Removing a White Rogers Thermostat and installing a Nest thermostat

This is the basic procedure to remove an older style mechanical White-Rogers thermostat, and the installation of a 3rd generation Nest thermostat.

I the video, there is a blue wire left unconnected. I strongly suggest you connect that blue, or Common, wire to the C pin. The nest will use it for continuous power. Otherwise, the nest will only get power while the heat or cool is not operating and charge a small internal battery during the off cycle. If the weather changes and the demand for heat or cool is extended, your nest thermostat could stop working until that battery is re-charged.

Moochas gracias, moochacho. It was comforting to see my ancient thermostat's picture, right there on the screen. Everything that you mentioned applied exactly to my circumstance. I had to enter only four wires (r,g,w,y) into the Nest start-up, for it to proceed. At first, I entered (rh, rc,g, y, w) and it would not let me proceed. It said, "Your system is not compatible with Nest"

Solid tutorial. I've got the same thermostat in my house. I noticed you didn't have a C wire to connect to the Nest template. I've heard the Nest thermostat requires 24 V from from the C wire to function properly. Have you had any issues with your compressor?

Check the Nest support as it mentions why the C wire is typically not required. Here's an excerpt from their site: "Nest thermostats are engineered to use very little power less than 1 kWh/month. For comparison a typical 40W light bulb that's used 4 hours per day consumes about 5 kWh/month. So even though Nest thermostats have Wi-Fi activity sensors color displays and more they typically don't need a C wire to stay charged up" However, the Nest support site also mentions why a C wire might be required (if you are experiencing certain issues after install). The problem is if you don't have a C wire and require it, you'll need to call a HVAC professional to help diagnose and possibly install if possible.

Is you white roger for cooling or heating, or for both? I have exact same connection for cooling, plus I have 2 wire old thermostat for heating. I am trying to combine 2 to one nest 3rd gen now. I read w1 on nest is for heating, i am not sure what is w1 for on white Roger cooling thermostat. If i connect w1 from white roger(used for cooling) to nest w1( designed for heating) where do I connect 2 wires for heating on nest? BTW my heating system is hot water boiler. Thanks.

Hi, I have more or less the same thermostat as you, mine however, has these connections. G, RC, RH, Y, W. It also has a connection labeled A, and I don’t know what it’s for, do you know? Or did you have the same connection

I've same White Rodgers thermostat and this video really helps. Why did you labelled the yellow wire as Y1 as I could not find the same in my old thermostat?

Yeah every thermostat could have a little different wiring and colors. What's important is to look at the colors and their location on the old thermostat taking note before disconnecting. Then you can use that as a guide for hooking up the new thermostat.

Whats funny is I replaced my two year old electronic digital programmable thermostat for a new old stock White Rodgers thermostat identical to yours because there so more reliable and basic. You can't beat the old mercury White Rodgers thermostat for reliable and longevity.

I actually agree. While I really do like the Nest, I'll admit their service life is usually 2-4 years before something goes wrong. Google doesn't sell the base separately, so if it goes bad the whole unit has to be replaced.

I have a question, I need help: The big wire that's coming out from the wall has only three wires: Red, Green and Yellow (or maybe White, is discolored pretty bad...) How do I need to connect these three wires, please, to the new thermostat?

Hello ，I have a question for the fan,. you know the old one can not stop fan. if we use nest , it can do the stop?

The thermostat does have fan controls. However and unrelated, I had a problem once where the fan was stuck on and wouldn't turn off and it was a problem with a control board that needed replaced in the main unit, not the thermostat. I had a HVAC professional fix it.

Going from programmable back to old school. Save AA batteries and use it in a really hot location. The digital stuff never would cycle properly anyhow.
