Removing an intake manifold for repairs on BMW 430i

Here I am getting ready to replace the oil filter housing on a BMW 430i as requested by a customer.
I got down to the housing and found it was not leaking as the customer was told by someone else, so now I am only replacing the hose and flange above the oil filter housing.

Hey great video! I have a question on the hose that you were pointing out there. Is it the engine block connector or the hose that runs from the engine block connector to the radiator?

The connection at the engine block, just above the oil filter housing is the source of the leak that I am fixing here. The hose that goes from there to the radiator is also being replaced.

so i believe ive gone on something of the same mission, the oil cooler was not leaking, but i have a solid drip/ leak running down that side of the engine block, more towards the back corner. im assuming pulling the intake, and introducing a pressure test, i should be able to find it under there? hoping its the same leak you had.

It could be. That is very hard to see because of all of the foam insulation on the engine. If you can look very close to the oil filter housing you will probably see a line of coolant or oil running down.

To change my oil filter housing, do I have to drain the oil and coolant before removing the intake manifold? Also whats the process for starting it back up after. Thanks!

You don’t have to, I would suggest at least draining the oil from the filter before and the oil pan after. The reason is that the oil filter housing contains the oil cooler, so once you remove it, coolant can get into the oil pan because of the way the seals are made on the housing. As for starting after, just make sure you refill it with oil and coolant.

Hi was your coolant leak only when the system was under pressure or even with engine off the coolant was leaking out ?

It needed to have pressure to leak.

I have a similar issue but without pressure, only refilling the expansion tank. I think that can be the oil filter housing.

It’s possible, you may need to remove the intake manifold to be able to see it.

you dont have to remove intake to fix oil filter housing.... but german cars r endless money pits..dont buy them..horrible

Not lying there at all I would say the b48 and b58 are probably close to one of the best newer engines out now as far as Mercedes they have tons and tons of problems Audis are decent depending on the model
