The knocking Caterpillar D4600 Engine in the Bay City shovel is finally getting some love. Follow along as we pull it out, take a trip down memory lane, and pet on the Terex crane. Thanks for watching!

Several years ago, during a addition build to a manufacturing facility, the employees of the company were concerned about diesel smoke and smell even though we had constructed a temporary wall between. They contacted the city health people to test the air. After all the excitement it was determined that the levels of CO were well within safety levels. One of the company's LP forklifts drove by the tester and sent the meter into fits. As it turned out their forklifts far exceeded toxic safety levels. Had to smile after that!:)😊

For health reasons, why not install through door/wall exhaust hose exits for both of the fumes? It is only a 5 or 6 inch hole that the aluminum sleeve sits in. Over the last 50 years I have installed 25 or 30 of them in automotive service bay doors, walls and gas station doors. Now I don't remember if I bought them through McMaster or Grainger but I still see them around.

Nice work on an old machine. If your going to use the crane a lot indoors, fit a cats whisker style limit switch to the top of the jib wired as an upper limit. That way the crane will stop before punching thru the roof. Just an idea. All the best.

A new or rebuilding the regulator will help greatly. The diaphragms get stiff and less sensitive. Also with a manometer (inches of water) there is a spec for the amount of propane out of the regulator. Sounds like you have a regulator that isn't putting anything out until it sees a negative pressure on the venturi.

LOL the cap bill keeps you from seeing what you're about to collide with. A place I used to work had a half platform landing that was a little over head height. It took me a long time to learn to put one hand on the support beam when walking under it. You knew it was there and without the hand on if for reference you could walk smack into it and see stars. With a hand on it you knew when to duck and if you walked in to your hand, at least the head didn't hurt so much.

That mixture is what I call A diesel syrup additives cocktail blend for A engine helper outter solution. It is your machine after all anyways. I'm just tossing out there A few old-school back in those days remedies to try.,or can be used and still safe. And helps out with removing emissions while the engine is up and running to. It does self clean out. There is A additives out called STA-BIL fuel treatment fuel stabilizer for all types of fuel just about almost that is. There is A few that isn't included in those fuel line ups still out though to. Anyways good 🤞 luck on your engine rebuild and reinstallment to.

In regard of the propane system, I think you got an Impco system. The Impco style variable venturi systems are quite good, they should work more than fine for your application. A rebuild kit should solve your issue. Systems of later date, with a fixed 'nozzle-ring' over the carb work well, yet perform less.

I can't believe this machine cost $11k in 1941. That's a ton of money back then when a Chevy was $1k or less. Nice Airstream motorhome. I have a 1967 26ft Airstream trailer, restored. Why does the Cat engine have so much oil on it. It is not a Detroit 2 stroke, lol... Have a great week.

Nice to see a brief cameo of him there wrenching on that engine. Really interesting dive into the history of that digger and the scrap book definitely was cool. A fellow might think you guys are pros at engine removals from antique excavation equipment. Definitely wanna see an episode of swapping the Trex over to a new modern propane system.
