Remove Internal Overflow Box

So I picked up this reef ready 60 gallon cube on Craigslist, but can't stand how big the internal overflow box is. So, I cut it out this morning. Plan is the plug to bottom holes, drill new holes in the back and install a low profile overflow box in the back.

I wanted to do this to my 65g. You gave me an idea, I'll just put it on it's back and clean out really good. It looked like a pain to remove but came out nice and clean. This might be the only video on KZfaq removing a overflow. Glad I found this rare gem. Thanks

I'm buying a used 225 tank soon and will be taking out the 2 overflow boxes and cutting out all of the silicone inside, wiping it all down with 100% acetone and SELSIL Aquarium Silicone Sealant instead of the generally used GE silicone. With 225 gallons, there's literally thousands of pounds of pressure to deal with and no margin for error or failure because I could have done it a little better.

Maybe use a heat gun from the outside to soften silicone and lay it on its back to work

That might work, but I'd be worried about the glass cracking from the heat and the pressure of the putty knife. If I ever had to do it again, I'd do exactly what I did in the video. It worked perfectly.

I used bulkheads and PVC plugs to seal the holes. Been up an running for almost a year now with no issue...well, no issue with the bulkheads plugging the holes :-). It is my first reef tank and I've had plenty of newbie issues, but it has been a very rewarding learning process.

Did you use one of the holes for water changes like you mentioned?

@@jp4raiders38 I ended up not, but then I wished I had. It would have made water changes much easier. I don't have this tnsk anymore. Upgraded to a 180 gallon tank, and installed and automatic water change system which I love!

@@christophercrawford8237 is an automatic water change system a sump basically? I just got a 120 reef tank with dual overflows with all the plumping and I just want to remove the over flows

@@captainrickyfla6170 no, a sump and an automatic water change system are two different things and you can have one without the other. A sump is a separate tank underneath your display tank where you can keep your filtration, heaters etc. Water from the display tank drains downn into the sump gets filtered and them pumped back up into the display. The overflow boxes prevent the whole volume of display tank water from draining down into the sump if the pump turns off. There are many ways to do an automatic water change system, but mine uses two small peristaltic pumps to pump old water out of the aquarium and into a drain at Rhee same rate that new water is pulled into the aquarium.
