Talking for too long about a Renault Modus.
This is a 2011 Renault Grand Modus 1.5 DCI that has been featured in a few of the recent repair videos i have done. It was bought in January from a local auction with the intention of cleaning it and selling it on. However potential buyers were looking for evidence of a new cambelt so i took it off the market and gave the car some attention, being the 1.5 DCi the engine servicing and cambelt videos should apply to a wide range of cars.
Due to the recent lockdown i ended up with the car which has been a great lockdown runabout, my new 508 is nice inside and i would worry about messing up the interior with the sleuth of cleaning chemicals needed at the moment, the modus has ran for over a month on £60 of diesel.
I give my impressions of using and maintaining this modus in the 3 months that i have had it, i would definitely recommend one of these cars.

The best thing about Renault of this era is that they are completly rust proof. Thats something some premium car manufacturers still havent figuered out till this day.. My 2004 Modus with the k4m engine has just passed 200000 km and still runs great. Not a speck of rust. Great little thing.

I am a big fan of "crap" cars that are practical. The 1.5DCI is a great engine also, heard some horror stories about access in the modus but you have shown its not so bad. If I could find a cheap one I would be tempted but the Mrs would kill me for buying another ugly "old man" car..... Enjoyed the videos.

Haha there is minimal street cred with a car like this but it is incredibly practical. Show the Mrs the handbag storage facility in the passenger, seat sold immediately 😜 They are quite cheap, ive seen the 1.2 16v petrol ones go for £300, this particular model cost me £1550, after the work it was up to £1800.

I had the 1.4 modus as my first. Enjoyed it, got rid of it for a 1.6 Clio MK3 and shouldn't have. I prefer the modus only thing that went on it was a bulb. Changing the headlight bulb is easy but a pain with having to take bumper off. The Clio was newer but since it was the dynamique s the springs were constantly breaking on our UK roads same with other suspension components. Dephaser was knackered as well plus the belt snapped. Now I have a Hyundai getz 1.6 and so far only things replaced has been tyres and a battery. Great review.

Thanks for sharing, i would agree the modus is nicer to drive than the MK3 or MK2 clio, its the less dynamic (pardon the pun with the trim level) handling package but far more practical and comfortable car. Ive heard about them dephasers giving trouble, what did you do was it changed? I had a megane briefly with the 1.6 seemed a pleasant car to drive, really quiet but it was a bit gutless compared to a diesel and a bit too thirsty. The Getz is a great wee car, first car i bought and sold from the auctions was a 1.2 Getz, simple cars that feel a bit like a K11 micra to drive (the K11 is great fun), only downsides is the rust, the last one i bought from the auctions had me suprised at how thoroughly decent this £150 car felt on the road, put it on the lift and both rear sills and the subframe had huge rust holes. However the gearbox and steering rack sold and made back what had been paid for the car.

Thanks for the comment. I had a berlingo multispace after this modus and really liked it, although the modus had the edge when it came to low running costs £30 a year tax and it got at worst 44mpg on short trips, mid to high 60's on a run. With fuel priced as it is anything cheap to run has an appeal of its own.

Last year (2022) I bought a 2006 1.6V petrol Modus at 34,000miles...it a very cool and smart car to cruize around the town... It also feels very confident on the motorway in doing distances in a very fuel efficient way. It has a very good headroom and nice storage behind it. I'm not getting any other car for the next 3years

Thanks for this. Just bought a 2008 basic Diesel Grand Modus, 109k. all service stamps 12 months MOT. Although of very similar appearance to my 2008 low mileage 68k 5 door 1.3 Colt, it's an entirely different driving experience. The Colt is chain cam and very easy service access, but I'll get on ok with this Modus.

A well looked after diesel modus should give some practical and economical motoring. I sold this modus to a friend of my dads he likes it quite a lot. The only colt i have had experience of was a 1.5 petrol CZC (convertible). Generally the petrol japanese stuff is quite easy to work on and fairly reliable. The only mechanical thing that this one had was a stiff gear-change which was very easy to fix.

An excellent video, covering all essential points of the car. Perfect. I'm trying to decide between the Modus and Clio Mk3. The boot on the Clio puts me off, but then the central dash in the Modus also puts me off. 😂 I'm not quite sure really.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV I picked one up two days ago, 44k on the clock, seems like a good one. It has one issue though; when you give it the beans from first through third up to about 35/40 mph, the 'stop' light comes up and 'injector fault' message appears. When you ease off the accelerator, the message disappears. I've booked it in to my local garage for them to give it a little test drive and see what they think. I've found your videos most helpful, providing me with the knowledge to sort any problems myself. I'm going to do the fuel filter change soon. Thanks very much for doing these videos.

@@LukeNixsound Unfortunatley injection fault in a renault is as vague as a check engine light in any other car. It can mean many things. Its best to read the fault codes first which will give a better idea of what it says is wrong, then work from there. A garage will have good diagnostic equipment. Although an ELM 327 with the dash command app will also be able to read the engine fault codes to show what is wrong. If you do get the garage to do diagnostics on it, get screenshots of the exact messages the equipment says. It will make diagnosis easier.

@@LukeNixsound I have one of these www.ebay.co.uk/itm/294067077998 Its a handy wee glovebox diagnostic device, handy when going to view a second hand car. Now if your feeling a bit more flush there are renault clip diagnostic devices available on ebay. Although to be honest the software is a bit clunky and you need to have an old laptop spare to run it.

What a weird place for that speed limiter switch. My Dynamique model has it on the headlight angle panel to the right of the steering wheel under the main dash. Even my switch I have to really lean forward in the seat to touch it, it's too far away to safely use in motion. I've an automatic because of a back injury, but my winter gear/2nd take off button is on the left of my gearstick. That works fine in France, but I actually can't see the button from the driver seat. Some things just wren't well thought out when conversion was done. My 1.6 petrol auto does around 36-40mpg at 70mph, around 55-60mpg at around 60mph.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
Very strange they did that, there was plenty of space by the stalks or even on the steering wheel, if i had kept this car as a daily it would have been a mod to consider. I must say those fuel economy figures for a 1.6 automatic actually sound quite impressive.

5:50 : no grab hander because you can have a storage for sunglass. 8:00 : the speed limiter buton for the LHD is behind the steering wheel and turn signal switch, on dashboard left side, in blank position near light level adjustment.

Storage for sunglasses but i think the hole centres for that part or another grab handle would be the same? It would have been better than nothing. That is interesting, although it still seems a bit out of the road strange they didnt mount it within fingertip reach when holding the wheel.

Dci's are great engines, being 1.5 I'm guessing it doesn't have the dreaded Diesel Particulate Filter. However Renault has weak reliability record due mainly to electrical problems, but engine wise you can't go wrong with dci.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 4 жыл бұрын
It does have a diesel particulate filter DPF show at about 19:50 when i go under the car. Necessary these days to get the cars in line with emissions legislations a necessary evil but use the correct oil, clean fuel, keep it serviced and be aware that short journeys will clog it unless it is given opportunities to regenerate and it should be fine. The renault electrics thing, ive had french cars as long as i have been driving albeit mostly PSA, but have also encouraged friends/family to buy renaults with no big issues, at the end of the day the problems are generally just connectors and earthing points playing up. Ive never spent a large sum of money to fix anything electrical on a french car. Having actually bought my mum a honda jazz for the mythical japanese reliability i just believe it to be a myth. Worked on toyotas, nissans, hondas etc generally they rust a lot sooner than french cars are not immune to mechanical failures either.
