Sometimes the mounting hardware bolts can strip or become stuck on a skateboard. Some people try to saw them off, but there is an easier way to remove stuck skate hardware quickly without causing any damage to the deck.
There are 2 different sizes for commonly used cross head or Phillips head screw drivers. Skate hardware requires a size number 2 screw driver or size 2 phillips head bit.
All you need is a screw/drill gun, a 5/32 drill bit, and a 3/16 drill bit.
Step 1:
Clamp or hold the nut on the end of the bolt. Drill into the head of the bolt about 1/8th of an inch using the 5/32 drill bit.
Step 2:
Using the 3/16 bit, drill into the hole you made using the 5/32 bit until the head of the bolt comes off.
If the head of the bolt is becomes stuck on the drill bit holt it with a pliers and twist the head off of the drill bit.
This method works for all skateboard hardware including street skateboards, downhill and longboard skateboards.

Thanks a mill for the reply. Your vids are great. In the end I hack-sawed a new groove in to the bolt-head and then used a regular screwdriver, which worked too. Just finished re-gripping it too with your griptape video for guidance. Thanks again. A.

Whenever you drill into metal, it's a good idea to use a little 3-in1 oil to lubricate the cut. Also, a low rpm will usually carve the metal into thicker curls , and not ruin the bit.

Yes it does. Use the same size drill bits.

Yeah. We've done that a bunch of times. But most people usually gut into the deck and trucks. Sometimes the bolt won't allow the saw blade to fit underneath the baseplate. It is way easier with a drill gun.

You need to use a socket wrench with a long handle so you have more torque and leverage. You can also use vice grip pliers. Those work the great. They clamp onto the nut so you don't have to squeeze the pliers. Put some muscle into the turning. In this case you can use a tiny bit of WD-40 too.

The board may get some small cracks depending on the size of the head on the bolt. Some hardware will just right through the holes, but you'd have to really do that on purpose for it to happen. If you are screwing with a drill gun have it set on the highest settings you can run the risk of screwing too far into the board. The head of the bolt needs to be flush with the deck or grip tape. There may be a chance you're over thinking this. Just be careful and you'll do fine.
@RatVision

You're right, but not that many people have those, and are not going to run out and get one for this. Thanks for posting the comment and info.

We need to do a video on this. It seems that quite a few people have this problem. What you need to do is use a screw driver to put pressure behind the nut. This will hopefully stop the nut from spinning on the axle. You may need someone to help you hold the board while you use 2 hands to do this. Again, you're going to pry on the nut while another hand spins the nut. Prying should help the nut grab onto some threads. Let us know if it worked for you.

great tutorial! it looks so easy in the video but even after doing what you said it still won't come out. any ideas? I should also add that the bolts were new and so it wasn't the top of the screw that's stripped but either the threads of the screw or the bolt.
@RatVision
@RatVision 12 жыл бұрын
You'll need to add some force from behind it as you try to turn it. Try wedging a flat head screw driver behind the nut.

Way? Down is really the answer. Meaning the drill bit should spin to the left as you push straight down into the bolt head.

I had one bolt left on my longboard that was completely stripped. So what I did was use vise grips (as shown what you are holding), pushed the screw all the way forward, clamped on the vise grips to the screw, and started to move the screw left and right until the core of the screw was fairly soft, and then pulled as hard as I can with an angle. It broke like butter.

You can try to put a hacksaw blade between the baseplate and deck and saw it off. You just have to be careful not to cut into the deck or trucks. A little bit won't hurt.

You can also first try using a putting a rubber band over the screw head, and then inserting your screwdriver into the screw. The rubber may be able to fill in the gaps and add enough friction between the screwdriver and the screw to take out the screw.

no worries man, ended up using a hammer to pound the bolt down and create some space and then a hack saw to get underneath. It turned out with almost no scratches so I was stoked! Thanks anyway man! BTW, I remember you doin a couple of videos on bearings and in one of them, you ended saying that the best bearings you found were Oust and that ideal bearings are made in the US. I had 2 questions about that - what makes US bearings so good and 2) do you know any street skate shops that sell Oust?

@jameson55ify For squeaky trucks use bee's wax in the pivot cup bushing and your kingpin bushings. Use enough to coat the surface. Also rub a little on the metal contacting surfaces too. There are a lot of videos out there of people using a bar of Dove soap. This works a bit too, but I like bee's wax more. It seems to last longer and stays on better. Plus moisture won't take it off. I'll have a video on this soon. I need a lot of stuff to do these videos so I use ATM because they're inexpensive.

@jameson55ify There isn't anything you can do for a broken base plate. If it is a new baseplate and you were only skating when it broke you could be able to return it to the shop you got it at or to the truck company and get a replacement.

@RatVision
@RatVision 10 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you are over thinking this. If you put a board on a really flat surface you will notice that one wheel is off the ground. This is caused from the bushings of one truck. There isn't anything wrong. The bushing did't move the hanger back to it's center point. This can happen with new trucks more often because the bushings can be sticky and gripping on the metal of the trucks. while riding your body weight levels everything out. The bolts are fine, even one goes in a little far.

you can also take a thick elastic band, and put it over the stripped screw, then try unscrewing it again, the extra grip from the rubber should be enough to get even that extremly stripped screw out.

The truth is any country can make great bearings, even better than the US if desired. The US is known for exceptional manufacturing, precision, and quality because of a higher standard of quality. The US takes pride in it's machining and manufacturing. A lot of other countries have a lot of pride in what they do too. This is why Swiss and German bearings are known to be of high quality too than most Chinese bearings. BUT remember "Swiss" does indicate anything other than Made In Switzerland.

Every truck works. Some are of course are slightly better than others. It's a lot of complicated geometry stuff that we will be explaining in a upcoming video. BUshings also have a lot to do with how well a truck works. I don't know what type of skating you do either. Since you are still fairly new, any truck will work great. You can certainly go with the lowest price and be perfectly fine. Shop employees hardly ever know anything about product, but they should at least know what size you need.

I would recommend Venture trucks, however the important thing is to get the right size trucks and the right type for what you need. If your board is 8" wide, you need a truck that matches that size accordingly. It's bad to have wheels that are not lining up with the board's edge. Not just for primo tricks, but rather for a general sense of balance and being able to see the wheels when doing grinds, ollies and so on. Too wide isn't good either, because it will interfere with rotating the board in a flip trick, it looks ugly and you can forget about doing anything primo. Even if you land accidentally in primo, you will want it to go at level angles, trust me. Much better for your ankles. Last but not least, there are a lot of very decent trucks in the mid price range, so don't go blind on a brand. Independents and Ventures are popular for a reason. Even something like the Mini Logo trucks are likely to be much much better trucks than the Amazon stuff.

Hi skateboardtech, I have this problem. I got new trucks and I mounted them on my deck and then I put the wheels on but the trucks weren't evenly tightened to the board (I think) and the trucks were rickety. What I mean by this is that it was like a wobbly table. I think I have tightened by nuts down to the deck too much on one of the bolts, it's sitting sort of indented into the griptape. I just loosened the bolts enough to stop the wobble. When is tight too tight? and how can I prevent this?ty
