Removing a corroded aluminium seatpost from a steel bike frame

The aluminium seat post had corroded inside the steel frame of this fixie bicycle. When I tried to grab it in the vice and twist the frame off it just sheared down inside the tube. So I cut a slit with a hacsaw and padsaw and then folded the metal inside until it became loose and fell down the tube. Then I cleaned out the frame with a wire brush and subsequently a file and eventually I was able to get a grip on it and pull it out.
No, penetrating oil did not work, I tried that first, WD40.

I've seen an Indonesian video where the mechanic used a couple of nuts locked to the end of a threaded rod to pull the post out. My own recent experience was that sawing internally worked pretty well. By cutting the seatpost off then cutting a slot in it with a metal disc on an angle grinder, right down into the frame slot, I ended up with only about 6" of the post to saw through.

Excellent work! The only thing I would have done differently is take the bottom bracket out before the sawing. I'm at this point right now with mine. Sawed on it for a couple hours. Now I'm letting is soak tonight with penetrating oil (probably won't help at all, but it's time to take a break anyway). Tomorrow this thing is coming out!

6:22 some of my teeth loosened when exposed to that squeak! Metal fingernails on a Mr Muscle polished blackboard stuff! Great job getting the seat-post out, I'm going to have to try something similar on a bike I picked up for free!

I think cutting and sawing out is the best way to go when it’s really corroded like that.

I would try the same way, but I would be a bit more careful.

Slide hammer it out

Slide Hammer with a toggle bolt attached to the end. Trim back the sides of the toggle so that the face catches the bottom of the tube.
