I cry buckets when I hear this song. But I cry over Hamilton's understanding of her pain. Of how he is brought to his knees and humbly stays by her side knowing that it's by her grace that he is even allowed to stand there. I am crying as I write this.

There are three moments related to Phillip's death in the show that always break me. 1. Eliza's scream of agony when Phillip actually dies. 2. When Alexander says "that would be enough" for the first time. Those are the exact words that Eliza used when she pled with him to put his family ahead of his ambition. In It's Quiet Uptown, it represents how Alexander, now at his lowest moment and having lost everything precious to him both personally and professionally, now more than anything in the world just wants to be by her side again. It shows how masterfully Lin uses those lyrical motifs to show character growth and change. 3. A grace too powerful to name . . . Forgiveness.

while all the “can you imagine?” and “the unimaginable” hurts every single time (cause like NO I CANT IMAGINE) the line that will always break me and always has is “the moments when you’re in so deep, it feels easier to just swim down”

Literally. All of them hit pretty hard for me (and I'm someone who's fiancee convinced me that we weren't ever going to be having children), but the "It's Quiet Uptown. Forgiveness......Can you imagine?" definitely hits the hardest for me, especially watching the movie and seeing Lin "break" (whether it's real or not, it's real af to me, lol). Just something about all the weight of the rest of the song, and what happened the rest of the show, just being materialized into the idea that Eliza was actually able to forgive Alexander. Something most of probably would never forgive someone for, but it really does take an extremely powerful person to go through all that and still choose to forgive her husband. And seeing/listening to that breaks me hard af. Lin is a literal freaking genius. Also proves that people can show sympathy towards someone losing a child, despite not having any. Something I can highly relate with.

Such a powerful and beautiful song - I sobbed the first time I heard it. As a parent, .I haven't been through this kind of loss, and pray that I never have to go through it. But...it's beautiful that Lin gave voice to this grief - "the unimaginable" grief of losing a child - through this song and this story.

What a great job Miss Goldsberry did with this great song. My favorite moment in this great musical. The theme of loss and finally finding the ability to forgive. Not blame, but forgive. Truly inspiring and moving, made even more poignant by Miss Goldsberry's incredibly thoughtful, emotional rendition. Wow. This song, this scene, a work of genius, well played by Miss Goldsberry, Lin Manuel Miranda and Philippa Soo. Forgiveness. We could all do with some of that. And more importantly, we can all do what is perhaps the most difficult thing to do. Truly forgive others. And all will be better for it.

There are moments that the words don't reach There is suffering too terrible to name You hold your child as tight as you can And push away the unimaginable The moments when you're in so deep It feels easier to just swim down The Hamiltons move uptown And learn to live with the unimaginable I spend hours in the garden I walk alone to the store And it's quiet uptown I never liked the quiet before I take the children to church on Sunday A sign of the cross at the door And I pray That never used to happen before Philip, you would like it uptown, it's quiet uptown You knock me out, I fall apart Look at where we are Look at where we started I know I don't deserve you, Eliza But hear me out That would be enough If I could spare his life If I could trade his life for mine He'd be standing here right now And you would smile, and that would be enough I don't pretend to know The challenges we're facing I know there's no replacing what we've lost And you need time But I'm not afraid I know who I married Just let me stay here by your side That would be enough If you see him in the street, walking by her side Talking by her side, have pity Eliza, do you like it uptown? It's quiet uptown Look around, look around, Eliza (They are trying to do the unimaginable) There are moments that the words don't reach There is a grace too powerful to name We push away what we can never understand We push away the unimaginable They are standing in the garden Alexander by Eliza's side She takes his hand It's quiet uptown
