Great video - thank you. I'm sitting here with a full tank and 3/4 on the meter and I bet there are some hoses in mine that looked like yours! I don't smell any gas but I'm going to open this can of worms next, and your video will prove to be a huge time saver. Sorry Part 2 got eaten by your phone :(

Thanks Ken. Just about to pull mine out (tomorrow). Never a fun job and those filler screws usually rust solid. Worse, in the UK, the hole in the wing for the filler rusts even faster! Thanks for popping up on 80-90 from time to time - Covkid :D

Great video Ken! And you've got a great 'camera-man' there! Well done! :) I've been having gas leaks forever, whenever I fill up< but have been reluctant to try to drop the tank to get at the likely culprits on top of the tank (the rubber connector hoses on an '85 Westfallia). Could not find any detail on what the cross-over tube, hoses, & connectors were like. Now it looks doable. Can't wait for Part 2!

Great video! Can you share a link to part 2? - can't seem to find it. A question for an early model vanagon, '82 - should stay/replace with the stock 70mm that fits existing metal filler neck or swap (and source a plastic filler neck) to later model tank? I heard they are a small nightmare to install compared to later model. I also understand fuel outlet would be larger and likely a better fit for updated post (metal) fuel filter. I'm stuck on determining which is the best for performance and ease of install. Thanks for the feedback.
@VanAgain
@VanAgain 6 жыл бұрын
Part 2 got eaten by my phone after we recorded it, so there is no part 2 at this moment (in the future). If you have an air cooled Vanagon you could change to the plastic filler neck. However they are getting difficult to find right now and you can't buy them new. The last good used one I had, I sold for $125. The outlet is larger, so you just delete the fuel filter before the pump and install one after the pump. If you have a diesel you must stay with the metal filler neck as the diesel nozzle is larger than the gas so it won't work in a gas filler neck (all plastic ones). You can contact me through our website at www.vanagain.com if you have any further questions. We would love to help you. Ken

Brilliant video Ken, I've got a 1991 single cab pickup which I'm converting from petrol to diesel as there was no motor in it when I bought it, I've fitted the AAZ 1.9 TD motor with a 5 speed box, slowly but surely going through everything on the truck and I would imagine the tank will need changing. Just one question, will I need to keep the two breather tank's, the clear plastic tank's when I replace the new tank as I'm swapping from petrol to Derv?
@VanAgain
@VanAgain 4 жыл бұрын
I would say yes to keeping the plastic expansion tanks. Replace the metal tank and all seals and hoses though.

Hello, I was leaking gasoline on my VW T3. I have disassembled the tank and I found all the rubber gaskets damaged. Disassemble it and place the rubber gaskets, it is very easy. The problem is to connect all the tubes in the tank before putting it in place. Especially the one that goes from one side of the tank to the other. Can I place it as it was initially? Or can I place it under the pipes and cables that pass through that area.? On youtube I cannot find videos that explain the placement of the repaired or new tank. Can you help me find a video? I have work stopped. Thanks a lot. I write to you from Spain.

There is a metal hook on the frame above the coolant pipes. You need to thread the plastic cross over pipe above everything and hook it on the hook.
@jesusramonmenchacabenito4188
@jesusramonmenchacabenito4188 3 жыл бұрын
@@VanAgain Thanks for answering my question I know the hook. I will try to connect the plastic cross tube to the tank before placing it. I will need help from a colleague. I just won't be able to do it. One more question, do the tubes that are hooked on the top of the tank have to be resistant to gasoline? I do not think so.
@VanAgain
@VanAgain 3 жыл бұрын
@@jesusramonmenchacabenito4188 Yes they should be resistant to gasoline. The fumes from the gasoline will kill normal rubber.

Hey Ken, Just a thought on your Part 2 that got eaten. I had some pictures that I'd taken with my phone and could not find. Come to find out that Google in it's infinite wisdom, unbeknownst to me, had taken it off my camera and placed it in my account up on the cloud...Have you checked there? Or other possible culprits (iDrive, etc?)? I still haven't dropped my tank, other stuff keeps getting in the way... But hopefully in the next week or 2... Cheers, jt

Unless you put many coats of paint in that U shaped 'valley' in the top of the tank, you will be replacing the tank again in under 10 years due to corrosion pinholes and a strong smell of fuel and leaks when filling the tank. its basically a shit design which holds dirt and damp and rusts away again if you don't protect it.
@VanAgain
@VanAgain 6 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying. However the aftermarket tanks are actually pretty well treated. I have had them come here after 10 years and they are still in fine shape. I have never painted one of them and the vans I am seeing are from the North East and Canada.
