Here's a video about the Renault 5 Turbo Superproducion with which Érik Comas won the 1987 French touring car racing championship.
Born in 1974 the proper touring car championship only started in 1976. The cars were run to Group 2 specification, and the championship was called the Championnat Français de Voiture de Tourisme. From 1982, Group A rules were adopted to replace the outgoing Group 2, but in 1983 the French Federation of Automobile Sport (FFSA) modified them to be loosely based on Group A, evolving into the 1987 and 1988 seasons, where Group B type machines, called "Superproduction," were allowed to run alongside Group A, dominating the series.
Renault developed their rear mid-engined hot hatch at the end of 1985 ahead of the 1986 season. The car kept it's 1.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which was able to produce around 370-380 hp. It managed to achieve some success in the hands of Jean-Louis Bousquet and Jean Ragnotti. Renault finished in second place in the constructors' standings. For 1987, three cars were built for Bousquet, Ragnotti and Comas. The Renault 5 was redesigned for more stability and also the engine gained more power. With a new camshaft and a new Garret T4/T3 turbocharger with tri-lobe shaft and titanium internals, the engine produced 410 hp at 7,000rpm using 3.2 bar of boost.
It was then replaced by the purposely built Renault 21 Turbo 4x4 in 1988.
