I use a simple dog training rule with all my dogs and teach that same rule to my students. The rule is easy to implement and will exponentially improve your dog training success, help your dog learn faster and grow your dog’s confidence. It has everything to do with the rate of reinforcement and how to reward your dog to build good behavior. Only 2 in 30 people follow this rule, but we can get that number much higher after this episode!
In the episode you'll hear:
• About the data I collected around success habits in dog training.
• How dogs respond if the dog training is confusing for them.
• The ratio of 2 of 30 people who create success with mindfulness.
• Why to reduce the use of non-reward markers in dog training.
• The reason to interrupt your dog when they get something right!
• Why to believe your dog when they answer your dog training questions.
• How to reward your dog in a behavior chain using fetch as an example.
• An example of being 2 of 30 when you are training in dog agility.
• Why a high rate of reinforcement increases your dog’s success and confidence.
• How to ask your dog training questions and take action on the answers.
• About Screw Up Cookies for dog training and why to use them.
• How and when to reward your dog for what you love.

This is so so hard to explain to the 28/30! They're always pushing just a bit too far every time. I really enjoy that you talk about topics that aren't touched on in typical training environments. Thank you!

I do solemnly swear, hand over heart, to the best of my abilities to be present for my dog and listen to him and learn from him and figure out together how to have the best relationship we can have and try always to be one of the 2 of 30… I am getting a puppy in a week. I am watching your videos… I wish I had found them years ago! This is my fourth dog and I have learnt so much from each of them. Thanks!

Oh my goodness!! This was the information I didn't know I needed. It is already making a difference! It will definitely time me time to learn to notice and break down the different steps, but ... wow! Learning to see our 'games' as a conversation of question asked and question answered brought real clarification to so many things that I didn't understand about why Willow wasn't doing what I thought I had taught her. I was not listening to her answers.

I'm so glad I re-watched this episode tonight. I'm rewarding my dog quickly as he learns to be calmer around other dogs and it paid off big time at the vets today. He was able to sit in the waiting room with 3 other dogs as I kept cookies coming to reinforce his good behavior. 👍 Now I also understand how I can apply this to chains of trick training ! I was asking him to go to the next step before rewarding his correct action on the previously incorrect move! Thanks for the clarity,SG 😀

Just recently came across your youtube platform andI love listening and watching your videos. So many things you discuss and teach are things ive always done and learned over the years doing my own research training pets and working with trainers with my own pups just to learn better techniques. Unfortunately, my 2 favorite trainers no longer live in our area, and I've yet to find someone who trains to my standards, patience, and gentleness. Any tips on how to train the other human counterpart who loves dogs, but refuses to take the time to participate in the training? I spend so much time working with our 5 pups every day, and they do wonderful all day, but when he gets home... it drives me nuts, and he breaks them (as I put it), and I sometimes have to go back to the beginning. 😅

Susan, I'm SOOO glad I found your channel :) We have a 15 week old Mini Aussie and your insights and approach are spot on. I subscribe to half a dozen other training channels, and the insights you give into dog psyche are delivered in a way that's unique, understandable, and in a clear format for us to follow. BIG thanks.

Simply brilliant as always. I so badly want to be able to walk in public without him reacting to other dogs that I neglect to ask him “Are you ready for this?” when I know he will say “nope … not quite”. But it’s been almost 2 years of work and I admit that I’m losing enthusiasm for the training.

I had exactly the same feeling, I’m a year into trying to resolve an issue, only found Susan’s Podcasts recently and already massive improvement has been made. Got stuck down a rabbit hole with less knowledgable dog trainers, wish I’d found Susan a year ago! That said we’re doing much better and I’m confident Susan has a podcast for every question you have, stick with it you’ll get there😊

I’m trying to learn agility and this episode really resonated. My 2 yo cattle dog/GSD/Australian shepherd is very smart. So I assume she “gets” agility. What I’m realizing is that she’s not looking to me but rather trying to figure it out on her own. Likewise, we go to a drop in obedience class twice per week and I think it’s amusing that she’s listening to the trainer calling out the commands. Makes me think I need to work on our working connection. Thanks!

This is a great concept and I didn't realize until I watched this that this is what I've actually been doing intuitively! I drop back to a safe/easy function when my puppy doesn't complete the function I ask of him. It seems to refocus him again and then sometimes I can go back to the other command.

Another GEM Susan! Thank you. I have noticed lately that I use a lot of "oupsy" when my pup gets it "wrong" and I can see how his behaviour changes... I really need to stop doing it and will checked out (again) podcast #64.

Great podcast. Very timely as I have been videoing my training per your advice and notice I do use a sound that my dog has associated as a “non reward marker” and he barks at me in frustration. Will be more aware of this going forward in my training.

This lesson is how I found YOU Susan, I was working with an agility trainer (who would constantly quote you) whose method of teaching was; what their perception of what the student wanted, not what their students and their K9s needed, not only was there a discommunication and lack of clarity between student and teacher, it was evident in the amount of return students making the same mistakes. Thank you Susan and your crew for doing what you do!

Susan, this was great and soooo true!!! I love your podcasts. I have an issue with my 7 month old female Border Collie who is almost always in "overdrive". She forges/pulls on her leash if she sees something she wants which includes all people and dogs. She will do this to the point of choking herself and coughing which doesn't faze her and she will even stand up and pull at the end of a short or long leash and cough. I am concerned about turning that into a permanent cough. I have 3 other B.C.'s which I have trained to loose leash walk (2 of them do agility, 1 does obedience) but this one is a challenge. She has done this from the start. Steak or her tug toy which she loves has no value and will not redirect her. I have taken a couple of classes from you which is the BEST thing I have ever done. She is plenty smart and aces impulse control, crate games, puppy agility, etc.. I am needing help! What do you recommend I do?
