He mentioned in one of his interviews that Masochist has mixed reviews because some people took it literally. He said that the song is about cutting attachments to everything because things can be gone in a second. He has a deep connection with this cause when he was sick and didn’t know how much longer he was gonna live for, he felt the fear of losing everything he loved and he wanted and it was mentally killing him. That’s why one of the lines is “Kill these metaphors I write to all attachments in this life” Love your reactions :)

This was one of the more controversial songs that Ren has released. Personally, I love and relate to this song a lot. Glad you enjoyed it as well. When Ren released this, he was expecting it to alienate a percentage of his fan base, which is truly masochistic. If you haven't reacted to Blind Eyed with Sam Tompkins yet, definitely check it out! There are several versions you need to watch. The official video, the MC sessions and the Angry Car Park Attendant version (my personal fave but I would watch the others first). Great reaction! I had a similar weird feeling about bopping excitedly to such dark lyrics. Suggestions for some excellent Ren stuff from about five years ago: Life Is Funny, Everybody Drops, Hold On, Heretic. Depression is powerful but, well, depressing, and quite short; it might work well paired with Ready For You, a more hopeful track (and one of my top 5 for Ren).

Some of my Ren feel-goods that you haven't heard yet: "Humble," "Ocean," "Hold On," "Ready for You."

I can really respect the feeling sometimes that it would be refreshing to have nothing and start from scratch. It’s a fleeting feeling but it can be a helpful exercise when things get overwhelming. I loved this from the first time I heard it… but I’m also not religious. And the hook is 🔥🔥🔥

To me the song is talking about what people do to each other and the planet. Someone is always killing something.

There are so many ways to hear this song; but any way you hear it; it's a HIT, literally. It's a great workout song and once again another infectious hook.

He did talk about this song and how he knew it would get some people riled up. But he’s saying he’s a masochist which means he wants to hurt himself not a sadist. I also believe that he wrote this when he was really really angry about being sick for so long. You know when you’ve just had it you’re like F everything. It’s not my favorite song from him just because I can’t listen to it with the kids in the car but I do think it’s a great song. And I think we can all relate to that feeling of anger and hopelessness.
