Practical use of the machine is very informative and enjoyable to watch!

I'm clearing 20 acres now with a John Deere 110 tlb, it was completely old growth forested. With the little machine I have, I'm clearing 25 inch diameter Pine, Doug Fir, Tamarack, Western Hemlock stumps all day. A difficult stump with tap root takes around 35 minutes. An easy 10" stump takes around 10 minutes. On average with my machine, and 3 year old stumps, I can clear on average 6 stumps an hour. The machine you're running is over kill for what you're doing, and would make my situation seem like 'tall cotton'; I would think a challenge for that machine might be an old huge oak, or similar with a 5 foot base. As far as what I've got to do to preserve my machine, I dig a perimeter pit, digging, and dumping the bucket in place, just breaking up the soil, then slowly inch closer as the bigger roots free up, then snip as far under the trunk as I can to loosen the dirt, and clay. Sometimes the stumps are too big to pick up, and I'm guessing with clay, and rock stuck to the bottom weigh in around 3000 pounds; especially so when you knock the clay dirt mix off, and find a stone up closer to the bottom of the trunk that weighs in over 200 pounds. Every tree worth it's salt is usually anchored to large rocks, just saying.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but for digging stumps a skinny bucket for digging around the roots is your friend, they sever roots easier and don't disturb as much soil. Digging the roots on the three sides you're not pulling toward helps control the direction the stump goes by leaving the remaining system to act as a hinge. When the stump has rolled out they will either sever from tension or are easy to cut off.

Note to self, don't clear land without a thumb.

Don't rush yourself and be aware of EVERYTHING around you.... Best advice I can think of when operating equipment.

As you mentioned this excavator was well overpowered for the size stumps you were removing but if you had much larger stumps to remove or a smaller, compact excavator to use, my best tip is to try and break up the roots around the sides of the stump and then twist the stump out by pulling on one side of the root system. More of a prying motion with the bucket alone rather than digging with the whole arm. Not sure if that makes sense but I was able to remove a stump about the size of my machine's footprint, it was huge! Roughly a giant redwood would be compared to that machine you have.

Depending on height clearance you can drop the root system back into it's hole to release the dirt from it.

Tearing up tree stumps is satisfying. I hate removing tree stumps unless I have an excavator of course.

That first stump, I like how most casual viewers would spend ages removing a stump that size in their backyard, but the excavator just kind of accidentally rips it out on its second exploratory scoop.

I used to remove stumps out with a backhoe after popping the stump out I would scratch as much of the dirt from the roots as I could depending on the kind of tree it is.

A guy moving a stump once is what reminded me of this, a skid steer tip. When pushing a stump around with a skid as they’re hard to get in the bucket raise the loader arms and tip the bucket down and push the stump that way. I knew a guy who would push them with the bucket down on the ground. One time the stump rolled up over the bucket and shattered the door on a brand new skid steer. He came close to getting fired for that move.

I did a similar sized stump to the first one you showed with a 1.5t machine yesterday, took just a "little" longer, a chain saw blade (stone grown into roots) and a lot of axe swinging!

To save more of the root system, could a chainsaw be used by a second person to cut the roots lose from the stump before pulling it out?

Ive ripped out bigger Stumps at 100yrold. With a much smaller machine. Much smaller. However I love the vids.

If you plan to do this with a small machine a frost tooth is a must.

Why are people so critical? Yes that machine is overkill but does it really matter? I'd rather a bigger machine than smaller one. Also a lot of the comments are suggesting that you Leverage The Stump and go left side right side if the machine is big enough to just pull them out like you did so be it
