The Walter Isaacson biography of Leonardo da Vinci is superb. I read it last year and can unreservedly second what you said about it.

My favourite of the ninja turtle artists 🤣 Great recommendations. I have 'Brunelleschi's Dome' on my TBR pile and was thinking of getting 'Out of Italy' by Fernand Braudel.

Yay - I actually have one of these on my shelf. 😂 I purchased Walter Isaacson's Da Vinci a few weeks ago and of course, I haven't read it yet. 😬 April Blood, Galilieo's Daughter and The Borgias all sound really interesting, so I'm gonna add them to my _list._ 🤓 Thanks so much for sharing! 📚

Loved the video, Jenny. I lived in Italy for a year, and for a few months I was staying in a palazzo on the piazza that surrounds the Basilica di San Lorenzo, which is where the principal members of the Medici family are buried. Also, there's a TV show called "The Borgias" , starring Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia. If you can find it, you should definitely watch it. It's incredibly entertaining.

Ah, brilliant video Jennifer. The Renaissance is one of my (many) gaps. Basically most of my knowledge is based on two Fourth Doctor stories: The Masque of Mandragora and The City of Death. Ha! This is a great list of books to start filling those gaps in. I managed to pick up a 2nd hand copy of Painting and Experience in Renaissance Italy online. So that's great. I've got a copy of Vasari's 'The Lives of Artists' that I've not got around to reading yet.

Helpful list! Fortunately, my library has Renaissance People. I loved the other GJ Meyer book I read (World Undone), so will keep The Borgias in mind. Also the Isaacson book.

Very well said about Paul Strathern's Medici book. Such a weird unnecessary tone towards religion/sexuality. I will say that overall I enjoyed it as a introduction/overview of the Medici. Loved the video, great recommendations

it was a genuinely bizarre tone but you're right, def a good intro to the family.

I'll have to keep an eye out for some of these books. This is one of the time periods I'm intrigued by. It would be easier if some of these were at the library, but my library is small.

I'm partway through Isaacson's Leonardo da Vinci and loving it so far. Have you read The Florentines: From Dante to Galileo: The Transformation of Western Civilization by Paul Strathern? That one has been sitting on my TBR for a while...

I’ve read The Pope’s Ceiling and loved it. I also read Brunellechi’s Dome…(hope I spelled that correctly!). I really enjoyed it as well-and I’m not much good at understanding architecture either. I must admit I read them both just before going to Italy for the first time. (Sigh). Read the Dome. It’s pretty good. I’ve also read Galileo’s Daughter. I liked it. I’ve added books to my Renaissance reading list. Thank you.

often when his journals are published, the poetry is included with it but if I'm not mistaken, Oxford released an edition of his poetry not too long ago.
