Premiere only has the rudiments of a keyer, so you will never get a perfect result! As Premiere is an editing software. So in a professional workflow the cutter or editor of a film uses the keyer in Premiere only to get a preview or reference. This will then be handed over to the VFX department to fine-tweak it.

Thank you so much for this turoial! Danke! :-) How would you approach your workflow if you had to edit an entire sequence shot infront of a green screen? Would you key everything first and then edit your sequence in premiere or the other way around? Hope you can give me some advise. Cheers

Hey! So in a professional surrounding, you would go to the editing first and then apply the effects (that's why it is called AFTER effects) So when doing the edit you could use the ultra keyer in Premiere. It is just a simplified version of a keyer, which does exactly what is meant to do in Premiere. Give a good preview for the cutter / editor. Normally the VFX artist that works on the shot gets the Greenscreen shot, together with this Previs Shot that the editor has done, to get an understanding of the scene or a good reference. Because normaly the artist is not filming and has not been on set. So the guidance from the editor as well as the supervisor is super important! I hope this answers your question!

I am tormented by one question that is not shown in the video - exposure time. How is this done in film production? When shooting people with fast movement 24 frames / 180 degrees There is motion blur between the subject and the green background, it becomes impossible to cut out the green background well. If you shoot with the shortest possible exposure, then the background is cut out perfectly, at the end you can add motion blur programmatically. The result is perfect. But a couple more questions arise, Why did I buy ND filters? If I can shoot with a fast shutter speed, and then add motion blur programmatically on any scene, not only with chroma key. I also can stabilize footage programmatically well if shot with short exposition time. And is there any difference between long exposure motion blur on camera and software motion blur?

Hey! First question: an a big movie you do not crack up the shutter speed to get a better keying result! Two reasons for that: fake motion blur will always look fake and you would need to add that to all shots!! That would just cost to much money and time in post production! Second reason: Ligth on a movie set costs money. For example on a small stage you may pay around 10.000 to 20.000$ dollars a day for light! If you make the shutter speed twice as fast, you need twice the light!! NO PRODUCTION will pay that!! before they spent 10.000 dollars a day for extra light, they give less money to the post production, because a good key is cheaper that light!! haha... does that make sense? And an a good lit greenscreen you can key everything!! Belive me!! Even fast out of focus motion blur!! That is part of the job!! Noone said it would be easy!!

guys, i have a 5 min video where i have 3-4 green screen scenes. The others scenes are without green screen. How can i define the beginn and end of the green screen. because when i use keylight, it automatically works for the whole video and destroy my coloures if i change screen matte settings? thanks for any response

Hey! You need to cut your Video and only apply the effect to the part with greenscreen. You can do that by clicking Ctrl + shft + d.

Haha... well it seems that you know, that a "normal" key does not only exist out of one keylight layer, but one keylight for hair left, one for hair right, one for left shoulder... and so on and so on... but do you want me to do that in a tutorial? Instead of 10 minutes it will be hours... and it is the same process over and over again... but indeed it will be worth mentioning!! Lets do that in the next keying tutorial!!
