Remove 1998-2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 Pulse Vacuum Hub without the special Ford Tool

I figured out a way to quickly and easily remove the pulse vacuum hub on my 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 front hub assembly without damaging it, and without using the special Ford tools that the repair manuals call for.
All you need is a small screwdriver, a pair of needle nose pliers, and some thin gauge metal wire. Only took me about 4 minutes to remove the hub.
It occurred to me later, after I recorded this video, that you could probably use heavy duty staples (for a staple gun, not a desk stapler) instead of wire. Either one should work fine.

Worked like a charm. Used the wire from a landscape marking flag cut into 12 small pieces. Thanks!

I usually remove these by using 6 old (or new) jigsaw blades! Place 1 blade in each of the slots (the side of the blade that goes into the saw) then wrap your hands around them pushing them toward the center, this releases all 6 at once. While holding give it a slight wiggle and off it comes!

Used your concept to remove my vacuum hub. Didn't have any wire but used thin plastic zip ties instead. It took a bit of effort to get them under each tab but it worked. To anyone else attempting this be careful when prying with screwdriver the plastic tabs are pretty easy to damage. Good useful idea. Thanks

Another suggestion would be to use staples from a stable gun. Actually, I think those would work better than my original idea of using the wire pieces. Staples from a staple gun are nice and thin, but rigid. They would be very easy handle, probably much more so than the wire pieces I originally tried.

BickUW89 im trying to get the retainer clip back on a 2000 4x4 ranger it seems to be too small says its for a 1996 any ideas?

Great little tip. Thanks for sharing. My 4x4 system on my ranger is engaging, but the vacuum system seems to be messing up.. so getting ready to try and find some manual hubs to order so I can fix it for good.

Great tip! The 4wd went out on my '99 and I havent got around to fixing it and this tip will come in handy when I do. Not exactly sure what it is yet but Ill have to do some more research to narrow it down. I think it might be the seals but it could be the vacuum modulator. I do hear the right front hub try to lock but it never seems to fully engage.

I have removed both Pulse Vacuum Hubs on my 99 ranger several times without using the metal clips to hold the tabs. I just used the flat head into the tab method as you have already found. The hardest time I had removing them was the first time so Im guessing the more you do it without the special tool the strain it puts on the system. Also I remember reading somewhere that if you replace your unit bearings you should also replace the Pulse Vacuum Hub too just in case.

THANKS, worked great. NONE of the big chain auto parts stores have that special FoMoCo tool *for rent* but some will sell it for $110+ ! These PVH hubs get a bad rap, but the hub itself works forever, it's almost always the peripheral rubber parts (O-rings, vacuum hoses) that fail. Mine rolled off the assembly line > 21 years ago, but the splines are still fine, and the rubber "cap" inside that contains the vacuum are _like new_ so I'd love to know what "Space Age" polymer they're made of.

excellent!!! post tyyyyy. would you know if the complete hub units of the older bronco 11 or what years would fit these 1999 ranger 4x4 small trucks?? i mean a manual locking hub? that i could use to eleminate everything and just get out of my truck and physically turn the hub to manually lock it in. this way i could get away from troubleshooting all this nonsense stuff of hoese and etc.thats on these 1999 rangers?? ty for you great and super posting

Bro I have no idea what the fuss is about. Mine popped off effortlessly with a minor bit of persuasion and a screwdriver 🪛. Somebody else probably already removed them earlier. No need for any special tool! Just cut these things off and replace with MANUAL locking hubs!

GET RID OF THOSE AUTO HUBS. Pieces of crap. Manual hubs are the way to go. The seal on these is terrible and if you do any kind of off roading these things will leave you stranded because they won't lock with the slightest vacuum leak.
