I love how he is willing to break the mold. Then I got jealous, because he had 30-40 students to work with. With the recent lock downs going on and off, I am happy to have just 3 to 4...

My old school used to gather everyone around to show them a specific parry, then split them all up to spar the rest of the session, with the instructor mostly joining in the sparring with select students but occasionally walking down the line giving pointers

Wow. This kind of made me fall in love with sabre all over again. And it reminds of what Sydney sabre said about lessons in that the best way to get better was to have a team of a few fencers go all out to try and beat each other. You learn from each other and improve as each other improve. So you’re all incentivised to help each other. I’ve definitely seen it help my fencing.

I really love it when you post long form content like this! Came for the memes, stayed for the insightful videos.

Thanks for getting this translated. Beyond the physical exercises the mans insights into coaching pedagogy is cutting edge and a great example to aspire too. The man didn't even crack a smile when his Olympic champion student was fawning over him.

Thanks for making this! The subtitles alone must have been time consuming. This video has made me think a lot. The first thing I thought when watching this was, “How would this work financially because coaches make the most from individual lessons” but the explanation at the end does make sense. I’m glad that there are people out there like this - those who are willing to innovate and continue to do so even though everyone tells them to stop. It feels like that happens a lot in fencing in particular, so I feel a weird sense of happiness when it actually works out. I like the term ‘democratisation of fencing’. It does make sense, and maybe if the scales method is popularised, it would actually make fencing more popular too

I have been watching these videos for some years now. Thank you for translating them. The interview from 1987, I think, has perhaps the best examples of blade work you can find anywhere. There is a channel out there that has broken down all his scales and published videos on them from different angles but I think it's better if you go and watch the original version over and over until it sinks in. These guys have better blade work than anybody on the circuit today.

Well worth watching; wisdom like this doesn’t come quickly or easily. While I’m reasonably sure the feature that causes success depends on the quality of group instruction, the reality is an individual can only build upon what is already known. Groups, by definition, have a collective knowledge that will always be greater than the sum of the individuals in the group. To make use of that collective knowledge requires intense labor and masterful instruction. In my opinion, the real magic is when the individuals within a group are taught to self-direct and own their learning - from this, champions of life are born.

Two things: 1. The technique of all those sabreurs is just beautiful! 2. Whose using the Tarbes-Geuna method today? Would like to study it more.

Very interesting. Does anyone have an example of the "scales" the coach was talking about?

How does not fencing with a plastron make much of a difference? Also, I use those scales! Or at least the first one they showed

While I fully agree with this coaching philosophy, the part about history was inaccurate. Great video though! Just don't take the part where he talked about history to be true.
