Use an old chain, wrap it around the cassette, lase the two chain ends thru the closed end of a wrench and put it the closest it can go to the cassette. Grab the chain and the wrench firmly with your left hand pulling to the left and with your right hand use the tool to unscrew the cassette lock ring.

Quick PSA: He used the adjustable wrench backwards. It doesn’t matter too much on such a large fastener, but it is more likely to slip when used in this fashion. Nice ingenuity with the glove though, sometimes no tool is the best tool

I always use an old kitchen towel and just wad it up around the cassette. Works great.

Smart. I made a whip with a piece of chain bolted to what was an oil filter wrench handle. It’s still my only whip after years of use 🙂

Putting a 9mm qr spindle through the tool/hub helps hold the tool in place while you wrench 🔧 🙏

I've got a DT Swiss 350 with a SRAM GX 12 speed cassette on it. Once the wheel is out of the frame, the whole cassette can just be popped off with my hands.

Yea but you can not take of the cassette like that. The body is still in the cassette. For changing the cassette you need tho do it like he showed

Thats not a “cassette tool” thats just a crescent wrench. The cassette tool you’re referring to is an inner lockring wrench.

The gears are on the freewheel, they get put on it and can't rotate, but it can move up thats why the thread is there. The freewheel is just like a shaft in a motor. It blocks the gears from rotating and the freewheel on it's own provides that rotation in only one direction(a side effect is that clicking sound).

Not all the time. I've taken off cassets that were super tight. Always better to have the right tool. Y can get it cheap.

you realize that you are still using a specialty tool (the splined adapter for the cassette)? chain whip plus the cassette adapter is less than 20 bucks on amazon. Why have one and not the other?
