Coolant goes through the throttle body to heat it up because it cold freeze up and get stuck

Does it also help keep air intake temperatures cooler? Cooler air = better performance.

As Tevron said this is a throttle body heating. I highly recommend keeping this working. Even if you driving only in summer. Due to high air flows the temp can drop under zero degrees C and freeze the throttle. Keep going, I love your channel! Best regards Chris

I spent most of my spare time this entire winter completely rebuilding an hvac unit (to retro fit on my e30 convertible) after I saw your video on it. I even ended up combining it with the automatic temperature control unit. Installing it was pretty much straight forward but now it is taking me forever to fit all the parts in the engine bay as with every bolt I remove I discover more rust... I am very patient but you really are on another level :D I can imagine to do this full time though. Once I get in the flow it can be relaxing even when physically demanding.

Just to add to comments about the throttle body heating - as air flows through the narrow airway past the butterfly it speeds up therefore the air pressure drops resulting in water vapour condensing to liquid form which can freeze in the colder conditions of a West German winter (!) resulting in ‘carb ice’ (common in piston powered aircraft hence the carb heat lever which uses preheated air from around the exhaust manifold)

Saab did the same "coolant in the throttle body" thing for preheating the air going into the intake runners on a classic 900. I have no idea why, but you can delete them like on your BMW. Probably something common with Bosch systems. ALSO, I'd suggest purchasing a 3D printer for smaller, simple plastic bits. I've saved myself approximately half the cost of my Kobra 2 Pro printer so far for my Saab resto. You can even replace some flexible bits with TPU filament. I've also begun designing and printing my own replacement parts that are NLA from Saab with the aid of free CAD software available online (TinkerCad and Shapr3D)

The M42 has a throttle body heater too (two styles were used). It can be deleted and results in simplified coolant and air hoses. I did mine and the idle is way better. It's called "the mess under the intake" in M42 circles.

Good to see you back Steve. Maybe it's just me, but I'm definitely an amateur welder, having said that I've now done lots of it, and I still find sometimes it goes great and sometimes it doesn't. Same person, same welder and settings, same wire, same gas, same steel. If I had my time gain, I would definitely have paid extra for the RTech instead of the Sealey Supermig I own. In my experience, I get best results on car bodywork steel (0.8mm to 1.2mm) using 0.6mm wire and leaving a gap which is ideally the same as the wire, about 0.5mm. Although larger gaps can be accommodated, the welding job is always less tidy. If you want a good, invisible patch, it's always worth spending the extra time getting a perfect fit with nice even gaps. Talking of white spirit, I use loads of it, particularly for cleaning oily parts. The best price I found for it recently was Halfords, don't know whether it still is. Keep up the good work.

I'm using 0.6mm (down from 0.8mm for years) which is helping, I just need to make thoes gaps a little smaller like you say, and turn it up a bit and I think I'll see an imporvement. The R-Tech is a dream machine and is doing wonders for my average welding. Oh yes, £4.99 for 2L is cheap! I'll have to pop in a get some. Thanks again, Bob!

When it comes to things like those floorpan drain plugs, and the plastic screws that hold interior pieces on, you can get generic ones that are identical and about 1/10th the price, a lot of the time they're common/standard items rather than being manufacturer specific, especially the interior clips/screws.

The coolant going through the throttle body is typically for keeping the plate motor warm/dry in cold climates

You can do smartrepair for the dent in the glovebox. There are kits avaiable with wich you are able to copy the surface pattern from the dashboard and touch up with some airbrush sprayed paint.

The '90 Nissan 300zx I'm restoring also has the coolant going through the intake and throttle bodies. Quick answer its for emissions. Long answer, they wanted to get the motor up to temperature quickly so that its working as efficiently as possible, as quickly as possible. Definitely remove all that crap and plug off the lines, because its useless and prone to leaks. My throttle bodies had pressed in pipes and I used a press to remove them for a cleaner look. Since you are in a loony emissions country, probably just don't show or tell us you did it so you don't get in trouble!

Coolant is passed through the throttle body to prevent icing in very cold climates. If you do not experience temperatures below freezing in the place you park the car at night, you can delete this circuit. Typically you can loop the lines back into each other and cap the fittings on the throttle body.

I'd say go for it. You'll be terrible to begin with, but who isn't, and then the satisfaction once you can do it, is well worth the time spent to get there. And saving money is always good!

FYI if your going to use ceracoat for the exhaust 1-2 coats will not do it will take 5-6 for real long lasting protection.

Little tip. If you use a wire brush you will just polish the rust most of the time. Try scraping at it and you will see brown again. That is atleast my experience. Also what I found works best to remove paint and rust is a CSD disk. Pretty great for the edges after a cut so you don't thin out the metall where you will weld since it is plastic and not so abbrassive. cheers

Another great video! An idea for you for those pieces you can't reach and weld from the backside: don't fit the new piece on the exact contour. If you leave a space of around 0.5mm, it will allow the weld to penetrate deeper in. For the plastic dent, can you reach it from behind? If you do, try to heat and push to place.

Thanks, dude! That's a great idea. I'm just trying to think how I would keep it flush and ensure there is a 0.5mm away from the piece beneath it? I can't really get behind the dent, it's just more of the same material. It'll be interesting to see how that gets sorted, as I'm not 100% sure.

​@@RestoreIt Hi, not sure why you mentioned the metal beneath it. I meant you should make your new metal piece around 0.5mm smaller in perimeter to allow the weld to penetrate between old and new metal. This will give you better filling and not worry about places you can reach from the back side.

If you stopped doing little stitch welds you’d end up with a better result and less grinding. An inch or half inch of weld won’t overheat the panel enough to warp it out of all recognition. That being said I do enjoy your videos and this is no different

The hazard switch goes to far end towards the glove box, the rear window heater is rightly positioned, you are missing the rear window wiper switch, The Ac switch can be useful when you'll install the AC. evntually there was a switch for balancing the speakers volume to the right or left.

Thanks for this, dude! The car doesn't have aircon, but I think it did have the speaker switch, so I'll get that in. I've just remembered I borrowed a blanking plate from the 4 door as I no longer have the flashing red immobiliser receiver thing. I don't remember a rear window wiper button either. I'll have to see what I've got in the store room.

10:20 This is the problem I had with nearly all "project" cars I had. Dipping a car in Western Australia can be done but can more than double the cost of a resto. Also heath problems made it to hard for me to totally strip out a car and paying for it was just going to happen either.

How much does it cost to dip a car in Australia?! I know its about 2-4k in the UK depending on what you have done. Paying someone to do restore a car is eye wateringly expensive!

Thanks mate! He doesn't have the standard E30 fenders that you see in this video on the website yet. These ones are from stage 3 testing and are ready to go. The ones you are looking at are for the M3, which is worth A LOT more than a standard E30, 50k , 80k, 100k+

@RestoreIt. I think the water flows through to stop the throttle expanding under heat and stopping the tottle sticking partially open. P.s did you find out exactly what that loom was for in the back from behind the dash?

Coolant through the TB. is for winter time deicing, so throttle can not stick.

Haha, sorry, William. That's partly my fault. There are currently only two project. The E30 M tech 1 325i Sport And the E30 M tech 2 325i Touring. The E30 M3 is finished, but I still need to do one final episode on it when I'm next in Spain at the same time as the owner. The Red 316i touring had to go, as it was a bit of a filler project that I didnt really need and the Mercedes project came out of the blue. The Mercedes was completed.

Good stuff. I love white spirit and use it on everything, I’ve virtually washed in it before when covered in waxoyl. Be warned though it’s not very good for you apparently….

For rhe replacement sound deadening, I prefer Noico. Cheap, and they offer same thickness as OEM.

It's finding the files that the most difficult thing, for certain things at least. And then the print has to be perfect, and even if it is, will these 3D printed parts last as long as injection molded ones? I'm not sure.

Nothing to do with emission, it is just to warm throtle body during cold winter days, you can disconnect and link those 2 hoses together to stop the leaking, and no, there is no performanse gain in doing😊 so...

The cost of all the misc clips and special screws, trim pieces etc is a nightmare! Back when e30s where cheap a friend of mine dismantled a few e30s for parts selling some bits but mainly carefully hoarding away as many spares as possible for his own car. Including every clip, terminal, special bolt you could imagine. It's saved him a fortune over the last 15years or so.

I'm hoping to do the same but to a lesser extreme (I don't have the space) for my e39! Related to unobtainable clip and trim sourcing... thingiverse is full of useful 3d print models for older BMWs. We've printed a few bits to fix broken bits of trim on my e39 already some very helpful enthusiasts have spent a lot of time prototyping replacement parts!

How have those pieces held up, and did you print them in ABS or PLA? and did you do normal printing or SLA using liquid resin?

He's printed them in ASA (apparently similar to what wing mirror shells are normally moulded in), though it apparently stinks to print with some scary fumes. He's got a fume cupboard and extractor fan etc to deal with the dangers.... it's way too early to give a review on how the parts will hold up really, ask me in a year! I don't really know much if anything about plastics let alone 3D printing but thankful I have a mate with know how and a fairly fancy 3D printer.

That does sound like a fancy one. But yeah, we're already at a fume cabinet and a version of printing I've not heard of, haha. It's a great idea, but it's certainly not as simple as buying a printer and hitting print. I'll look into ASA now, cheers!

If I do not forget I schuld have few kg of screws from E34 530I i had, as I see lot of it look same. I use those mabe I can send U those garbage. But Im not sure how many is naw or was on some momenth part of my life in diferent cars, tools, bikes, toys, furnitures, jigs etc…

@@RestoreIt if send send all and forget. Lights from glove box, from thos roof handels insite (back one had lights then) even lamps from registration plate was in this box. Wooden/carpet floor panels from trunk are in my 3 th car naw (im timber framer, naw drive kangoo II.)

I can only think of 2 things why coolant needs to go thru that throttle body. 1. to help cool down the coolant by the air that flows thru it(seems unlikely) 2. Trapped hot air can rise and get to the throttle body which results in highte IAT and therefor less power
