Little tip, when you use a punch to jar the pullstart ratched , replace one of the small screws back into it so that the threaded hold is not knocked out of shape. Good video, shame it wasn't around when I was on the learning curve as a young lad.

Thank you for the videos, you do very good work. I have a tip if you don't mind. When lubricating the starter ratchet automatic transmission fluid is a really good way to go. It last longer takes higher heat and doesn't attract as much dust. Please keep the videos coming.

Bruce , a lot of times with points & condenser it's the condenser that goes bad not the coil. There is also a part from Briggs and Stratton called a magnetron ignition that you put on your old coil and don't even have to mess with the points , just cut the wires and you don't have to buy a new coil or hunt up a spare one , unless of course it is bad . I've put hundreds on to save customers money and they start & run a lot better . Good video ! :-)

You don't actually need to remove the points and condenser. (I get that you had to let the water out of yours, so you already had it apart.) They can normally be left in there as they're nonfunctional anymore. It won't hurt to leave them in.

Dear Bruce, your Video is a really good help, because I was looking for a matching coil for long and I had worries about setting the points. Now I can remove the points an get a matching coil. But I still have a question about the wire. At 8:00 You say:"I hook up that little wire to that spring" But where is the other end of the wire? At my Motor one end is at that spring and the other end is at the capacitor. But you (and later I will do) cut the wire at the capacitor. So I have to connect this wire with the coil? Is there a connection point? Thanks a lot.
@BrucesShop
@BrucesShop 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that wire goes to the switch that turns off the motor. It just grounds out the signal that allows the spark to generate.

HEy Bruce Interesting! Thanks for the Video. I have a 1968 ish Toro with a briggs 7hp engine. It runs great when cold. But after a few laps around the yard it starts running really bad and will burn your eyes from the fumes. I put the carb in my ultrasonic but it was clean as a whistle anyhow I put it all back together with a carb kit.. A log splitter I have has the same carb so I swapped it just in case but nothing changed. The mower is a super low hour unit. It was maybe used for 4 years and then put in a garage and left. Some folks say it is the coil going bad and to do this conversion. This is how I found the video during a search for the ignition conversion. Any input Bruce?
@BrucesShop
@BrucesShop 5 жыл бұрын
Yes Can you check the compression? Then here may be sticky valves or a valve adjustment. On these flat heads that means taking off about 5 thousands of an in of the valves. This means removing the length of the valve and grinding a VERY small amount of material from the ends of the valve. Don't panic. Do a valve clearance check first. This video although a Tecumseh may help kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9WXgriTs6iRdo0.html Plus here is a chart on Briggs valve clearances. www4.briggsandstratton.com/miscpdfs/RNT/Engine%20Specifications%20Chart_ms3992.pdf Don't panic it is actually all very simple one step at a time. Before you start check all your gaskets for sealing. Lots of fun and lots to google. Enjoy the process.

I've become quite familiar with small engines in the last year or so working on small engines and watching your vids on you tube as well as others !! But I still have some problems trying to find the model ## on the machine. And trying to find the best /cheapest place to order/buy the parts. I would like to see a video on finding model#'S on different machines and talking about what parts could interchange with each other and to make sure u order the correct part. U have the model # for the machine and the engine!! Kinda confusing too me sometimes. Am I a lone wolf here or does other people have the same problem??? Thanks for all your hard work!! Very helpful - having this exact problem and with a 5hp rototiller as well. thank you. One question I have is - do you think that the points could have been filed and capacitor changed and it would have (or may have) run? Kind of a mute point since the electronic ignition seems so much more efficient, but in a pinch to make something like this run without the convenience of spare parts, it would be good to know.

Thanks for the reply Bruce. I am familiar with those modules and they are great on chainsaws as long as you can get air to them, they get very hot and burn up pretty easy, If you ever have to use one make sure to locate it so the flywheel is pulling air across it. People that have placed them under the flywheel say they burn up fast. Others have had issue if placed to close to a coil saying it interrupts it and causes it to miss fire, I don't know this to be true but it is coming from people that do a lot of modified chainsaws. I did find out that Tecumseh makes (or made) a 34443 coil that can be used to convert the older coils over to new electronic. An OEM is around $30 US and you can get knock offs for around half of that but after reading the reviews on the knock offs I think if I was going to replace mine I would just get the OEM and be done with it. I can't post a link but if you Amazon OEM tecumseh 34443 you can find it listed. My engine (H30) is purring like a kitten with it's points still in it and I don't know if I would bother with changing them out for what little I use an edger but wanted to know if I ever ran into something that I would use more.

@BrucesShop
@BrucesShop 5 жыл бұрын
Well. If you mean you want to have a battery start. The flywheel has to have gears on it. Then you find a starter that will fit that size of motor and also the housing (rewind) has to have access for the starter to engage the geared flywheel.

u took points out but left the push rod that pushes the points open it rides the crank shaft& when the crank pushes it out & vibration makes it come all the way out then u got oil from the motor block being pushed up & out under the points cover. they make a plug that u put in the puss rod hole.

@@BrucesShopthat's what i thought too. i did check the flywheel key to make sure and it was in the right spot. the engine hasnt run in years, so i put some gas into the spark plug hole and all i got was a slow fireball out the exaust. maybe i put too much in but i tried with some quick start into the intake and all that did was cause a fireball and sparks out the intake. didn't hear it fire once. i'm pretty lost at this point. note: my engine isn't the exact same as yours, in fact, i have no idea what year mine is cause i couldnt find anything from the serial

@@bmxscape I hate to say this but did you check the magnet on the flywheel or remove the cup and look at the flywheel key on the top of the crankshaft. I just sounds like the flywheel key is sheared. Is it at top dead center when the magnet is at the coil? If you are sure about the flywheel KEY not the flywheel you may have a internal timing issue.
@bmxscape

@@BrucesShop i did just have the head off and had a look at piston position compared to the flywheel and coil and that seems fine. i did however notice that the intake valve is not seating properly and is possibly bent, which also explains why i have little compression and fire coming out the intake. hopefully its just a matter of putting new valves.. any chance you've had experience with that?
