REMOVING roots that are sticking out of the ground

If you have these tree roots that are sticking up out of the ground, and you were wondering if you could just cut them off. Trees have a lot of roots, I’ve never had a problem removing a few of the top ones. If they’re in your way cut them off. If they’re not giving you any problems there’s certainly no harm in leaving them. It’s so frustrating when you’re trying to mow the grass and you keep hitting these big old roots. You’ll be happier your tree will be happier your lawnmower will be happier

Use a Sawzall with a wood cutting Diablo blade that comes in 8 and 12 inch. Cuts through like butter.

I bought the root hog, that thing is awesome, expensive but worth it. I did 50 roots in one day.

You should try to use a B'root Bar. Then you could work standing straight up.

Will it kill the tree if I shaved some of the roots and paint with the tree spray

I thought cutting the exposed roots will eventually kill the tree? That is what someone on my bermuda lawn forum mentioned.

it could, yes. its certainly not good for it. this advice is problematic because its not accurate and there are some other factors involved that an average person will not know when attempting this.

I just had an arborist come inspect all my trees today. One of my questions was if I could safely cut the surface roots on a few of my trees without killing them. There are a few that are in the middle of my yard and stick up far enough that it hits the lawn mower blades. For MY trees he said it was perfectly fine. These trees had enough large roots that cutting 2-3 surface roots wouldn’t put the tree in danger of dying. So I guess it depends on your tree, however from my conversation today leads me to believe that if a tree has surface roots large enough to be a problem in your lawn, then it also likely has a LOT of other large roots elsewhere and should be fine. Either way call up an arborist for a free consult. They will know better for your specific situation vs comments on the internet.

The root on my backyard is from my neighbors tree. If his tree gets messed up then oh well

yes but what about if the tree is my neighbors tree but the damn roots are in my yard? can I actually do something?

If theyre in your yard you can do whatever you like.

Those roots should be covered with mulch. That's how you can avoid mowing the roots. Removing those roots can kill the tree. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9qYdpWHtsfGZ4k.html

I just had an arborist do a consult on my yard today and he said go for it on cutting the surface roots in my trees that have this issue. Doing mulch to cover up problematic surface roots would often mean some seriously awkward landscaping. So yes it CAN kill the tree, but just call an arborist and they will often do a free consult and can give you specific advice for your tree in your yard in your region rather than blanket advice in comment sections or from KZfaq videos. My understanding it sure it’s not the best for trees to cut surface roots, but if a tree has big enough roots on the surface that they are a problem then it also likely has a ton of other large roots elsewhere and deeper, so you should be good to cut the few sticking up out of the ground.
