Keep in mind that Hi Ren and the trilogy are both Ren as storyteller/bard. You can get into his other music to encounter him as a rapper, singer, and so on. Some of his songs could play on the radio and fit right in. And you haven't seen him with his band, The Big Push, which has a feel of its own.

You called him a minstrel, and at the beginning of Violet’s tale you can actually watch him pause and put on his minstrel’s mask to steel himself for telling suck a dark story after he gets up from the hospital bed. He even mentioned somewhere that telling stories like this takes a toll on him as well. SUBSCRIBED!

As a writer, I can confirm that to tell a really powerful story, to tell a tale you want others to invest in, an artist has to invest themselves within it, first. You'll only get heavy engagement, if you give heavy engagement. You have to open yourself up if you expect to inspire others to do the same.

I grew up in a situation similar to Violet's, I've been in the center of violence and abuse. I never speak on it because no one knows how to respond to that, it makes people uncomfortable. I am forever grateful to Ren for making this song, for bringing it up, for giving a voice to the people who've spent their entire lives trying to find a way to cope all alone because nobody else will talk to them about it. We need more artists like Ren. I've watched several reactions to this trilogy, and one of the most consistent things I see across them is people hyper focusing on how skillfully the story is told so they don't have to address what's being said. I think those people are completely missing the point.

I'm so glad your hear to write that, that's all. I've had two violent partners. We survived girl, many don't. Some men experience the same, which is incredible but true. Abusive humans come in both genders and in all walks of life. I hate to say we are victims, but we are in a sense, of the students who participate in psychological warfare.

(Sorry this is a bit long, but you made a great point and I wanted to expand) ^^ I added this after I finished as a kind of heads up 😂 Yep, I feel like while Ren couldn’t give novel length backstories & character development, I’ve watched a lot of reactions & at the end most people share basically their “take away” was a very generalized “zoomed out” story, with an acceptance the characters were born into difficult circumstances… the backstories helped with how their circumstances were woven into how they saw the world… how they chose to live their lives were important not just for the plot, but because it reflected what they survived… For me, Ren clearly wanted to give enough info to have the listener care about the story in its totality, and to get them to care about each one, (even Screech) and maybe (hopefully) the listener could be able to resist assigning judgement or blame or fault &/or be critical of their stories & choices, instead maybe (hopefully) the listener would extend grace for being human, not perfect, and doing the best with what they had in those moments. There are so many VERY nuanced & complex topics living in the lyrics, like alcoholism, child SA, welfare use/“fraud” drug use, intimate partner SA, DV/IPV, sexwork, youth violent crime offenders, police involved ☠️… the list really can go on, because Ren was more courageous than a lot of people understand & planted those seeds to elicit desperately needed conversations, because like you, I too know how I wish I could openly discuss parts of the horrible things I survived as a way to help people understand how unhealthy and wrong the general public assumptions are, how the judgments inside those assumptions only serve to silence survivors and shame those experiencing it into not seeking help, and how survivors NEED a community but the silencing of almost all healthy conversation only perpetuates harm.

First off, thank you for being the first reactor I've seen that can explain the reverb going on during Violet's Tale. A lot of reactors pick up on and understand it's proof of the live performance, but otherwise have left the more intricate details out (probably because they don't understand them). Good, good stuff. Thank you. Secondly, I 100% understand and agree with that apprehension you expressed about venturing beyond "Hi Ren." I'm very much the same way, especially when it comes to splashy viral hits, right? Lots of musicians and artists can have that perfect storm moment where something incredible results. But when you explore their past music or whatever they release in the future, that same "it" factor isn't there. But I've not found that to be the case with Ren. No, not everything he's done is on the level of "Hi Ren" or the Jenny/Screech trilogy, or a handful of other standouts. But I will say that everything I've heard from him has maintained a sense of care and quality, whether it's his pure rap stuff or his pop/rock stuff or even his covers performed with The Big Push. My personal opinion is that he's just a fantastic songwriter with a wide range of tools and understands how to use those tools effectively.

Hooray, the first reactor to hear the opening section as a trumpet 👍 You are also spot on, in my opinion, in drawing comparison to the way Tom Waits paints vivid pictures in our minds with his story telling, making us feel like we are there, witnessing every scene. I am a huge Tom Waits fan and now. equally, a huge REN fan. You know your technical stuff too, regarding sound engineering and I can tell you appreciate this part of the artistry too ( the fella, Samuel, who films and directs these video's is also absolutely sensational at his craft - many folk overlook his contributions ) You are a fantastic fella. Your reaction at the end, when Ren hits us with the " punchline " was exactly as it should be from someone who totally realises the enormity of what they have just witnessed. Massively emotional story, told by a creative genius of the like I have never seen before. 🙏 ... Like an authentic connection between you and the artist. And all you want to do is pass that experience on to others. But often they don't 'see' it. Man. This comment really threw me down the rabbit hole. It really got me thinking. It started with one thing and spiraled out of control. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To continue that line of thought about use of sound and space. In the first half of Violet's Tale he walks to the end of the hallway to a corner and just stands there. To me it signifies a change of direction in her life just like how the hallway turns.. The way that the camera being so close signifying how trapped she feels up until the corner where the lyrics are about her new life away from her family. This being where the camera slowly distances itself. In the first half of Violet's Tale the camera is very close as he walks down the hallway at which point there is a turn in the hallway. The camera then moves away before Ren catches up. The close space can represent the feeling of being trapped in her situation, the hallway being her life which is bleak and empty. Which then changes direction when she finally moves out. Away and to freedom. Unfortunately it is taken away when she meets Stevie and the camera comes in close again. In the beginning the lyrics are about her horrible life at home. Then we reach the corner where it changes direction for a moment. At which point Stevie comes into the picture and we resume the tale. As we reach the stairwell we see we are at the bottom floor, possibly representing she was at rock bottom for most of her life. Ascending the stairs along with Stevie her life is changing, things are escalating. Then your point about the staircase is on point. Helpless with nowhere to go except to possibly heaven when it's all over. Then we reach the door. Oh my gosh! We reach the door! Throughout the whole Tale almost every door was closed. From the start of the tale there was only a single direction open to Violet. Aside from the momentary freedom at the corner, every other door was closed to her. When we reach the top of the first set of stairs there is finally an option. The option of ascending into the dark abyss, possibly to represent the darkness and unknown of death and ascending to heaven. Instead of ending her life herself, what does she do? She cowers in her room again unable to do anything. Up to this point there have been 3 doorways. The first was crossed on the opening of Violet's Tale. The second during the time where Stevie was charming her. The third with the line of history repeating which leads to the staircase and possibly thoughts of suicide. Each door representing some significance. Finally we reach the final door. Initially closed, it's opened by Stevie who is seemingly possessed by the Devil at this point. Through most of the song Violet hasn't been able to do anything, just moving forward. The one time she made a change and moved out, Stevie came into the picture. Trapped again at rock bottom, Stevie opens a door for her. Through the door we finally escape the cramped and empty apartment to outside. Unfortunately her escape is to a dark and dirty back alley still alone and still with Stevie. Finally we go forward in time where broken, Violet finally breaks her silence. Coincidentally this is also when we hit the main(?) street. Out of the alley with more space to breathe, Violet breathes her last in order for her children to breathe their first. The camera moves away and we see doors. Many, many doors. In fighting for those last steps forward outside of the alley, Violet has given her children a chance. All these opportunities and directions they can go. Unfortunately, as we all know, it was all an illusion. Just like Violet, they were not able to open any doors to escape. Trapped in the streets, the only directions being forward to the tales of Jenny and Screech. Or backwards to the tale of Violet.

Yes - Bardcore. Ren IS The Modern Bard, Minstrel, Troubadour and Town Crier. Script Writer, Master Lyricist, Production Manager, Guitarist, Singer, Narrator, Actor, Street-Poet, Rapper and Powerful Social Commentator and all round creative genius! Ridiculously talented. There MUST be Awards for this?! If not - they should be created. While Ren has been struggling to pay bills, although that IS changing now over the past few months, (remember he was selling CD's after performances out the back of a mates car not too long ago! and very recently he was having to crowd fund to pay for his ongoing specialist Lyme Disease treatment in Canada. ) Music professors and Drama and Film School lecturers etc. are bringing Ren's work into their Curriculum for their students to study! His 'Hi Ren' performance has reached over 20 million views. Just imagine if every view paid just $1 into his account. I sincerely hope the $ recompense is flowing into his coffers now... [ Hi again from Tassie! ] Keep up the good work. Your reactions are as insightful, informative and multi-layered as Ren's work and never apologise for becoming emotional. It's not just the subject matter, it's the precision and sheer beauty of his Art. I've watched this dozens of times and it always gets me - still.

Don't forget: silence is a reaction; sitting there in awe is a reaction. There are some artists that demand our full attention, be one a voyeur, KZfaq reactor, or anyone else. Sometimes, a simple glance at the lense, in solidarity with your viewers, speaks more than any words ever could.

It's funny, when you pull back and look at the scene from afar, it's a grown man alone in a room talking to himself and glancing emotionally at an inanimate lens. However, somehow in the moment it absolutely feels like in some weird asynchronous time line, I am actually speaking directly to each one of you. It's not an act, in the moment it doesn't feel performative. It's really weird. I think as people we are often so used to emotionally connecting with people in unusual ways now, that it can be quite a similar experience whether you are face to face, over the phone, or even completely disconnected by time via a video camera. I've never really thought much about it till you brought this up! 😃🤘

30:31 Right?! His gift is knowing just how to crack up open and deftly poke us in the heart with every tool he has at his disposal. Social commentary? Check. Superb storytelling? Check check. Acting that draws us in? Checkity check. Impeccably choreographed video production? Fucking kills this (along with the people he works with in making this happen) Musical talent? He’s clearly put in the hours. Vocal performance? Hell yes! He’s our version of Shakespeare as a minstrel. Can you just imagine hearing this fucking guy walk down your street performing? Chef’s kiss.

In his Live shows he goes into more detail... like Jenny being a street walker, getting stopped by the cop Richard! Also... Patrick doesn't answer because he's Busy with his girl... the one he calls, being told she's Busy! He catches them... flips out... kills Jenny, then gets himeslf killed! There's more... but I'll save that... as I see him making part 4... Richard's Tale!

“You think I don’t mean it, girl? You don’t know me!” That’s got to be one of the saddest lines in this whole production. If Screech only knew that they did know each other. They were in some ways the same because they both came from the same broken source. If only we would realize that we are all broken. And if you trace it back far enough we have all come from the same source. Let’s stop fighting.

Yeah, for me it's not just the emotional impact of the lyrics and subject matter that gets to me. In this trilogy, as with "Hi Ren", what also gets me choked up is just the sheer god-level talent this guy possesses. Don't know why, but that in itself kinda makes me tear up. Whenever a human being does something that seems almost impossible it just gets to me.

RIGHT!!!!! 😂 The sheer magnitude of the intensity of his delivery of multiple strong emotions is astounding, it steals ur breath, lifts u into soaring then crashing down again and u can’t turn away from it even though u will try! I think it’s the raw gritty nature of the life of a full time Busker that has made his stories so razor sharp! As a fellow Busker in Nola for almost 8 years it felt like he definitely knows where we live. Brilliantly crafted and executed 😢

Don't worry, Ren is no one-hit wonder. This song and "Hi Ren" are next-level for sure, but all of this guy's work is brilliant for different reasons. The line he pokes fun of in "Hi Ren" when he says, "she sells sea shells by the sea shore," was from a nursery rhyme most of us have heard. But he used it intelligently in his song "The Money Game Pt 2," another one worth a listen. Also recommend his duets "Chalk Outlines" and "How To Be Me." On a side note, the tale of Jenny, Screech, and Violet should have played at Sundance Film Festival.

Live Ren tracks that definitely won't let you down : _"Chalk outlines (live)"_ and "How to be me (live version)" ... Some essential context for _"How to be me"_ ... Rens friend killed himself one night, by jumping from a bridge. The track is recorded live, at night, on the bridge - and thus represents a deeply personal and moving tribute to coping with loss. As a showcase of his flexibility, try : _"Humble", "Sick boi", "Losing it", "Genesis", "What you want"_ I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by his sheer artistic breadth and production skills.

Brilliant reaction, breakdown and insight. Very few reactors have managed to even scrape the surface and articulate just how deeply profound this piece of multilayered art work is. “She tried to find strength to move but stayed as still as a statue in high heel shoes”. Jenny was a 14 year old wandering the streets of London late at night - a 14 year old wearing high heeled shoes? Just a little detail I caught of how she may have been earning a living which adds another layer to the dark side of life he paints in this.
