Remove Coke Can from Coke

In this video we do something really silly and remove a can from the coke it contains.
To do the demonstration: First get any soft drink can and using sandpaper, sand off the label. Then open the can and suspend it by the tab in 5% hydrochloric acid. The exact concentration is not critical. The can must be opened or it will rupture as the aluminum is removed.
over the course of an hour, the aluminum in the can will be attacked by the acid and dissolve away. This leaves behind the drink and also a very thin plastic liner inside the can. This liner protects the drink from leaching metals out of the can. Carefully lift the can to reveal the liner still holding the drink.

I love how it gets to the point. I HATE channels that go on and on. Anyone else would have given the history of coke cans and explained what hydrochloric acid does to everything else BUT a coke can and would have shown miltiple failed attempts until finally getting to the short 30 second part everyone clicked the video for. You give just enough commentary to be entertaining but not too much to make me lose interest.

The table had oilcloth on it, and there wasn't really any time to clean it up, so he left it. Next day, the oilcloth has a huge hole in it and the table is visibly burnt. Kinda crazy to think that people drank that

It isn't a plastic liner. It's a lacquer coating that gets sprayed into the can during manufacturing. I make them (cans that is). Fun fact: Formaldehyde is an ingredient in the lacquer that is used.

The liner is not plastic. It's a food grade laquer that's sprayed into each can as they're formed. It's purpose is to keep the carbonation from coroding the aluminum. 😉

In the industry this layer is called the “varnish” and it’s sprayed into the can where it cures. The varnish formulation and density (layer thickness) can vary based on the type of beverage but it’s not just there to protect the product from the can, it also protects the can from the product! While some are worse than others most soda’s, fruit or sport drinks are acidic enough to eat through the can if not for the protective layer. Diet 7up is one of the more notorious examples, if there’s a defect in the varnish, the cans will only last abt 72 hours before they start leaking.

1:55 The bottom dome didn't dissolve because it wasn't in the acid. It was protected by the air bubble that formed underneath as you submerged the can.

For future reference I once found that drain cleaner concentration sulfuric acid will cook the label right off with ease then wipe off with dry baking soda and rinse with water and almost no etching will occur because of the passivation at room temperature at that concentration. I have even used this to "draw" on the cans a few times.

Kyle x oh, well of you left it in the sulfuric acid for an extended period of time I guess you have a point as it probably would still eat in ever so slowly, especially if in open air as it may pull in more moisture from the air and once in the soft drink inside could be dangerous as that would release heat upon dilution and hydrogen once the hot diluted acid interacted with the de-painted exterior. So perhaps I should clarify you only need to touch the paint for less then a second and I tend to wipe it around with something like a piece of plastic then neutralize with the backing soda, aside from the standard dangers of working with concentrated sulfuric acid it shouldn't cause danger that way.

It's lacquer. Lacquer is made from tree sap. It's sprayed into the cans to prevent the contents from dissolving the can, and to prevent the metal from changing the drinks flavor. Lacquer is also used in hairspray.

@@thebestofall007 diluted solution are great too because aluminum are basically amphoteric metal (could dissolve in acidic/basic solution)

Sodium hydroxide will work this experiment has been performed before with that acid.

Is the liner BPA free? So now if we've been avoiding plastic due to the hormones being affected then we're screwed.

Almost everything is BPA free now... They've just moved on to other chemicals in the same family that are not regulated, or studied as well. I believe some of the research on the new chemicals shows they are just as bad as BPA. This is why it's good to go back to glass or stainless steel drinking/storage containers.

I always knew of the plastic sprayed in liner... but, this is clever!!! Even the title is clever... Reminds me of the "removing the girl from the street, but you can't remove the street from the girl" so to speak, or politely put it... lol
