On my 172 ph1 I've had my cam belt snap and my exhaust fall off on separate occasions, thankfully not killing the car, I wasn't aware these were a common issue on the clio until seeing this video, but asides these issues(which can be prevented) the clio 172's and 182's are brilliant little cars, 15 year old car and it still stands it's ground nowadays :)

Expect rattles lots of rattles. Other than that it's a sweet ride. I had the fortune of finding one that had most of the mods I want done to it already. I'm having some of the lowering taken off though. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/uKgJBZdyLfb0_Ts3Hu1izbLyArZ2df1h6GHBh6M6PeOeXWsfW5CAil98Hszix1EGT8cT60-UMw_

Nice, informative, on board vid. I was surprised to see in the on board footage that the Clio had done 105,000 miles, as it appears quite tidy. It seems like your mate had a real bargain there!. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some of the personal attacks against you on here just aren't necessary. Keep the reviews coming, I say!. Cheers.

Great car. I have one and it goes very well, on road and track, even in fairly standard tune. Gearknob is simple to replace, steering wheel can be refurbished in leather for £100, gearstick gaiter is simple fix.

RandomReviews royalsteeringwheels.com/ I believe it is about £100 to retrim the 182 steering wheel, depending on what you go for of course. They do some top marques, but plenty of people with 172/182's have had theirs sorted out with these guys.

Had one of these for a few months now, only payed £1400 and not spent a penny on it yet. Agree with everything you've said, it really does have two personalities, potter to work or sling it around the back rounds...great stuff. Build quality is a bit dubious but its what you expect. Clutches are generally heavier on these anyway iso expect a slightly stiffer clutch pedal than your typical run about. Cliosport.net is a fantastic resource for these cars
@RandomReviews2014
@RandomReviews2014 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for helping out the community... I agree that the clutch is heavier than your modern hydraulic operated systems, but the clutches do become very stiff with age and wear on these Renaults from experience. Good, affordable, fun little cars! £1400 is a steal!

Literally spent £1000 on my new 182 and when I was driving out the garage the Aux belt tore apart and stopped the Cambelt in its tracks so not a happy bunny but at least I now have to spill my own blood on the car to actually make it mine lol. Great review and I had a chuckle when you said exactly what mine had just done :D
@RandomReviews2014

Hey Niall. Sorry to hear about the Aux belt failure, that really sucks. Hopefully the engine was at low RPM when the timing went out and the pistons are OK, unless you are replacing the engine?
@niallswinnerton6822

Yeah just reversing out of garage and heard the tap tap tap of a torn bit of Aux belt flying around and then engine stopped so the Cambelt has either slipped a notch or the Aux belt is wrapped round something it shouldn't only time will tell :)

Budget around £1,000 on top of the purchase price to sort the car out. Tyres, clutch, cam belt, aux belt, water pump, injectors, camshaft oil seals, lower arms, driveshafts, gearbox It’s going to need one or more of the above.
@RandomReviews2014
@RandomReviews2014 5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly why you need to inspect and test the car before you buy it. MOT should pull up lower arms and tyres. If it's got history of Cambelt & auxbelt with a clutch that feels half decent and not soaked in oil on the underside you're half way there. Injectors aren't exactly expensive, i'd be more concerned about the UCH!

I've been looking at a 55 182. The most blazing thing about it from a rational view is that it is in fact a 10-year old French hatchback. Now this doesn't mean it will definitely die on me within the first 100 miles. I have a 51 Clio 1.4 that continues to run smoothly to this day (thanks to being properly looked after). But I know my Clio has been looked after and I don't know if this 182 has. That on its own puts a barrier between me and buying it. The 182 in question is a little more expensive than most you'll find on the market. Does that mean it is in a much better condition? Perhaps. But it's still a risk. The problem is I really want a 182 but the longer I leave it, the older they become and the less chance I have of getting a decent one.

Make sure dephaser is changed! If the engine sounds like a diesel then dephaser cambelt water pump and aux belt get em changed expensive but worth it, should run like a knitting machine not an old tractor.

Nice one, I've got a 182 as a daily and it's been great. Their an absolute bargain at the moment. It's a nice balence of old skool hot hatch (I've also got a 205) and modern with all the useful toys like cruise control, climate control and comfortable seats. I also like that it has a nice, uncomplicated powertrain, all the more modern turbo hatches that I've owned have been a pain in the arse to maintain, aside from the belts on the Clio it's been brilliant. I think stuff like the rattles and crap trim/ steering wheel give an impression of unreliable/badly built when in reality the soft touch lined VW products I've owned have actaully been terrible. Perceived quality wins sometimes.

Thanks for sharing your thought's. They are simple in their design by today's standards and like you say, are much easier to maintain without the likes of a dual mass flywheel or turbo charger thrown into the mix.

Just sold mine with 138000 miles on the clock still drives perfectly but the electronics and interior were falling to bits, for example the handle for the passenger to hold onto fell off LOL , and the sunroof developed a massive leak on wet days id get soaked, it really sickens me that the French tease us Brits this way, they make a great fantastic drivers car that can be thrashed all day on a track but then let it down with poundland interiors LOL , one of the worst was the old Saxo VTS another fantastic fast car ruined by cheap plastic interiors

Good video but the clutch should be light thing is completely wrong. These are notorious for being heavy, it's a renaultsport trait.
@RandomReviews2014
@RandomReviews2014 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I guess this is open to interpretation 'quite light'. After replacing clutches on the Renault Sport Clio's, they do become much lighter, due to wear on the friction plates, the pressure plates seem to become very stiff to operate. The difference between an old clutch and new clutch is profound in my experience. Granted, these are not fluid operated clutches and are stiffer to operate than in most other cars.
