of the first night a black bear came down the trail towards camp. A quick "hey bear" sent him running faster than I could get my camera out. Later in the trip, I wake up to paw prints on the back window of my camper! The series started in New Mexico, with stops in Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. See more below...
The first day on this stream:
• UNBELIEVABLE the size ...
Other parts in the series:
My Truck bed build - • Video
Series start in New Mexico Part 1 - • Part 1 - 2 month campi...

Hey Drew, I don't normally comment, but now I see you camping in Another of my "secret" spots! Literally, the same spot. Anyway, thanks for being discreet about where you're at, the locals really appreciate it. If you get back to this area hit me up .. seems we're already fishing the same places anyway. Cheers

With the new plastics, I have a difficult time relating to your "4x" Back in the day, fishing clear water in the NW, I had Maxima leader, pound and a half. more than that, the bigger, older, wiser fish would turn away. After 50 years of fly fishing, building my own rods, tying my flies and creating my own patterns, I do not fly fish anymore. I am perfectively capable but with two new knees I will not risk my knees wading a stream with steep banks and moss covered boulders. I have loaned my maple and walnut fly tying chest to my buddy along with my rod, a Loomis with my custom handle and reel seat. I like dry fly fishing best. If you want to eat fish for dinner your better off putting a chunk of night crawler on a wooly worm and go deep. Wrap a foil package of cleaned and cropped trout with some bacon bits and dried onion, salt and pepper. and put them on coals over Spruce bows about 20 minutes. Spruce will char but still hold the package up so it does not burn. I quit using a net after the elastic caused the net, hung on a branch to almost knock me out when I turned to see where it was hung up. Instead, I use a burlap bag that is cut so I can sling it over my shoulder. You can lead a nice trout in against the burlap while wading and just roll it into the bag. The cut is larger on the outside and creates a nice cradle for the fish. Wading while dry fly fishing is an important part of the experience and memory. Also working upstream is better for having a chance at the big ones. Iguana

Have heard that many times but feel like I'd just be doing the same thing differently. Not sure it would improve my fishing and might not work as well in the tightly covered areas where I can barely use a 7.5ft rod. Definitely see the advantage on wide open streams but I rarely know what the stream looks like until I get there.

Hi Drew, These videos of yours have rekindled my desire to head back to Colorado during our hot summers. Listening to the sounds of hiking and the water is so much more enjoyable than the constant commentary and canned music that you hear on so many other fishing videos. I feel I'm almost there. Keep up the good work. I have been looking a lot more at National Forest Service Dispersive camping maps and had a question. When a forest road map shows it is open to dispersive camping (i.e. dots on the sides of the road) can you pull off anywhere that you feel like setting up a camp as long as your not blocking the road or do you have to look for specific areas with fire rings and such?

Livin' the dream, Dude. Just wondering... You fish a lot of small water...which I really like, myself...but you use 4x tippet. Thx man. I do...I save the light stuff for fish that see flies regularly. But on remote water where the fish need to eat b/c the season is short...I've never found them to be leader/tippet shy...especially in streams like this one with good flow, a little stain and growth on the banks. Places like the San Juan, White River or catch and release areas that see a ton of pressure I go light! Fished a lot of 5x in Idaho bc the water was crystal clear.

I just found your channel. This puts me back to childhood, had a lot of fun with similar fishing here in a different part of the world . But nowadays the best small rivers are destroyed because it is all about maximizing the profit of selling electricity. You csn still find that kind of rivers, but would have to do a lot of searching, or go to a little bigger river with more commercialized fishing. Just wondered, do you ever eat some of the fish you catch? That is some healthy, nice tasting food. how do you rig the equipment? Do you tie the marker/floater, or what it is called, about 20 inches from a wetfly or dryfly?

They are spruce actually. the San Juans especially the areas located in Weminuche Wilderness where I presume he is (hope that's not giving too much up--the area is absolutely massive at 500,000 acres) have had their engelmann spruce decimated by beetles. The only large part of the San Juans that has avoided massive spruce beetle damage during this 20-year outbreak is the areas nearby and west of Silverton, with some smaller relatively unaffected areas in the southernmost South San Juan Wilderness and the drainages north of Uncompahgre Peak

I know man. Was working a project in India a long time ago and we had instructions for all new guys rotating in country to bring SPAM and cigars! SPAM, eggs and fried potatoes! 😋

I ran by GOSS in Benton and was told it would be 6 months before my shell arrives. No matter. I'm bound for the Little Red. How large is that tarp?

Was this filmed in August? Is it really that cold there in Aug?

No, I started this road trip June 13th so this was near the end of June. Left CO for Idaho around July 4th. Was in Wyoming in Aug.

Man there is a lot of standing fuel around you. The pine bark beetle has done a number on the west. What do you do with you dish washing water? Gross question: what do you do with your human waste? Cat hole, pack it out?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 2 жыл бұрын
They are crazy destructive. I follow the National Forest guidelines on disposing of human waste and my solar shower is super helpful for doing the dishes. When I can I rinse the food off in the stream and wash away from the stream. Use dawn dish soap and very few dishes to clean.

Does no one wear small bells on their vest or boots to let the bear know you’re in the neighborhood? We do in the smoky mt and it works with black bears. Never tried it with grizzlies.

I haven't, heard about it but don't know anyone who has tried it. Good to know it works tho!

Fish a lot of small, remote streams and have tried the bells but found out the sound of the stream drowns it out. Found that a whistle or a "hey bear" works better@@LooknFishy
