I had the same problem with my Clio 1.4 16V and I went to the service. One month later - same problem again. I found a solution on the internet and it works now... Try this step by step: 1. You just need to turn the key on position (dont start an engine), 2. Hold the lock button in the car (not on the key) until you hear the sound, 3. Then turn off the key but do not put it away from the lock, 4. Start the car. Hope so I will help everyone with this problem and sorry for my English. :)

What we discovered in our case was that immobiliser light doesn't flash but is turned on constantly, when blocked, and this is when car doesn't start. I does turn a few times though. So the 30 sec rule fixed the problem, but non starting again happened randomly. Finaly, we acknowledge the error...each time, that car was reverse parked, before switched off, it wouldn't start, so we needed the 30 30 30. If car was switched of while parking in forward motion, it starts normally every time.

It's quite simple - the immobilizer is not recognizing the key. Basically, you need a new key and get it reprogrammed.

I've just had this issue with a 1.2 clio try swapping or cleaning the earth strap from gearbox to body!due to it being "green" ie: corroded ,I replaced mine and fired up first " bingo"

follow Emir Totic's suggestion of the lock button on the dashboard. worked first time for me and i have had this intermitant immobiliser problem for a while now. The 30 second fix did not work for me at all and i tried that a few times. Nice one Emir.

I had this issue to with my 1.216v. Had order a new key eventually. The waiting game did. Not alwayswork on my car

resenting (30 second thing) worked for me ... at least for now , will see if it's a permanent fix or not ...... If I held it for too long .. like 1min it triggered the allarm, so kept it about 35 sec :) , thanks for advice

Are you saying yours was not starting with the Immobiliser light flashing constantly.?? or was you getting some other indication.

I have the same problem with my Clio sport and all I can say is this is my 2nd Clio and I will never buy one again shortest thing ever the amount I've spent on both on my clios I could have bought a bloody Audi.

mine does this to and the light will stay on solid too. had keys checked there fine, starter motor checked fine,the immobliser guy said he thought it was relays he put me one new one in and it started fine then next day did same and week later the new relay he put in has started to go green iv got it off and put bk in. just don't no what is wrong with it any help please?

I couldn't jump or bump my clio today because of the immobilizer - all that had to be done was with the ignition on remove the immobilizer fuse and refit. Open passenger front door, find fuse with a picture of a key. Unfortunately I had to learn that from the RAC.

Yeah works but then another problem is interferance with other peoples cars!for say if you have loads of cars in your area an yours is a mk2 1.6 v and your street also has anther 1.6 v but an mk3 model!that signal may interfer with yours I knw it sounds mad but it happens cause ive been told so when you get in your car it dont reconise your key cause of cross signals...take note..

The most common immobiliser fault with Renault Clio's is the key, it does not even need a battery in the remote key to start the car, usually the solder joints under the transponder aerial inside the remote key. Any good auto electrician can test your key and replace it, try these guys in Southampton: Auto Technix for Renault electrical problems.

@TheSpitfire91 OK you MUST be right then. My Clio MUST have been made by Honda or something because if it was THAT BAD, how come it never broke down? It always started immediately, all I had to replace were brake pads, discs, exhaust and as with any car the timing belt at about 60K . At 95k the water pump bearings started to rattle. I know the person who bought it off me, its now done 185K, he tells me it still hasn't broken down, he had to replace the TDC sensor as it started to go intermittent

The renault have a chip in their key and when the battery in the key wears out the immobilizer kicks in. Change the battery in the key to sort problem long term .

Terrible! Two weeks later finally renault have my ecu ready with a nice £300 charge + no cure for turning off the flashing light :| Atleast it starts though.

I've got a problem..Starting the car is so unpredictable..the warning light below the fuel can (which is next to the indicators).. I turn my ignition on..and that light will just keep flashing, and my car won't start..wether it's wet or sunny it'll regularly flash..proving me useless to drive anywhere It's been taken to renault, diagnostic checks etc are done and they found nothing, even stripped the wiring, and it STILL continues :( Any Ideas!!??

Hei guys, I've had the same problem with mine 1999 Renault Clio mk2 1.9l. At first I thought its all because of the key, but funny enough my auntie suggested to check the fuel filter, it may be worn. So I've checked it, turns out the actual filter was ORIGINAL! That mean it was not changed for 14 years. So I've changed it. It's been almost week without any problems, so I think that, maybe that would help you too..

I never had a Clio but if you turn the ignition off and back on again, hold down the central lock button on the key, turn the ignition back off and on again, the red circle light on the dashboard should be solid and go off again and you should start the car! Hope this helps!😊 it’s a common problem on Mk2 Clios and some people will either get the immobiliser kit to bypass the immobiliser but it’s not advisable, get the new key cut and get it programmed or even scrapping the car. Typical French cars……

hi ya!! i have the same problem with my renault master 2 and i found if i hold the button on the key as i turn it it works every time..try it nothing to lose..it does'nt fix the problem but it saves me turnin it on and of half a dozen times..

I had a Clio 1.6 16v for 9 years which never let me down in 95,000 miles, I then stupidly bought a Toyota Yaris which had NO END of problems, I traded it in for another Toyota which had even more problems, don't tell me Renaults are the shittest cars in the world, it is all down to maintenance and also the Renault dealers are not very good which doesn't help. Renaults are good to drive and if you keep them maintained they will keep going.

Buy a good car ??? . Clio is a good car !!! . is normal for cars with 6 to 10 years to develop faults This is not a fault , This is just a key which needs to be reset . Even if this was a fault which garage is more affordable , Mercedes ,BMW or Audi Garages ? , I would rather go to a Renault Garage as German Garages charge ridicules prices to fix simple things
