All the articles mention this tool, they say it is needed, so this is what i bought. Well after fiddling again with the siding it doesn't work, it is so tight in there it will not snap back into place. So this brings me to my Quesiton....you talk about removing the aluminum piece and then cutting off the top bit, and then drilling and putting in a nail and that 99% of the time the siding will not "snap" back in after removing it. I did not find this info anywhere else, glad i found it.

Great video. As I just bought a house with aluminum siding and am removing a huge wall air conditioner (that has not worked in years) and moving a door … this will be very helpful. Worst case, I may do what you suggested with a sheet metal and a break … but I am looking for about 60 feet of siding in the meantime. Thanks for the great instruction. I've done enough vinyl siding that I think I'll be OK.

thanks for the video. i do have a couple of quesitons though. My situation is very simple, i have a couple of places on my exterior aluminum siding that came apart. I have read several articles on the web (6 or 7) then i watched a bunch of youtube vids on repair. I tried fixing/repairing the loose areas myself for quite sometime without any luck. After searching 6 hardware stores i finally found a red handled Zip tool (very very hard to find in Canada?!?).

I just tried this on some vinyl siding and I used small white nails and they're virtually invisible unless you're looking for them. This is the solution I've wanted for some time so belated thanks for posting. No more flapping in the wind and no worries about no longer having the starter strip at the bottom (would normally but I removed the bottom course due to changing the height of our deck)

I have some vines growing under a back house's siding. The roots must be coming in along the perimeter bc there is a slab foundation. Is it okay to "pop off" the first couple of rows of siding so I can cut the vines? If not advisable I can dig along the perimeter as well.

there is a way to put the siding back on without having to drill through the other siding,all you need is a zip tool and a siding nail.instead of using a wonderbar to unzip siding use your zip tool to start at one corner pulling down on the siding,then use your siding nail and pry it from underneath from one corner to the other.when putting back on bend the piece of siding where the lip is a tiny bit so it will hook back under lip of other siding then use a chisel to push the siding back into place . when done like this most people would never know what piece of siding you took off.

Can somebody guide me on how to repair the very bottom edge of aluminum siding? There was too much dirt close to the foundation of the house. So, the very bottom edge that was covered by dirt became like paper crumbling by even slightest touch. I removed all the dirt and am looking for options on how to repair the aluminum siding. It’s only one piece. 4 inches wide 44 inches in length. Somebody told me that I do not need to replace it as it is fine just the very bottom is damaged. They said that there is some kind of metal edge trim or lip that can be put under the siding. Advice please!

Why no mention of the other of the "two" ways to get the old siding back on? Small brad nailing can get up under the upper row of siding so you don't have to nail. Should mention that any siding can be matched, you don't have to go, 'get a piece of white vinyl or sheet metal to replace bent original siding. This video was useful to me a trick to get old siding off and little else.

Thanks for the video. I have a detached garage with aluminum siding just like in the video. I want to put a couple windows in the garage. Can this be done without taking all the siding off the garage? Can a window hole be cut from the inside and then a angle grinder be used to cut the aluminum from the outside, leaving room for the window nail fins and then trimmed out over where the aluminum was cut around the window?
@notavailable3913
@notavailable3913 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's pretty much how to do it. I have installed windows with Hardy board and other siding. Usually I would cut a hole in the siding to attach the nail flange to the sheathing and then cut again to install 1x4 or 5/4 trim. You would also need to tuck in J channel to cover the cut edges of aluminum siding first. You probably won't be able to nail the J channel to the wall but you can go from the side and put a nail in the J channel into the side of the trim.

When reinstalling, cutting off the flange and then drilling/nailing through both pieces from the outside just doesn't seem right to me. Why not flex/bend the lower lip of the upper piece (that wasn't removed) and then carefully hook/push/bend the same lip back into place (after the removed piece is secured back into place using the flange that you didn't cut off)? I'm just a DIY'er but have had success doing it this way. Granted, it was only a few pieces. How does the nail through the siding pieces compensate for expansion and retraction? In Boston you can expect +100 degree swings. The manufactured flange in the siding has slotted holes to allow for this. Not necessarily criticizing, but maybe I'm not understanding something.

I haven't worked with this siding and experience is limited. I have worked with aluminum quite often and maybe bending the lip back causes these guys much more time. Also, I would think aluminum would swell less than vinyl? Just my thoughts seeing no one has put in any inputs, theyre great questions.

I hate when people drill or nail through the siding. Especially the TV/Internet cable guys drill a giant hole in the wall instead of going through the crawl space. Anyways, your suggestion is showing the obvious, that the dude in the video doesn't care. You can see 11:18 how they made holes in sheathing, ripped up the house wrap and then put nails through the siding; that guarantees rot/mold/termites/ you name it.

You don't have to make your own zip tool to get the siding off. There is a tool called the "side swiper II". I think I got mine at home depot. Its got a nice rubber handle with a sturdy hook, and will save you LOTS of time, elbow grease, and risk of damaging the siding using just your hands. And no, I don't work for the company that makes them!

+Larry T Ron: Thanks for the lead. Regarding the blown in cellulite insulation, can anyone confirm something for me? I was told by an older contractor that the old houses with the plaster and lathe construction don't need blown in insulation because that balloon/plaster/lathe construction by itself provides about an R-12 insulation factor. Does this sound right?
@MrCaesar4444
@MrCaesar4444 8 жыл бұрын
+Larry T - That is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. Balloon framed houses hemorrhage energy and heat loss/heat gain. Insulating walls properly can help to eliminate a lot of stack effect/chimney effect in the outside walls and in between floors. Another key component to improving a home such as that is to go to town on air-sealing in the attic and in the basement. Interior walls of a balloon framed home are a gateway to the attic and vice versa. Always, Always, Always air-seal first then properly insulate! I'm one that truly believes that there is something to be learned from every generation and every person, no matter how large or insignificant but feel free to remind those "older contractors" that we used to plow fields with horses.
